My invention relates to apparatus employed 'for dyeing goods or material in the mass; t-hat is to say, finished goods such as hosiery or the like, which may be loosely disposed in a drinn containing the dyeing or.
treating liquid. Apparatus of this type is particularly applicable 'for dyeing hosiery in bulk, although available for dyeing or otherwise treating other forms of material under similar conditions. n
@ne important object of my present invention is to provide an imperi'orate, rotating drum, the interior ot which comprises a continuous chamber, 'with oraminous .compartments or hollow partitions ext-ending longitudinally et' and projecting a short distance into the space of said chamber radially; certain ot said compartments lying adjacent to the outer imper'torate wall oi the drum casing, while other compartments lic adjacent to a central-shell or partition.
A iurther object ot my invention is to :provide means tor circulating the dyeing or treating liquid in two directions through the interior oif the chamber provided by the otatable drum.
A further object oit my invention is to provide means lor introducing steam into the chamber ot' the drum, and a still further object of my invention is to provide means whereby the drum and its contents may be rotated while the means through which the dyeing or treating liquid is introduced andv discharged and the means employed igor introducing a heating medium such as steam or any other fluid, remain at rest.

The arrangement indicated is more convenient. To insure a liquid seal between the contacting. surfaces ot the bell-mouth 2(`L and the Wall 29,y these surfaces may be annularly grooved as indicated at 33 and respectively; such grooves preferably registering and being adapted to receive any liquid which may seep between the surfaces, and such liquid collecting in such registering grooves will prevent passage ot the flowing liquid past the joint so formed.
The annular chambers formed by the walls 28 and 29 are merged into upper and lower passages 28 and 29, each having a cross partition 28b and 29?; which passages may be placed alternately in communication with passages and 36; the latter having a cross partition 36, communicating with both sides of a suitable pumping structure indicated at 37, which may be driven by any suitable means; a pulley 38, being'shovvn, receiving a belt 39 actuated by a suit-able prime mover (not shown). A pipe for delivering dyeing or treating liquid, or Water to the pump is shown at 40, and a tank 41 for containing any treating material may communicate with a conduit 36 between the passage 36 and the pump via a valved outlet 42.
The relation of the passages 28, 29 and 35 and 36 may be controlled by a gate valve 45 having a stem 46, passing through a suitably packed gland 47, and connected to an operating lever or handle 48 so that the liquid can be directed as desired; that is to say, such liquid can be delivered from the passage 35, to the passage 28, thence to the chamber 26 and channels 6, and discharged lirom the foraminous compartments 4 into the drinn chamber 5, and returned through the iforaminous compartments 4 and channels 6 to the cli-amber 25, passage 29 and `passage 36 to the pump, as indicated in Fig. 1, or discharged through the oraminous compartments 4 and return through the oraminous coii'ipartment 4 and the respective passages, without changing the direction ot the movement ot the pump. Provision is made ttor introducing any desired chemical iut-o the dyeing or treating liquid; the tank or receptacle loi such purpose being indicated at 41, and the pipe 40 supplying dyeing or treating liquid oi' water may be provided with a valve 402 l At the opposite end of the drinn, the end i plate l may be provided with a tniclrened hub 49 receiving a steam or fluid convey-V ing pipe 5l) with a suitable packed joint; a `gland 51 being provided for the purpose, and such end Wall may be bored to provide a series oli channels 52 and 53 for the passage o'lA steam or other fluid. The inner ends ot these channels communicate with the pipes 1 8 and 18 disposed within the chainbers 15 and 15L ot the-respective toraininous compartment elements 4 and 4, such pipes having a portion of their walls perforated throughout their length so that the steam or other fluid may be discharged therefrom and lFind `its way tl'irougli the oraininous partitions 16 and 16 into the chambers 14 and 14 ol' said ioraininous compartn'ients to heat or otherwise atleetk the body of dyeing or treating liquid passing through the same, as hereinbefore described.
