Description

March i6 19265 c. E. OTTERMAN HOLDER Filed Dec. 20, 1924 Owl-mam,
Patented Mar. 16, 1926.
1 UNITED STATES enemas a. orrnmmn, or TOLEDO, IOWA.
norms.
Application filed December 20, 1924. Serial No. 757,260.
To all whom c't may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. OITER- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo in the county of Tama and State of Iowa, have invented new anduseful Improvements in Holders, of which the following is a specification.
I This invention relates to improvements in holders and contemplates the provision of means which may readily and easily be applied to the instrument board of an automobile in order to clearly display at all times the required drivers license or registration card which are necessary to be present when driving an automobile.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a novel form of holder 'whereby a registration tag or license may be easily inserted therein and fully and clearly dis played and easily removed therefrom by merely removing one of the fasteningelements therefor.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a hinged top which is secured at either end of the instrument board and u on the removing of one of the fastening e ements the other at the opposite end will act as a pivot in order that the top ortion' may be swung upwardly in order t at the license plate or registration tag may be easily and quickly removed therefrom for presentment when necessary.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
. In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse section taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a similar view to Figure 1 and showing a hinged top therefor.
Fi re 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 of Figure 1 and showing the hinged connection of the top.
Figure 5 are detail perspectives of the top and upper edge of the holder respectively.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corpresent be conmaterial and as shown in the drawing is preferably formed oblong 'andincludes inwardly extendin flange members 11 which extend inwardly rom three sides thereof, the top side being open. It will thus be seen that the flange members 11 provide frame ends whereby a piece of celluloid 12,. isinglass,
glass orany other transparent material may be inserted therein and held thereto against accidental displacement in order that license cards and registration tags may be positioned between the body 10 of the holder and the transparent plate 12in order that the same may be fully displayed. The upper edges of the body 10 and transparent plate 12 are correspondingly notched as at 13, the purpose of which will be presently apparent.
In order to provide means for closing the holder and to continue a flange around the body 10 there is provided a channel shaped member 14 which has one end ivotally secured to the upper edge of the body 10 and the other end removably and suitably secured thereto, the pivoted end ort ion including a sleeve member 15 which extends through the channel shaped member 14 and one of the upper end edges of the body 10 and receives a screw 16 or other fastening elements in order that the same may be secured to a suitable portion of the instrument board of the vehicle and freely allow the channel shaped member 14 to be raised vertically at its opposite end portion in order that the license or permit and registration tag may be easily inserted between the transparent plate 12 and the body 10 or readily and easily removed. In Figure 2 of the drawing there is shown for purposes of illustration a card .17 which may be in the form of a license, permit, registration tag, identification tag or any other suitable tags or indic ia required by law for motorists for the operation of motor vehicles. The opposite end portion is apertured as at 18 and when the channel shaped member 14 receives the upper edges of the body 10 and transparent plate 12 it will be seen that the apertures 18 will register with the apertures 19 provided in the opposite end upper edge in order that a suitable fastening element 20 may be inserted therein and embedded in the instrument board. It will be noted that when the fastening element 20 is removed that the channel shaped member 14 may be swung to a fposition as clearly illustrated in Figure 3 o the drawing in order that the index finger and thumb of the driver may be inserted in the notch portion 13 of the transparent plate 12 and body 10 in order that the card or indicia 17 may be easily removed therefrom for. presentment.
The invention is susceptible of 'various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
A card holder of the character described comprising a relatively fiat elongated body, flange members extending inwardly in sgaced relation from the ends and bottom e ge thereof, a transparent plate positioned and adjacent the outer face of the body and having its corresponding edges received within the s aces thus defined between the bod fiange members respectively, a channe shaped member arranged upon the upper edge of the transparent plate and body, one
corner of the channel-shaped member and corresponding upper side edge of the body having a sleeve extending therethrough, and fastening elements extendin through the sleeve and the opposite end 0% the body and channel-shaped member for locking the transparent plate within the body and for securing the body as a whole in a desired position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
CHARLES E. OTTERMAN.
