Be it knownthat I, GEORGE G. GOING, citizen of the United States, and resident of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specication. Y
My invention relates to typewriting or like machines and particularly to type aetions' therefor.
The main object of the invention, generwhich the type actions' are controlled from the standard four-banli-lreyboard with a single case shift.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the features of construction, arrangements of parts .and combinations of devices set forth in the following description and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The present invention relates to a form of construction having certain of the same general characteristics and purposes in View as the constructions disclosed in my copending applications, Seral Nos. 665,290 and 3,365, filed respectively, Sept. 28, 1923 and Jan. 19, 1925. Both of said co-pending applications contain claims directed to features disclosedv therein, claims of the present application being restricted to features not disclosed in either of the other of said copending applications. t
As in the constructions disclosed in my co-pending applications, I provide in the present instance a machine having a standard keyboard of four banks of keys, each type bar carrying four types and being operated by either" one of two keys. Each pair of keys actuates a single front strike type bar in "a substantially noiseless manner to normally selectively print from one or another lower case type on the type bar, depending on which of two keys is actuated, or to selectively print from one or another upper case type on the' same type bar after a relative case shift has been edected between tlie platen and type bars. In the present embed ment of my invention the frame of the machine may be said to include a base 1- and so-called front plate or member 2 on which various working parts of the machine, including the type actions, are' supported. It will be understood that the type bars are arranged in a substantially horizontally disposed arc in front of and around the printing point as a center, so that each type bar moves but a short distance in a radial plane to the common printing center, as in the constructions disclosed in my said co-pending applications. The controlling means for each type bar, with the possible exception in some instances of the key levers therefor, move in the saine plane as the plane of movement of the associated type bar, or as close to and parallel with such plane as the assembled parts will permit.
With the foregoing general statement I will proceed to describe a single type action, it being understood that afll actions are alike, or substantially so, except that they are mounted in ldifferent planes that radiate from the printing center. The description of one type action applies to the others.
Each type action comprises a lflat substantially horizontally disposed type bar or type carrying member 3 provided with a pluralitj; of type heads or blocks 4 and 5 fixed t e reto. The type head 4 has a lower case type 6 and an upper case type 6, whereas the type head 5 has a lower case type 7 for printing a different character and an upper case type 7, the printing faces of the types on the two blocks being arranged in converging planes. Each type bar is guided against sidewise displacement in its printing movement by two oppositely disposed arc-shaped guides or guide combs a and a having radial slots in which the type bars move. Each type bar is supported by a pair of links 8 and 9 pivoted respectively at 10 and 11 to the type bar at different points in the length thereof. The links 8 and 9 are mounted to swing respectively on pivot pins 12 and 13 in the movement of the type bar from normal -to printing position.
1n the present construction the link 8 has a lateral bend 8a at its rear edge which supports an upwardly extending parallel arm 8b that corresponds substantially7 to the contour of the upper end portion of the body of the link. The type bar is received between the parallel arms of the link 8 thus formed, and is pivotallyconnected to both of them by the pivot pin In the present construction, as in the construction disclosed in my co-pending application, Sr. No. 3,365 the pivotal support 12 for each link 8 is adapted to be'shifted when one of the two keys which control the vtype action is actuated. But unlike the construction disclosed in said last mentioned co-pending application the pivotal support 13 of the other link 9 also isadapted to beindependently shifted when the other key which controls the type bar is actuated, all as will hereinafter appear. As in my prior application, Sr. No. 3,365, the pivot pin 12 is mounted on a controlling member 14 which"in the present instance is in the nature, of aball crank lever pivoted at 15 on a headed pivot pin secured to a normally stationary supporting member or arm 16. This supporting arm is adjustably secured on one side of a type action bracket or hanger 17 by which all associated parts of the type action, except the key levers, are mounted or supported.

ing an adjustment of the arm 16 to different .set posltlons on the hanger 17. The same 1s also true of other adjusting means to be hereinafter described. The adjusting means for the arm 16 shown in the present instance are of the following construction: The mem# ber 16 is pivoted at 18 on one side of the ferent adjusted positions around a screw 21,v received at its threaded end in a tappedl opening in the hanger 17 and provided with an angular or hexagonal head 22. By tightening the screw 21 it will clamp and hold the eccentric 19 firmly in the position to which it has been rotatively adjusted and thus hold the member 16 in the position to which it has been adjusted around its pivot 18 by the eccentric. This adjustment effects a corresponding adjustment of the pivot or fulcrum 15 of the supporting lever 14 around the center 18.
The pivot .13 of the link 9 also has means for adjusting it. Thus the pivot 13 is supported by a supporting member or lever 23 pivoted or fulcrumed at 24 to a normall stationary supporting arm or member 25. lXhis member 25 is pivoted at 267011 the opposite side of the hanger 17 from that on which the member 16 is supported, and has means similar to those previously described for adjusting the member 25 to different set positions on the hanger.` Thus, an eccentric 27 havin an angular or hexagonal head 28 is mounte on a screw 29threaded into a tapped opening in the hanger 17, said screw having an angular or hexagonal head 30. Said eccentric 27 is received in a substantially horizontally disposed slot 31 in the member 25 and coacts with said member to adjust it to different positions around the pivot 26. This adjustment effects an up and down adjustment of the pivot 24 and of the corresponding endof t e supporting lever 23, thereby elevating or lowering the pivot 13. lVhen the proper adjustment of the member 25 has been obtained it is held firmly in such position by tightening the screw 29.
It will be understood that the hexagonal heads 19a and 28 on the eccentrics 19 and l27 respectively are of suitable formation and conveniently located for co-operation-with a suitable tool or wrench by which the eccentrics may be individually adjusted, and that each eccentric is held friction tight in its adjusted position between the head of its supporting screw and a side face of the han er 17 4 T ese adjusting means for the links 8 and 9 aid in effecting a properalignment ofthe type bar to bring the types thereon into ali nnent with the printing point.