The hub member 49 may carry a cone 55, between Which and a second cone 56, carried by a support 57, anti-friction balls, 58 may be placed, to provide a suitable bearing. The shell at the opposite end of the drum providing the chambers 25 and'26, may also be provided with a cone 55, be tween which and an outer cone 56, carried by a support 57, anti-friction balls 58 may be disposed.
By providing the angularly disposed channels 6 or the shell forming the chambers 25 and 26 with a suitable pulley face, such as indicated at 66, in Fig. 1, the drum may be rotated by means of suitable belt from a driven element, or, in lieu ot the pulley Jace, such shell may carry a gear wheel 61, to be positively driven by a motor driven pinion, or :from any other suitable form ot prime mover, as shown in Fig. 2.
rlhe drinn may be provided with a drain valve 62, disposed near the marginal wall thereof, and the end wall 1, may carry one, or a series ot liquid gage glasses 6,3, in order that the height of the dyeing or treating liquid in the drum may be ascertained at any time.
llVhile I have shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, et
seq., oraininous compartments or hollowV partitions 4 and 4, disposed Within the drum vchamber and comprising apertured shells carried by or attached to the end plate 3 and extending longitudinally of the drinn chamber, it is possible to ii'iodiy-such construction without departing from my invention, and to employ a construction such as illustrated in Figs. S), and 10,-V in which a channel member A may be provided and arranged to receive a pipe 18b apertured for the discharge or' steai'ii or other tluid, .and in lieuo'li a chamber 14 or 14., liaving an apertured wall through which the dyeing or treating liquid passes, this wall may be made up oit a series ot longitudinal rods or bars 66 forming a slatted construction through which the liquid may be discharged into the drum chamber or from which it may be withdrawn, depending upon the direction oit movement ol' the same.
While l have shown and described an end plate 3 as carrying the toraininous compartments 4 and 4 on one side, and the channels 6 and 6, on the opposite side, andas integral parts ol said plate 3, it will be nnderstood, o't course, that these several members may be separately constructed .and properly secured to said end plate 3 in order that the proper conduits or passages for the liquid will be provided so that such vliquid may pass into two directions to and from the' drum chamber 5, without departing from my invention. It' desired, the endwall construe-V tion may include a casing in the form of a truncated cone, as indicated by dotted lines` Figs. l and 2, and this casing may be integral with or independent ot the several channels, as may be convenient or desirable.
lVhile I hare described my improved apparatus as being'speciallj/ designed for dyeing, preferably ttor dyeing material in bulk, it 'fill be understood that it may be employed ior various niaterials and for the purpose ot scouring and bleaching, and that in lieu ot introducing' dye liquor into the drum chamber receiving' the material operated upon, l may introduce gaseousl'iodies,
bleaching' tiuids, scouring liquids or the like, y
without departing' 'from my inif'ention.
I claim:
l. In apparatus for dyeing or otherwise treating librous material, the combination ot a. rotatable shell forming a liquid containing drum, a series ot ioraminous compartments projecting into said drum and extending longitudinally thereof out ot contact with each other; the inner space o'tl the drum chamber being` otherwise clear and permitting free movement ot the goods under treatment, and means t'or circulating treating liquid continuously through said compartments and drum chamber.
2. ln apparatus tor dyeing or otherwise treating'y librous material, the combination ol a rotatable shell forn'iing a liquid-containinzg` drum, a series ot torminous walled compartments extending` longitudinally ott said drum., each oit said compartments having a plurality ot chambers and said compartments being' disposed out oi contact with each other whereby the interior otl the drum is relatively clear, and means ior passing treating' fluid through the chambers of said con'lpartments 'tor del Nery into said drum.
3. ln apparatus ior dyeing` or otherwise treating tibrous material, the combination ot a rotatable drum, two sets ot foraminous compartments extending longitudinally ot said drum; one sct being disposed adjacent4 to the peripheral wall o'li the drum and the other set being' disposed adjacent to the ccntral portion ot the drum and the inner space ot the latter being' otherwise clear, and means Ator introducing' treating tiuid into said drum through one set ot said compartments and discharging it trom said drum through the other set oi" compartments.

