Be it known that I, Lnsrnn THAYER, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Winthrop, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improve-- not exclusively to those for printing on cardboard sheets the impressions for a plu- 'ralit y of cartons.
In the manufacture of cartons having printed or lithographedexteriors, it is usual to print or lithograph a number of cartons at a time on sheets of greater size than can be handled by the machine. employed for cutting or stamping out and scoring the cartons, whlch necessitates the sheet bemg divided into smaller sheets before subjecting it to the operation of the cutting and scoring machine. the sheets-has either been done in separate machines or by means of auxiliary devices attached to the press, in either case thedividing into smaller sheets being done after the sheet is printed. Forfine classes of work it has been found thatboth of these methods fail to permit the cutting and scoring machine to cut and score the sheet in proper relation to the printed or lit-hographed matter, due to the inaccuracies in attachments-to the presses for dividing the sheet, and in cases where the divid- 'ing is done in a separate machine, due-to the expansionand contraction of the sheets when subjected'rto the atmosphere during the time between printing and presentationto the machine for dividing them. 7
According to myinvention the sheets are split into smaller sheets in the preses simultaneously with the printing or lithographing in suchmanner that 'anexact relation is preserved between 'the'edges of the portionsof the sheet so divided and thepri-nted I Heretofore the dividing of,
szzalsa and --lithographed matter. My invention mayalso be applied 'to presses which partially split the sheet as for example when a perforated "line is desired or the sheet" -is slotted to prepare it for an embossing press.-
My invention will be best understood from 1 the following description when read in light of the accompanying drawings of several specific embodiments of my invention selected for illustration, while the scope. of
my invention will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring particularlyto Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings, which illustrate the preferred form of my invention when applied to a flat bed press, I have indicated the bed 1- as mounted for reciprocation onthe track 3,
while above the bed I have shown the im-- pression cylinder- 5, which as will be understood by those skilled in the art is caused to rotate when the bed reciprocates. In Fig. 1 I have indicated the feeding mechanism for the sheets diagrannnatically at 7 and the delivery mechanism for the sheets diagrammatically at v9, the sheets'as is common in this type of machine being fed by-the impression cylinder :in the' direction of the arrow 11, whence it passes between the impression cylinder and bed and is finally delivered in the direction of the arrow 13 to the delivery mechanism 9. As will be understood, when the sheet passes between the bed and the impression cylinder the sheet is printed or lithographed.
Referring to Fig. 2 I have indicated the plates which apply the color or printed matter to the sheet at 15. said plates being supported on the usual blocks 17. On the bed I further mount the knife 19 supported by the blocks 17, which knife as is illustrated in Fig. 4: is in the form of a bar or narrow metal strip having the cutting edge 21. If desired however the knife may take the form of that hereinafter described in connection with the rotary press. Gooperating with the knife and serving as a platen therefor is the band 23, preferably constructed of a flexible strip of steel which encircles the impression cylinder. About that portion of the impression cylinder which faces the plates during the printing operation I provide the packing 25, the
band in a manner hereinafter explained being caused to have its outer surface substantially flush with the outer surface the packing.
For holding the band 23 in position the ends are bent over and if necessary secured to blocks 27, the band and the blocks being perforated to receive the oppositely screwthreaded ends of the turn-buckle 2.), the perforations 31 of the blocks being screwthreaded to receive the turn-buckle and the turnbuckle intermediate its ends being provided with the nut 33 whereby the turnbuckle may be operated.
For adjusting the band 23 radially of the impression cylinder to bring the outer surface of the band in the proper relation with the knife to compensate for wear of the cutting edge of the knife and to bring the outer surface of the band substantially llnsh with the outer surface of the packing inse'tshimsibi of paper orother suitable material between the impression cylinder and the band. the turn-buckle permitting the band to be loosened and adjusted for this purpos As will be understood the shims of paper provide a yielding backing which will cause the band 23 to be yieldingly supported against the action of the paper and knife.
In Figs. 1 and 2 I have indicated one knife and one band with a divided packing. portions of which are situated at opposite sides of the band. It will be understood. however. that I may employ any number of: knives and bands for splitting the sheet into as many parts as necessary.

In A 5 I have indicated the knil'e as carried by the plate cylinder 13 and the platen for the knife as carried by the impression cylinder In this form of my invention the knife, as illustrated by Fig. 6 is provided with a cutting ed 'e 48 and a base l9, which base supports the knife on the cylinder in such manner as to prevent it from tilting. Preferably. the band is of flexil le material in order that it may be made to readily conform to the cylinder and to be adjusted thereon when necessary.
The knife may be secured to the cylinder in any suitable manner. In Figs. (5 and T. the base of the knife is shown as provided with bevelled edges 51 which are engaged by the clips held to the eylimler by means of screws engaging nuts 57 having bevelled sides engaging the bevelled sides .35) o l' the slots ()1 formed in the cylinder. If desired, the knife may be held on the cylinder and particularly with those types of cylinders which are not provided with slots by means of screws, the base 1.) ol the knife for this purpose being provided with the countersunk screw holes 63.

