, Application filed December 29,1924; 'Serial No. 758,721.
To all whom it may concern: l
' Be it known -tl1atf .I, OTTO MiiLLER, a citizen of the German Republic, residing at Breslau, Germany, have invented certain new and useful In'iprovements in Gumming Apparatus, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to a gumming apparatus of the type in which the adhesive substance is spread on the .surface to be gummed by means of a distributor placedon the reservoir; The improvementaccording to the invention consists in arranging a valve in a flat tubular piece located in the closing cap and traversing the stopper which closes the orifice of the reservoir. This valve is suspended on one end of a spring the other end of which is attached to a piston guided in said tube and having lateral outlet holes near the point. i The improved gumming apparatus is shown by way of'example, on the accom- Fig. 1 shows the reservoir for the adhesive substance in elevation, the front endbeing shown in section.
Fig. 2 shows in section the reservoir and the distributing device. Fig. 3 shows in plan view the front end of the reservoir, the closing plate being re moved.
Fig. 4 shows in elevation a foot for the reservoir.
The reservoir 15 for the adhesive substance, which is preferably of cylindrical closed at the open front'end by a 12 of suitable material which has a A metal plate 14 tightly fitshape is stopper central bore.
ting in this central bore serves to prevent.
the outflow of adhesive substance The stopper 12 is covered by aclosing platelii of suitable material which has to be removed when the distributing device is to be in serted. p 7
Thedistributingdevice consists of a tube 1 closed at the inner endbut open at the front end. This tube 1 is fixed in a cap 11 closed at the front end and having an enlarged open rear part which tightly fits on the front end of the'reservoir 15. The plate which closes the front end of the cap 11 has a central hole. A hollow piston 4 having a flange at the rear end is located in tube 1 so that its front end projects from said tube. The flange of the piston fits tightly into the voir 15 is inserted the tube ljand fills the same.
rate 1' so um a is adapted to slide on the inner surface ofsaid tube with slight friction when a pressure is exerted upon the front end or point of the piston4. The bot' tom plate of tube 1 has a central hole A spiral spring '2 bearing with the rear end against the with the front end against the flange of piston 4 serves for maintaining the'piston in the normal advanced position. In the front end of the tubular pi'ston 4 a spiral spring '3 is-attached, on the rear end of which a valve 5 is fixed designed to close the hole 7 in the bottom plate of the tube 1 when the gumming apparatus is in the position for use. On the front end of the piston 4 a ring 9 is fixed which is designed to securely hold the rubber pad 10 which'has a large front surface.- The front end 6 of the tubular p ston has, somewhat behind its point, lateral holes lVhen the apparatus isnot in use the reserin ai'foot 16 (Fig. 4) so that the front endvof the'reservoir is pointed upward. The distributing device is not mounted on the reservoir, the front-up.-
per-end of which is covered by plate 13.
To use the gumming apparatus, the cover plate 13 hastobe removed and the cap 11 with the tube 1 and the other elements 1s mounted on the front or upper end of the" reservoir 15, the tube 1 which is inserted into the central bore of stopper 12 pushing out, the metal plate 14 so that the lower end of this bore is free. The reservoir, after having been taken out of the foot 16 is turned'upside down so that the adhesive substance flows from the reservoir 15 into surface the point of the piston 4 is placed and pressed upon the surface to be gummed.
The spring 3 presses then the valve 5 into the hole .7 solthat this hole is closed and the inflow of adhesive substance from the reservoir 15 isshut-ofi'. The'adhesive substance contained in tube- 1 flows out-throughlthe holes 8 to be spread by means of the rubber pad 10. As soon as the pressure ceases-the piston 4 is brought back to the initial position by the action of spring 3, the valve 5 goes out of hole 7 and the adhesive sub- To gum a 1 bottom plate of tube 1 and stance can again flow into the tube 1 from the reservoir 15.
I cla m A guminlng apparatus comprising in combination .a reservoir for the adhesive substance, a stopper closing said reservoir and having a central bore, and a distributing device mounted on said reservoir comprising 5 a cap fitting on the open end of said reser- 10 said reservoir, a tubular piston movably mounted on said tube so that it projects from the frontend of said cap and having outflow holes at its front end, a rubber pad on the front end of said piston for spreading on a surface to be gummed the adhesive substance which flows out from said piston, a spiral spring in said tube for maintaining said piston in the normal forward position, a second spiral spring attached at the front end to said piston, and a valve fixed on the rear end of said second mentioned spiral spring and designed to close the central hole in the bottom plate of said tube'when said piston isbeing pressed in.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature.
