Description

1,579,062 J. M. BASS HOISTING DRUM March 30 1926 Filed August 10, 9
INVENTOR AITORNEY WITNESS:
Patented Mar. 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
JOHN BASS, or JOPLIN, virssonnr.
nois'r ive Daria.
Application filed August 10, 1925. Serial No. 49 ,369.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Join: M. Bass, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Joplin, in: the county of Jasper ai'id State of Missouri, hare'iiivented new and useful Im provements in Hoisting Druinsfof which the following is a specification.
Hypresent invention has reference-to a when the friction surface or face thereof has become worn will be effectively overcome. I g
A further object is the provision of a drum for this purpose in whicha friction cone, surface or face has an interengagement with the inner face of one of the hollow heads of the drum, and is provided with simple means for 'removably locking the said element on the said faceof the drum;
lVith the above broadly stated objects in view and others wiich will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference is to be had to the drawings, which accompany and form part 01 this application.
In the drawings V Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement. r I I Figure 2 is an end view thereof. 7
Figure 3 is a sectional view approXi-- mately 011 the line 3'3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an end view of the drum with the friction member removed.
Figure 5 is an inner face view of the fricy w inwardly projecting wedge-shmped, lugs 18 that are designed to be -receivecl in" the "wedge-shaped notclies'S. 'lherelis passed tion member.
Figure 6 15 an end viewof' the drum op" v posite that disclosed byFigure 2.
The hollow cylindrical body of the drum 7 is indicated by the nuine'al 1. One of the fixed heads thereof is in the nature of a winged flange 2 and is connected to the drum body by spokes 3. By reference to the drawings, it will be noted thatthe spokes project beyond the periphery of the body '1 so as to provide air openings between the clutch or friction surface. 7
of the drawings the clutch or friction surhead o has aiiannular depression 7 and is formed with inner notches 8 that communicate with ,the depression 7. From the hub 9 of the'dru'inhead'b there radiate lugs or en largenie'nts 10 that terminate with the inner walls of the respective notches 8. The side walls provided "by the notches 8 are disposed at outward angles with respect to each other, and the inner walls of these notchesare' formed with openings which align with'similar openings in the spokes of the head 2.
In the ordinary type of winding drums no provision is inade for the free circulation of air therethrough or for the circulation of air through the cable wound on the drum. Therefore, 'in addition to the spaces between the spokes 3,and the interior and ex .terior of the drum body 1, I provide the head 5, inward ofits flange 6, with open ings .11. In this manner it will benotedthat a free circulation of air is directedinto I the drum and to the exterior thereof so" that an overheating of the drum by the cable which is wound thereon, or from other causes will be to a great extent obviated. The air circulation is, of course, also directedionto the cable.
is integrally formed withthe head thereof, similar to the flanged head 5, as the frictional clutch surface is subjected to great strain and the same is liable to breakage and abroken clutchsurface renders the entire drum useless. Therefore, in carrying out my invention I provide a removable In the showing face or element is inthe nature of aclutch I Also withthi's class of. drums the friction element for the clutch ring 12. The ring 12 has on'its inner end through tlie lugs 13 and through the re- 'ferred to openings n the head 5 and the spokes of the drum the shanks of beaded rods 1i, and screwed on the outer ends of these rodsthei'e are 111K315. By such arrangement it will be noted that should injury be indicted to'a clutch ring 12 the same maybe easily removed and replaced-by an undamaged ring.
Thesimplicity and advantages of niyconstruction will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to-those skilled in the artto which such invention relates, when the foregoing accompanying drawings.
Having described the invention, I clai n 1. A drum of the class described coinprising a hollow body having heads on the ends thereof, one of said heads being flanged ontwardly, the second head coinprising a ring member, spokes connecting the ring member to the body and said spokes merging into a hub, the oiiter face of the second head having an annular depression, and Wedgeshaped notches communicating with the depression, a ring clutch member received in the annular depression and having Wedge lugs received in the notchesand means passing through the lugs, thesaid head and the spokes of the second head for removably securing the clutch ring on the drum.
2. A vinding drum having aholloW body,
heads formed on the ends thereof, one of said heads being apertured and provided with-a peripheral rinnsaid head having an annular depression onits outer face, Wedgenotches communicating with the depressions, lugs on the said face of the head inward of the notches, a friction ring received in the depressions and having Wedge Ines to be receivedin the notches, the second head being in the nature of a ring member which is disposed outwardly with respect to the body, spokes integrally formed with the. ring member and the body and merging into a hub and securing means passing through the lugs of the friction ring for the first mentioned head and the spokes of the last ll'lGlltlODQCl head for holding the friction ring, on the drum;
In testimony whereof aitix my signature.
orin BASS.
