Description

Patented Mar. 30, 19226.
UNITED sTA'rss i SYDNEY PAUL,
narsnrorsics.
OF LIMA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR To THE SUPERIOR MOTOR vCOACH BODY COMPANY, OF LIMA, OHIO, A CORPORATION OE` TERK ABSORBER.
To all whom it may concern 'Be it known that I, SYDNEY PAUL, a citizen ot the United States, residing in the city of Lima, county of Allen, State of Ohio,
have invented a new and useful Jerk Abpulls, as quick starts in the operation oit motor vehicles, whereby the transmission of suchjerks to a person seated- 1n the vehicle will beminimized.
This invention contemplates the use of chairs or the like in connection with commercial passenger-vehicles, such Jfor instance .as that'shown by mein vapplications Serial `No. 5932 and No. 5933, both filed January 3l, 1925, and now pending in the Patent Oiiice; and in Design PatentNo. 66,980, dated April 7 1925.
Other objects and particular advantages ot the invention will suggest themselves in the course of the following description, and that which is new will be correlated in the appended claim.
One manner of carrying outthe principles of my invention ina practical and efficient way is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l shows a pair of my devices in connection with the lower portion of a chair with which they are connected. Figure 2 is a perspective view of the casing alone of one of the devices. Figure 3 is a perspective view of the piston-rod and vhead alone. Figure 4 shows the spring alone. And Figure 5 is a vertical central section taken through one of the devices.
Similar indices denote like parts throughout the several views.
In order that the construction, the oper- I ation, and the advantages Vof my invention may be more fully understood andappreciated, I will now take up a. detailed descripj` and letters lE and denotel the feet of thev rear legs. LetterGr denotes the floor Aof the vehicle iny which inyvinvention is to be lin-V stalled, I
As the two devices required tor each chair are identical with each other I will describe but one andthe same parts of the otherwill be denoted bylike character, where shown. Each ot' the Jerk-absorberscomprises a casing` l having four sides anda top all in-v tegral with each other. .The lower end of the casing, which is'open,1is formed at an i angle with relation to the other parts, whereby when placed on a level surfacerit will stand at an inclination, asis shown in the drawings. vThe lower portions 'ot ing sides of the casing are cut-away forming a notch 2, as is clearly.indicated;v
Extending out horizontally :from the two of the 'adjoin-Q lower edges of the two sides whichare not l cut-awayis the ange, which is adapted to rest flat upon the floorGvwhere it is adapted to be secured bya plurality-o'fbolts 4, or otherwise. Y 'f lAt this point it should vbe understood that I two of the devices are to-be secured to the piston-rod, which is adapted to ltit slidably i in the tubular-guide 5,- extending therealoove and below. f
Numeral 7 denotes a packing gland lformed on the surface of the top of the easing, concentric vwith the aperture in the guide 5.
Said gland is to be packed withan absorb- I v i i ent material'iilled with lubricant, in order to lubricatethe rod 6 and the wall yof the in--7 the rod 6,'and itis adapted to be moved up and down in the casing between the floor G bwgivenaa jerltorward thatl the weight of and the lower end ot" the guide 5. The underfaoe of the head 8 1s formed concave or notched, as shown at 9 in Fig. 5, 1n order to `engage over the end of .the front leg C, or
D, ofthe chair.
Formed in yone edge of the head 8 1s a channel 11. A rib 12 is Jformed integral `with one side o'f-the inner-wall ofthe'eastact' with the under ei'de of the f. top I of' the Yeasing.'a-ndfthe:other endfin Contact with the top oit- '.the yhead :8., Y
An aperture 13 is formed through theup- *perf-portion' of the-'rod'ft-to receive 'thefpin 14. "Whenthede'viee islnot-in use, or when Litrls :desired to release the-feet Gentil), then therod're'n he drawn upward, 'against the fresili-ieneyfof theaspringlt), where itvmay he -seeul'eclvhy'-thefpin 14:l to-he inserted inthe `ieper-ture- 13.
. lt willfn'ew be eeen that l it twoo1*` they de- -vieeseloe-*securedl to a? Heer, asf in Fig. v- 1, with the eetflfand Dfplaeed therein, and the `v`heads 8 resting fon Said-feet, thezpin 14 heing removed, that if the vehicle carrying the floor-Gfand--sa1dehairfthat lfthe vehicle the person seatedV in the ohairwill cause the l fchairfto incline? toA tip backward, which'- will :naiseitheieet of the chair from thefloor, but "o'nfacoou'nt of the 'resiliency oft the Springs $10- thisfihaekward tipping-'of the chair will 1he'alesorloedfbyuthe-springs,.thatY is; permitting the chair to tip sufcientto afhsorhthe shock z rand-r then :thel Springs 5 will4 return the I desire thatfit befunderstood..that various changes maybe: made inv the .Several dey tail rherein eetl forth without fdepm'tingfrom the Spirit ofithe, inventionend without sacrificing 'aany ot the advantages. thereotl which are newv andfueeful. v e
Having :now` fully Shown and 'described 'my invention, whatlI claim .and desire to Seefure by Letters Patent vofthe United States, is-
A jerk, absorber` comprising a easing'havinga'top `andan open lower end with an laperturethrongh theeenter ofthe top, there fheing a notchformedinthe lower end portienlof the oaeing,.means for `securing the lower end of the casing to az'lioor, a tubular i guide extending.` from .theeenter of .theftop down Pinto .the interior of theeasingVa ,rod sl-idable in said;A guide.; 4and extending ltherel below fandr thro-ugh l'Sai-d, aperturev in. the top of the"easingx a head'. secured .to .the lower end o'ffsafid rod andl operative upftandfdown :infthe easing,- -andfa eeilfspring surrounding said guide and engaging't-he head.
