COMPACT-POWDER HOLDER.
Application filed April 26, 1923. Serial No. 634,662.
To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. LYON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compact Powder Holders; andI do hereby declarev the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of'the same, reference being had 10 to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference numerals marked thereon.
My present invention relates to toilet requisites and more particularly to containers or holders for face powder. Such powder is now largely sold in compressed cakes contained in suitable boxes and supported therein. in a metallic holder that prevents it from cracking or chipping and at the same time constitutes a refill for the box or vanity case when desired. The invention has for its object to provide an improved holder that may be cheaply produced and which will be light and serviceable though strong and sufficiently unyielding to protect the powder cake. To these and other ends the invention resides in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a central vertical section through a powder box containing a cake and illustrating one embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical section through the powder holder and cake;
Figure 3 is a bottom view of the powder holder and Figure 4 is a top view thereof before it is filled.
Similar reference numerals throughout the several views indicate the same parts.
Referring first to Figure 1, 1 indicates the body andv 2, the lid of common form of powder box having a cylindrical lining wall 3 over which the flanges of the lid engage. Within the box is a dome shaped powder cake 4: within a metallic holder indicated generally at 5.
and holder constructed in accordancewith' The liolderconsists of a shallow dish or rim 7 and as before stated this must be light in weight so that it. is stamped from thin sheet metal. The powder is compacted into the holder under pressure by suitable fillingmachinely in an effort to cause it tov cling so intimately to the surfaces of the holder that it will adhere thereto. ever, a difficulty, has been experienced in that the pressure exerted on the holder in filling tends to cause the side walls or flanges ing loosening and breakage probable if not inevitable. V
To overcome these .Cllfl'lCUltlQS I have detray embodying a bottom 6 and a flanged vised a very simple expedient which I find to be effective and which adds nothin to ing an annular groove 8 in the bottom 6 of the holder closely achacent to the flange or side wall 7 and which forms the corresponding annular rib on the'inside of the The effect of this is twofold: in.
holder. the first placethe crimping of the metal has the well known effect of hardening it so that it is less flexible and gives less tendency to the wall 7 to spread and in the second place it strengthens the bottom of the holder in the region where the relative movement of the flange and bottom is transmitted from one to the other.
I find inpractice that the provision described is most effective and the powder cake and holder are accurately fitted to each other during the molding operation.
I claim as my invention: 7
1. A tray or holder for compacted powder cakes embodying a sheet metal bottom having a surrounding shallow flange providing an upright side wall, the bottom being provided with an annular rib punched 8O the cost of production. It consists in punch r up from the under side thereof and closely adjacent and parallel to the base of said side Wall.
The combination with a tray or holder embodying a sheet metal bottom having a surrounding shallow flange providing an up right side well, said bottom being provided with an annular rib punched up from the under side thereof closely adjacent and parallel to the base of the side Wall, of a cake of compressed powder molded into said tray in intimate contact with all of the walls thereof.
JOHN S. LYON.