10. 1n apparatus for dyeing` or otherwise treating fibrous material, the combination of an imperforate cylindrical shell forming a drum, a plate closing one end of said drum, two sets ot foraminous compartments carried on one side of said plate and projecting into the drum, two sets otfluid receiving` channels carried at the opposite side of said plate and communicating with said foraininous compartments, manifolds for said sets of channels, and means ior delivering liquid to one ot said sets of channels.
11. ln apparatus for dyeingor otherwise treating fibrous material, the combination ol an imperforate cylindrical shell forming a drum, means for rotating the same, 'a plate closing one end of said drum, two sets of foraminous compartments carried on one `Side of said plate and projecting into the drum; one set being disposed peripherally and the other set Centrally of said drum, two sets oil fluid receiving channels carried at the opposite side of said plate and communieating with said foraminous compartments, and means for delivering fluid to either set of channels. In apparatus for dyeing or otherwise treating fibrous material, the combination'of an imperforate cylindrical shell forming a drum, means for rotating theldrum, foraminous compartments extending longitudinally of said drum the inner space of the latterA being otherwise clear; channels communicating with said compartments, a trunnion having concentrically arranged passages in communication with said channels, means for pumping through certain of said channels in one direction and through other channels in another direction while the drum is rotating, and a valve for controlling the direction of fluid moving through the respective channel.

In apparatus for dyeing or otherwise treating fibrous material, the combination o'f an imperforate cylindrical shell forming a drum, means for rotating the drum, two sets of foraminous compartments extending longitudinally of said drum the inner space of the latter being otherwise clear; two sets ott channels communicating with the respective sets of compartments, a trunnion having conceutrically arranged passages in communication with said channels, and means for introducing fluid into said drum through vone set el" said channels.

In apparatus for dyeing or otherwise treating fibrous material1 the combination of an impertorate cylindrical shell :forming a drain; said drain having an opening, a @over hinged to said drum and Closing said opening, means :ferret/ating the drum, 'foraminous compartments extending longitudinally of said drum and each having a plurality ogt chambers the interior of: the drum being otherwise free for movement of the material and treating liquid within the same; channels conimunicating with one of the chambers of' said compartments, means for delivering fluid to said channels for passage through `one o the chambers of said col/npartments, pipes in the other chambers ot said compartments, and means for delivering a dilterent fluid body thereto for passage to the drum,

In apparatus for dyeing or otherwise treating' fibrous material, the combinationl of, an impertorate cylindrical shell, means for rotating the same, two sets of iioraminous compartments,extending longitudinally of said drum and disposed radially with respect to the same; one set being disposed adjacent to the peripheral wall 'of the drum and the other set being disposed adjacent to the central portion of the drum and the interior of the latter being otherwise `free for the reception and movement of the material within the same; cach of said foraminous compartments having a plurality of chambers, means for circulating treating liquid through one of the chambers of said oraminous compartments in both directions1 and means for introducing a fluid through the other chamber of vsaid compartments for passage to the drum chamber.
16. 1n apparatus for dyeing or otherwise treating librous material, the combination of a rotatable shell forming a liquid-containing drum, means for rotating'said drum, a series of foraminous compartments extending longitudinally of said drum out of Contact with each other; the inner space of the drum chamber being otherwise clear, and means for cireuluating treating Huid continuously through said compartments and drum chamber during rotative movement of the structure.

In apparatus for dyeing or otherwise treating fibrous material, the combination cfa rotatable shell forming a liquid-containing drum and adapted to receive material to be treated, means for rotating said drum, a plurality of sets of foraminous compartments extending longitudinally of said drum out ot Contact with each other; the inner space of the drum chamber being otherwise clear, and means for circulating treating fluid continuously tln'ough said. compartments and drum chamber during the rotative movement of the structure.
