Be it known that I, Kns'rnn M. HEARN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Vorth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pens, of which the following is a specification. V v

This invention relates to pens and especially to that type of pen known as ruling or draftsmens pens and contemplates the provision of a barrel utilized as the handle and having a tube extending from the lower portion of the barrel and between the inner sides of the pen point for supplying these points with the ink contained in the barrel.

7 Another object of my invention is the provision of a needle valve extending within the top of the barrel and havinga rod extending therefrom and along the outer sides of the barrel and which in turn has pro vided upon its outer side a clamp or collar for receiving the lower. end of the needle valve rod therein.

A further object of my invention isthe provision of a rectangular shaped yoke which is arranged intermediate the length of the pen point and receives the same within its inner side walls and including a set screw therein and which is adapted to engage the outer sides of one of the pen points in order to move the ends thereof into selective contacting relation whereby broad and fine lines may be drawn. I

With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a barrel, which in configuration closely resembles the conventional form of' fountain pen barrel and which terminates at its lowe'r'end with an internally threaded portion 11. An upper reduced exteriorly threaded portion 12 provided upon the upper end of a plug or nipple 13 is threaded-within the lower threaded portion 11 of the barrel 10 while the lower portion of the nipple 13 is tapered and has provided in its lower end an interiorly threaded counter-sunk portion 14. The pen shank 15 includes a reduced exteriorly threaded plug 16 upon its upper end and which is threaded within the 'interiorly threaded counter-sunk bore 14 while a pair of companion pen blades 17 and 18 extend in spaced parallel relation from the lower side of the shank 15. A tube 19 extends through the nipple 13, the shank 15 and downwardly an appreciable distance between the innersides of the companion 2 ing, not shown, within the top of the barrel r 10. A spring 24 has its upper end secured to the needle valve rod 22 while its lower end is secured to the guide sleeve or loop 21 provided upon one side of. the clamp 20 in order that the needle valve point 23 will be held rigidly and in a closed position within the opening, not shown, within the top of the barrel 10 while a cross pin 25 is provided on the needle valve rod 22 below the guide sleeve 21 in order that the upward movement of this rod will be restricted when so moved or reciprocated by a knurled knob 26 pro vided upon the lower most end of the needle valve rod 22.

A rectangularyoke 27 receives the intermediate portions of the companion pen blades 17 and 18 respectively therein and which yoke includes a lug member 28 upon one side thereof and which is received within the correspondingly shaped opening, not shown, in the companion pen blades 17 while a set screw 29 extends through the diametrically opposite side of the yoke 27 and has its inner end engaging and receive-d within a depression 30 provided upon the outer side of the companion pen blade 18.

In the mode of operation of the present invention it is clearly apparent and manifest that after the barrel 10 has been refilled as in the process of filling the nonself filling-fountain pens as in the use of an eye dropper, and the said barrel 10 is then associated with the nipple 13 and the shank 15, that the needle valve 23 is then arranged within the opening provided in the top of the barrel 10 and the companion pen blades 17 and 18 are then adjusted according to the desires of the user when he is desirous of making broad or fine lines and it will be noted that this ink which is contained in the barrel 10 will find its way through the tube. 19 and between the said companion pen blades 17 and 18 respectively.

to have a greater flow of ink or subsequent flows, he has merely to push u awardly upon the knurled knob 26 provided, upon the lower end of the needle valve rod 22 against the tension of the spring 24. which will in turn release and unseat the needle valve 23 from the opening, not shown, in the top of the barrel 10 and allow suficient air to be admitted therein and to displace a quantity of the ink from the barrel 10, through the tube 19, and between the companion pen blades 17 and 18 respectively;

The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is:

1. A pen of the character described com.- prising a barrelhaving a clamp arranged at an appropriate point thereon and including a vertically disposed guide sleeve upon one side thereof, a needle valve ro-d received within the guide sleeve, a sprii-ig having its opposite ends secured to the needle valve rod and guide sleeve respectively, the upper end of the needle valve rod terminating in a needle point and extending within an opening provided in the top of the barrel, a knurled knob secured to the lower end of the needle valve rod forfacilitating the reciprocation thereof, a nipple secured to the lower end of the barrel, a shank secured to the lower end of the nipple and terminating in spaced parallel companion pen blades, a tube extending through the shank and nipple and establishing communication be tween the barrel and pen blades, a rectangular shaped yoke received on the intermediate portions of the pen blades and including a lug member upon one; side which is received, within an opening provided in one of the. blades while a set screw extends through the other and engagin the outer side of the companion pen blades whereby a relative adjustment of the lower ends of the pen blades is facilitated in the drawing ot' broad and fine lines.

A drawing pen comprising a barrel having a clamp arranged at an appropriate point thereon and including a vertically; disposed guide sleeve upon one side thereof, a needle valve rod mounted for rec-iprocatory movement within the guide sleeve and including a. knurled knob secured to its lower end while its upper end being substantially offset and received within an opening provided in the top of the barrel, a nipple secured to the lower end of the barrel and having a shank associated therewith terminating in spaced parallel companion pin blades, a tube extending through the nipple and shank and establishing communication between thebarrel and the blades. a. rectangular shaped yoke receiving the pen blades and including a lug member upon its inner side position, within an opening in one of the blades and a set screw having its shank threaded Within the opposite side of the yoke and engaging the adjacent pen blade whereby a relative adjustment of the lower ends of the pen blades is facilitated in the drawing of broad and finelines.v
