It is customary to wet the stencil-cards before typing, since better results are obtained under such conditions. According tothe present invention, use is madeof a black. backing-strip 45, of suitable material for stencil typing, such as celluloid, the backingstripbeing secured .in position by retaining plates '46 and 47, secured, to the platen by nsvaeee screws 48, as shown in Figure 7. It has been found that, especially in connection with wet stencil-cards, the black celluloid enables the typing to be read more easily.

The automatic control of the feed-rolls21 is eifected by meansof a pin 62, projecting from the side of the handle 49, and an arm 63, fixed on the shaft 31 and provided with a slot 64 to receive the pin 62. The sides of "thefwslot 64 are substantially parallel throughout the greaterpart of their length, but, at the outer end of the. slot, the upper side of the slot is provided with, an out wardly-inclined portion 65, and the opp e site side of the slotis,providedwith a.1 1-'inclined portion 66, to facilitate'movement of the pin 62 into and out of the slot 64.

Further movement of the handle 49 in the same direction willserve to. advance the platen and card as indicated in Figure 5, the platen finally being checked by means of the pin 59 engaging the other end of the slot 60, as shown in Figure 6. The card 18 will then be in position for typing thereon by means of types 68 on type-bars 69.
After typing the first line on the stencil card, the platen may be line-spaced, as previously described, and, upon the completion of the typing on the card, the card may be grasped by the typist and drawn out of the machine, and the platen 11 may be restoredto its Figure 2 position. In the movement of the platen from its Figure 6 position to it's Figure 3 position, the pin 62 will be brought into the outer end otthe slot 64, and, upon shifting the handle 49 rearwardly to' its Figure 2 position, the feedrolls 21 will be cast off, It will be evident that, if the handle 49 be swung upwardly and rearwardly from its Figure 6 position,v it will engage the upper pin 58 and turn the platen to its Figure 2 position, the pin 62 entering the slot, 64, as the handle approaches its Figure 2 position and turning the shaft 31 to cast oflthe feed-rolls 21.
The stencil-cards are sometimes warped, so that the bottom edges bow outwardly from the platen and tend to catch on a type-bar-guide 70, mounted on a type-barsegment 71. To prevent such interference, provision is made of a wire card-guide 72,
looped over the type-bar-guide and sup-. ported by having its ends set into holes 1n the type-bar-s-egment 71. As shown in Figure 2,-the card-guide is flared outwardly above the type-bar-guide 70 so as to guide the lower edge of an inserted stencil-card back of the type-bar-guide. r Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and'portions of the improvements may be used without others.