The platen for the knife in the rotary press. as shown by Fig. i, is held on the impression cylinder and takes the form of the Zoo band 23 mounted in exactly the same manneras gdisclosed; in connect-ion with the flat bed press illustrated by; Figspl and 2.
Inrotary presses as well as in the fiat bed press Iaprefer tov mount. the knifeon the plate, carrying member. .It, however, is possible to-ireverse this arrangement and carry the knife on the impression cylinder, which reversed arrangement is particularly applicable to presses withprinting or color cylinders having a continuous plate of zinc, the surface ofv which is prepared forapplying print or color.
The forms of my invention exemplified by F-igsrl, 2- and Sale more specifically claimed in my copending applications Serial Nos. 652,335 and 652,336 filed July 18, 1923. It will be understood however that I am not limited to the illustrative forms of my invention herein described, but that wide deviations may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Claims 1. In a lithographing press, the combination with a rotary impression member for the sheet operated upon and a plate carrying member, of a knife for splitting the sheet transversely to the axis of said impression member simultaneously with the applying of print thereto, said knife being carried by one of said members for acting on the sheet intermediate the boundaries of the region thereof printed, and a platen for the knife adjustable toward or away from the cutting edge of said knife carried by the other of said members.
2. In a lithographing press, the combination with a rotary impression member for the sheet operated upon and a plate carrying member, of a knife set up among the plates on said plate carrying member with its cutting edge arranged for splitting the sheet transversely to the axis of said impression member intermediate the boundaries of the region of the sheet printed simultaneously with the applying of print thereto, a platen for the knife carried by said impression member, and means for adjusting said platen and knife toward or away from each other.
3. In a press, the combination with a rotary impression member for the sheet operated upon and a cooperating print applying member, of a knife carried by the print applying member for splitting the sheet s1- multaneously with the applying of print thereto, and a yieldingly supported platen for the knife carried by the impression member.
4. In a press, the combination with a rotary impression member for the sheet operated upon and a cooperating print applying member, of a knife carried by the print applying member for splitting the sheet intermediate the boundaries of the region thereof printed simultaneously,with the ap lying of print thereto, a radially adjustable platen for the knife .bent aboutsaidimpression member, and tension..means*for said platen.
5.111 a press having a rotary print ap plying cylinder anda cooperating rotary impression cylinder and means for splitting sheets fed between said cylinders in the direction of feed simultaneously with -.the printing thereof, said means'for splitting the sheets comprising a knife member onone cylinder and a cooperating platen: member on the other cylinder,anda packing on. one cylinder supporting one of said members.
6. In a press having a rotary print ap plying cylinder and a cooperating rotary impression cylinder, and a knife carried by one of said cylinders and a cooperating platen carried by the other of said cylinders intermediate their lengths for splitting sheets in the direction in which said sheets are fed simultaneously with the applying of print thereto, and a packing on the cylinder carrying said platen for supporting said platen.
7. In a lithographing press having a rotary print applying cylinder and a cooperatlng rotary impression cylinder, and a knife earned by said print applying cylinder and a cooperating platen carried by the impression cylinder intermediate their length for splitting sheets in the direction in which said sheets are fed simultaneously with the applying of print thereto, and a packing on said impression cylinder for supporting said platen.
-8. In a lithographing press having a rotary impression cylinder and a cooperating plate carrying cyllnder, a knife set up among said plates, a band serving as a platen for said knife, said band being bent about said impression cylinder, and tension means for said band.
9. In a lithographing press having a r0- tary impression cylinder and a cooperating plate carrying cylinder, a knife set up among said plates, a strip extending over the surface of said impression cylinder and serving as a platen for said knife, and means for adjusting said strip and knife relatively to each other radially of said impression cylinder.
10. In a lithographing press having a rotary plate cylinder provided with clip holding recesses, clips adjustably mounted in said recesses, and a knife carried by said cylinder and provided with portions for enga'gement with said clips.
11. In a lithographing press having a rotary plate cylinder provided with clip holding recesses, clips adjustably mounted in said recesses, and a knife carried by said cylinder and provided with a base having ble velled edges for engagement with said 0 ips.
12. In a lithographing press having a rotary plate cylinder provided with clip holding recesses, clips adjustably mounted in said recesses, and a flexible knife bent about said cylinder and provided with portions for engagement with said clips.
13. In a lithographing press having a rotary plate cylinder provided with clip holding recesses, clips adjustably mounted in said recesses, and a flexible knife bent about said cylinder and provided with a base having bevelled edges for engagement with said clips.
l l. In a press, a rotary impression cylinder and a cooperating plate carrying member, packing carried by said impression cylinder, a metal strip carried intermediate the length of said impression cylinder and hav ing its outer surface substantially flush with the outer surface of said packing, and a knife carried by said plate member and cooperating with said strip to split the sheets fed to said press simultaneously with the printing of said sheets.
