UNITED armes WILLIAM M. DNCAN, OF ALTON, ILLINOIS.
FURNACE. i
Application filed Mayill, 1922, Serial No. 560,118. Renewed January 29, 1926.
To @ZZ whom it may concer-n: A
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. DUNCAN, citizen of the United States of America, a resident of lton, in the county .of'Madisoin State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces, of which the following' is a full, clear, ant exact description, referencebeing had to the accompanying' drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates generally to a furnace equipped with a mechanical stokerand other elements adapted to be associated therewith to provide for the combustion of anthracite coal on a traveling' grate, and particulary to a means for feeding said coal to said traveling grate.
Furnaces provided with mechanical stokers of the chain grate type are being' used quite extensively in connection with stills, and in the prior structures the coal receptacles were usually located at the front of the furnaces and at points beyond the end of the stills, the chain `grate traveling` under the coal receptacle and carrying the fuel toward the rear of the furnace. Itis not always convenient to so locate the chain grate with respect to the end of the still as to permit the front end of said chain crate to extend beyond said still end, and this has been necessary in the past due to the fact that an outer coal receptacle must be provided which discharges the coal directly onto the inwardly moving grate. The furnace disclosed herein diiers essentially from the prior structures referred to in thatthe chain grate moves in a direction from the rear of the furnace to the front thereof, and the coal receptaclewhich discharges coal onto the grate is within the lire box` and owing` to this difference the furnace may be located at any place under the still, regardless of the proximity of the still ends.
In the preferred Iform of the invention, the coal receptacle is located within the tire box at a point above the rear portion of the traveling chain grate, the grate passing under the coal receptacle at the rear of the furnace carries the fuel toward the front of said furnace, and aineans is provided whereby the coal is conducted from an outer coal receptacle to the coal receptacle Within the fire box, from which said coal is discharged onto the chain grate.
Another advantage in having the coal receptacle located within the fire box arises from the fact that the coal will be subjected directly to the heat of the lire box, and bc'- cause of this fact said coal will be placed in an incandescent state before itreaches the traveling chain grate, and it will, therefore, ignite immediately after leaving the receptacle.
y VViththe foregoing` view, the invention comprises the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specilically described and illustrated in the accompanyingl drawings wherein is shown the preferred enibodinient of the invention. However, it isto be 'understood that the invention comprehends changes, variations and modifications which come'within the scope of the claimhereunto appended.
Fig. I is a vertical section of a portion of mounted, and 2 designates the tracks located between said side walls. Side frames Band 4 are provided with wheels which rest upon the tracks 2. A drive shaft 5, inountedin the side frames at the front of thegrate, is provided with a series of sprocket wheels 6 which lie between the side frames 3 and 4l. An idle shaft 7 at the rear of the grate is provided with idle wheels 8. The wheels o and 8 constitute supporting elements for a fuel carrier in tlie form of a traveling grate made up of numerous grate members A arranged in endess rows. Each grate member A is provided with two transverse openings adjacent to its ends for the reception of two of the pivot rods 9. In the operation of the chain grate, the teeth on the sprocket wheels (i engage the pivot rods 9 between the grate members A whereby the grate is driven iny the i direction indicated by the arrows Vin F ig. I. i Y
Located within the fire box of the furnace is a coal receptacle lO (Fig. I), said coal receptacle being located immediately above the rear portion of the traveling grate. This receptacle is open at thetop to receive the and other objects in I coal, and open at the bottom to permit the discharge of said coal onto the grate. A second coal receptacle Il is located outside of the boiler B ina plane above the coal receptacle l0, and is' provided with a dis charge opening at the bottom thereof. The means for conducting the coal from the coal receptacle 11 to the coal receptacle l0 comprises an inclined tube 12 Which communi- Cates with the discharge opening in the coal receptacle 11 and passes through the boiler B in the manner illustrated in F ig. I ofthe drawings. The opposite ends of the inclined tube .l2 may be brazed to the end Wall and body Wall of the boiler so that there will be no danger ot' the contents of the boiler leaking therefrom at the points where said ytube passes through the boiler Walls. y The lower open end ot the coal-conchicting tube l2 is' located immediately vabove the coal recep tacle 10 Within the ire boX or' the furnace, so that when coal is placed in thecoal receptacle 11, said coal will pass through the tune l2 and be deposited in the coal' receptacle 10,`
from which said coal Will be'ieventually drawn by the traveling grate to be consumed in the usual manner thereon.
To provide a means for regulating the feeding of the coal to the coal receptacle 10 with I employ a rotary feeder F which is of ordinary construction.
I claim:
In a furnace provided With a boiler, a traveling grate Within the furnace fire box, a portion of said traveling grate being in vert-ical alinement with said boiler, a coal receptacle located in said lire box immediately above said grate, said coal receptacle having an open bottom permitting coal therein to be supported by the grate, a second coal receptacle outside of the furnace ireybox and at an end ot said boiler, the last mentioned coal receptacle being in a higher plane than the first mentioned receptacle, and acoal conducting member extended diagonally through the boiler, said coal `conducting member being in connnunication the second mentioned coal receptacle' and said. coal conductor terminating at the bottom or' the boiler and at a point immediately above the iirst mentioned coal recep; tacle whereby coal may pass from the second lmentioned coal receptacle through said coal conductor and be discharged into said first mentioned coal receptacle.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l hereunto a'f'rix my signature. y
WILLIAJH `M. DUNCAN.
