Be it known that I, Annual TEICHMANN, a citizen of the German Republic, residing at Zeitz, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relat ing to Safety Devices for Elevators, Conveyers, and like Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
p This invention relates to a safety device for protecting elevators or the like from fire or accident. The protective device for this purpose differs from known devices in that the conveyer band is provided with abutment members which, in the event ofthe band stopping, suddenly disengage a coupling mounted inside the pulley which car ries the band, so that only the shaft driven by the belt pulley continues to run. Further features of the invention comprise details rclating to the abutment members and the coupling. A still further characteristic of the invention resides in the abutment members and coupling being duplicated and spaced at equal distances from the middle wall of the band-pulley, with a view to increasing the certainty of operation.
Two embodiments of the invention are shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring to the drawings, the shaft 1 is jourualled as usual in the head of the elevator and is rotated by a belt or the like fronra pulley not shown. On the shaft 1 shown a sleeve 2 is held by screws and provided at both ends with flanges 3, on which sleeve the hub 4; of the pulley 5 may run freely. In order to mount the hub 4 on the, sleeve, the latter is split in the middle. The band-pulley 5, or so-oalled head-pulley in contra-distinction to the pulley (not shown) atthe foot of the elevator, has a central wall 6 into which are rigidlyinserted the several pins of the disengaging device.

over the pulleys at the top and bottom of the elevator and is provided with lugs 9 serving as abutment members and spaced at cer tain distances from one another, which lugs form the ends of a narrow plate 10 secured transversely to the band. With this arrangement the plate 10 may be located be tween a bucket 8 and the band 7 and be .rcrewed to these parts, as may be seen from Figs. 1 and 2. The abutment members may however be mounted on the band 7 independently of the buckets and have a form differing from that shown in the drawings so long as they fulfill the end in view.
In the flange 3 of the sleeve 2 is provided a groove 11 into which a tooth 12 of an L- lever pivoted on the pin 13 engages. The arm 14 is connected to a retracting spring 16 and the-arm 15 is located below a lever 17, the pivotal pin 18 of which, like the pin 13, is journalled in the wall 6 of the pulley, and the pin 19 at the other end ot which is pivoted to a thrust bar 20 which is pivoted to. the pin 21 of a tappet lever 23 turnable on the pin 22 likewise securely con nected to the pulley 5 or its hub 4t. 7 The band-pulley 5 is conveniently balanced by means of a mass 24. 'It is advantageous to duplicate the abutment members, L-levers and all appertaining elements and to arrange them at equal distances from the middle wall 6. v The ends of the lever 23 and lugs 9 are wedge-shaped. v
The operation of the device is as follows If during normal operation the band 7 and pulley 5 run at equal speeds the abutment members on the band and the tappet end of the lever 23 do not engage one another; even should the band t slip slightly, disengagement of the coupling, is not possible because should the band slip only slight-- ly on the pulley 5 the lever 23 will yield somewhat when it engages the lugs 9, but before disengagementof the coupling takes place the lug 9 will, if the slipping is slight enough, pass downwards out of engagement with the lever 23 which will then return to its normal position. On the other hand, the
"effect is different should the band remain stationary as theresult of a blockage in the elevator or for some other reason." In this case the abutment member 9 coming at the moment into consideration engages against the lever 23, so offering a positive resistance,
'and since the lever is dri en bygthe pulley iii) an L-lever and the arm 14; of-the latter moves the tooth 12 from the groove 11. In this way, the coupling is d scngaged; the pulley 5 is then freely mounted on the sleeve 2 and the shaft 1 alone continues to run. As is clear from the disengaged position shown by dotted lines, the lever 17 reaches a dead-point in its extreme position and consequently the re tracting spring 16 cannot return the tooth 12 which had. before been engaged in the groove 11 unless the mechanism described is retracted into its initial position (engaged position) by hand or in some other way.
Since the abutment members 9 embrace the opposite edges of the pulley the band is continually guided on the pulley by said members, whereby laterally slipping of the band and likewise the danger of tire resulting therefrom are avoided.
The embodiment shown in Figs. 3 and L differs from that first described mainly in that the L-lever 14: is simplified and by means of its tooth 12 engages in the groove 11 of the flange 3 of the sleeve 2 from above and not from below. Inthis modification said lever is provided with an elongated hole for receiving the pin 26 of the tappet lever 23* pivoted on the pin 22. In this way the thrust-member 20 of the first embodiment is dispensed with. That arm 17 of the lever 23 which serves as a link in this case takes up a dead-pointposition when the coupling is disengaged.
I claim 1. A safety device for elevators, conveyers and power transmission belting comprising in combination with a driving shaft, a band pulley loosely mounted on said shaft, a band guided over said pulley, abutment members on said band and projecting over the rim of said pulley, a coupling mounted inside said band pulley and connecting the hub of said pulley with said shaft, and means in said pulley projecting into the path of said abutn'i'ents and designed to be operated by 'said abutments when the baud stops to dis engage said coupling.
