, c. HARDY BINDING POST Filed June 17 1925 INVENTOR ChorIes Harol g BY r ATTO NEYS I PatentedMar. 16, 1926 'i I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES HARDY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR '1'0 .AIMSGO PRODUCTS, INC, 01 NEW YORK, 1\To Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW,YORK.
BINDING ros'r.
Application filed June 17, 1925. Serial no. 37,652.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known'that I, Cmnnns HARDY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York city, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binding Posts, ofwhich the following is a specificatiom f This invention relates to binding osts, and more particularly to an improved inding post of the type in which the clampmg cap and the stem or post are so coordinated as to prevent the withdrawal or removal of the cap from the stem.
The principal objects of my present m1 vention comprehend the provision of a bind ing post having a non-removable clamping cap designed and constructed so that the cap is efficiently guided on the stem for secure clamping operation, the parts of the cap and stem being so coordinated as to maintain the coaxial relation between the same during use; and the provision of a binding post of this nature which may be manufactured at low cost and assembled with ease, and which may be made in a variety of forms.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the elements and their relation one tothe other, as hereinafter more particularly described and sought to be defined in the claims; reference being had to the accompanying drawings which show the preferred embo iments of my invention, and in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view with parts shown in section of the improved binding post embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same showing the parts in" relatively detached relation, exemplifyin the manner of assembling the same, an e Fig 3 is a view of a modificat1on w th parts broken away to show the construction thereof. I
Referring now more in detail to the drawings and having reference first to Fig. I
thereof, the binding-post of my invention comprises a stem or post generally designated as S, and a clamping cap generally designated as C movable on the post in the performance of the clamping operation, the said stem S and cap C being coordinated to prevent removal or withdrawal of the I The stem S in the preferred construction comprises a threaded and for receiving a nut 10 aWhlCh, forms a; clamping member, the said stem further including a head [t on which the cap O is movable, the said head, It having a smooth-fated cylindrical body portion 11 and a cylindrical flanged top portion 12, both free from of the shank 8, thereby providing a shoulder 13 forming an abutment or stop for the clamping member 10.
The clamping cap C comprises a body member 14 having an enlarged cavity 15 open at the top and a reduced portion 16 having as smooth cylindrical interior wall which slidably mates with the cylindrical body portion 11 of the stem, the interior wall of the enlarged cavity 15 being preferably dimensioned to similarly mate with the outer wall of the flanged top portion 12 of the stem head. I
By providing a close or fitting engagement betweenthe body and flange portions of the stem head 71, and the interior walls of the cap C, it will be a parent that the clamping cap may be axial y moved on the stem head to and fromthe clamping member -10'witliout binding and with a close fit to secure an effective clamping operation. Moreover, by the provision of a head having a smooth cylindrical body portion such as 11 and a cap'havingthe interior cylindrical mating Wall 16, an elongated bearing for the stem head is provided, which permits the stem to remain always axially disposed relative to the cap, the close fit between these parts,
moreover, preventing any entanglement with any conductor clamp between the clamping members, The cylindrical body portion 11 is preferably provided with a conductor receivmg transverse orifice 17 located adjacent the clamping member 10.
For axially and rotatably moving the cap on the stem, the head hof. the stem is provided with an axially tapped. bore 18, and the cap G is provi e cap from the stem during unclampingLoperashank 8 adapted for threaded attachment to a suitable support 60 escribed more in detail hereinafter.
a with a headed 0 T screw member 19, the head of which is secured to the cap O, as will be described presentl and the screw portion 21 of which threade y mates with the axial tapped bore assembling operation of the parts, as will be clearly apparent from a consideration of Fig. 2 of the drawings. Referring to the figure, it will be seen that in the manufacturing of the parts, the body portion 14 1s 0 en at the top and provided with a marglnal upstanding flange portion 22 through which open top the stem S is inserted when the arts are assembled. After the stem S is inserted in the body ortion of the cap, the headed screw 19, which is preferably threaded into the head it of the stem prior to the insertion of the latter in the cap body, is secured in position by inwardly crimpin the mar inal flange portion 22 onto the head 20 of t e screw member 19 from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, fixedly clamping the headed screw to the cap body.
The binding post ma be ma e wholly of metal, or may be provi ed with a decorative unclamping position, the said ca head of insulating material, the former being shown in Fig. 1 and the latter in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The body portion 14 of the cap G is provided with a knurled outer wall section 23 which may form a finger grip for the binding post when made wholly of metal, or which may form a gripping surface for a molded insulation head 24 when a decorative head is desired. Preferably the head 20 of the screw member 19 is notched as at 25, this notch serving to receive part of the molded insulating com ound, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the rawings, whereby the headed screw member is more positively locked to the insulating head and to the body portion 14 of the cap C.
The manner of making, assembling and using the improved binding post of my invention and the many advantages thereof will in the main be fully apparent from the above detailed description thereof. It will be apparent that the parts may-be manufactured inexpensively, and may be readily assembled, producing a binding post in which the cap is non-removable when rotated to being smoothly rotatable on the head of t e stem, the cap being so guided 0n the head as to always maintain the coaxial relation between the stem and the cap. It will be furtherapparent that the construction is moreover such that all-metal binding posts with non-removable heads may be manufactured cheaply, the same being adapted for receiving decorative molded insulation coverings. It will be further seen that the mating threads on the stem head and cap are concealed and housed in a manner to prevent and mutilation of the same during use. It will be apparent that while I have shown my invention in the preferred forms, that changes and modifications may be made in the construction shown without departin from the spirit of the invention as define in the following claims.
