To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I IsAAo-E. Snxron, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVinchester, inthe county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have inventednew,
and useful Improvements in J acket-Securing Means for Jaoketed Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a sheet metal] shipping can and to a jacket therefor, the can including acylindrical body and a bottom offset inward fromthe lower-end of the body to form a recess. the jacket-includi11g a cylindrical body member covering and secured to the can body, anda discoidal bottom member covering and secured to'the can bottom and located within said recess, said jacket members being usually of wood. The object of the invention is to provide improved means for securing the bottom member of the jacket to the can bottom, and at the same time protect said bottom member. I I
Of the accompanying drawings forming apart of this specificationr I I Figure 1 is a side View of a jacketed can provided with jacket bottom-securing means embodying the invention, I
nieure 2 is an end view, on a larger scale, looking toward the bottom of the can, a portion being broken away. 7 v Figure 3 is a section on line 33 of igure 2.
Figure 4 is a section on Figure 2. V I v Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view, showing a portion ofthe can without the "jacket and securing means. f 1
Figure 6 shows in perspective, the crossed strips in which my invention is embodied.
line 4-4 of Fi 7 1 iew similar to Figure 4:, the
body member of the jacket being omitted.
The same reference characters indicate the sameparts in all of the figures. j
In the drawings, 12 designates the cvlindrical body. and 13Ithe bottom of a sheet metal shipping can of ordinary construction, The bottom is provided with a marginal flange 14 (Figure 5),.U-shaped inzcross section, forming an annular channel which receives the lowerend of the body 12 and is secured thereto in the usual or any suitable manner, the flange forming the lower end of the can. The outer portion of the flange forms an upwardly facing shoulder 15 (Figure 5) on the periphery of the body and and shown by igure 6 I 1e25.- Serial rm 42,457,
adjacent to the lower end. This shoulder is utilized as an element of means for confining in place the crossed securing strips herein-p after described.

The bottom member 18 is secured in place by two crossed sheet metal strips 19 and 2O.
The strip 19 is in contact with the bot-tom member entirely across'the latter, andis called the inner strip. The other or'outer V strip 20 contacts atlits entlportions w'iththe jacket bottom member 18, and extends across and contacts with the midlength portion of the inner strip 19. I