For lack of room in Figs. 1, 3 and other key of said type action (not shown) in the iirst bank. In moving a type -bar to printing position under the actuation of the key 32 the type 7 will follow a curved path indicated substantially by the dotted line b y if the parts have been properly adjusted. On the other hand, when the type bar is `moved under the-actuation of the key 33 the type 6 will follow a curved path of the general character indicated by the dotted line c. These curves are more nearly uniform, although they are oppositely disposed, than in my prior application, SnNo. 665,- 290, land it will be oerved that they converge in front of the` printing point and move in substantially a straight line coincident with the printing point at the last part of the printing stroke, and in this respect are unlike the construction of my application, Sr. No. 3,365. The means by which the paths of movement of a type bar are co ntrolled include in part features which have been described including the bell crank lever 14 by which thel pivotal center 12 of the supporting link 8 maybe shifted back and forth from the Fig. 1 to the Fig. 3 position.
I will nowdescribe in detail how each type bar is controlled from its two printing keys: It may be remarked at this point that the means by which the link 8 is shifted from the Fig. 1 to the Fig. 3 position .are somewhat like the corresponding parts disclosed in my said prior application, Sr. No. 3,365; The key 32 is carried by'al key lever 34 fulcrumed at 35 inthe base of the machine and provided with an individual returning spring 36. This spring is adjustably connected at one end to a depending arm 37 on said key lever, andis connected at its other end with abar 38 thatextends beneath all of the key levers and is adjustably lever when the clip is inthe eiiective full line position, and enables the link to be detached from the lever when the clip is in the dotted line position shown in Fig. 1.bv The upper end of the link 39 is pivotcd at 43 to an actuating member, sublever or lever arm 44 ivoted at 45 on the right-hand side of the racket 17. vThis lever is extended rear-l wardly beyond its pivot to form a second lever arm 46 which constitutes one member of a controlling togglaf 'lhe other memberof '1 this toggle is. a link 47 pivoted at 48 to the member 46 and at its lower end, as.y at 49, to one arm of the bell crank 'link-supporting lever 14. Themember 46 carries an upward-4j, `ly and rearwardly extending arm 46a the purpose of` which will be hereinafter described.

The arm 50 and lug. 5l act as stops to prevent' a downward break of the toggle beyond the substantially straight line, Fig. 1, position in the return movement of the toggle to normal position'. The eii'ectof maintaining the toggle vin the substantially straight line position is to hold'the pivot 12 quiescent in the position shown inFigs. 1 and 4 when the type bar is moved to printing position by theaetuation of the key 33, as will hereinafter more clearly appear. However, the depression of the key 32 results in moving the member 46 to the position shown in Fig. 3 where the member ^46 and the parts connectedtherewith, in-
cluding the key 32, will be limited .as will presently appear'. This de ression of the key 32 results in breaking t e toggle from the substantially straight lineholding position shown in Fig. 1, to the operated position indicated in Fig. 3, thereby lowering and moving forward the pivotal center 12 of the'type bar supporting link 8 to change the path of movement of the type bar as it is being moved to printing position by other devices` to be hereinafter described. The proper positioning 0f the pivot 12 in the' Fig. 3 position and the holding of it in such position by the toggle is effected before the final printing movement of the type bar takes place. Said sublever is arranged at the opposite side of the hanger 17 from the lever 44 and is mounted on anextension of the pivot 45. The lever arms 44 and 55 forward of the pivot 45 areparalle'l withy each other and 'are of like construction except that the arm 55 is provided with adepending lever arm 56. This arm 56 is pivoted at 57 to a link 58 which has its rearrend pivoted at 59 to alever 60. The lever or4 member 60 is pivoted at 61 on the left-hand side of the hanger 17 and extends upwardly and is received between the hanger 17 andthe for- -ward arm of the member 16, the latter being bent slightly at 16L (see Fig. 5) to provide-a lateral oit-setting ot' the forwardly projecting arm thereof, whereas the upper endet the lever 60 is also bent at 60"L to provide a slight off-setting of the upper end of said lever. The lever-60 constitutes one member of`a controlling toggle, the other member of which is` in the nature of a link l62 pivoted at'its upper end, as at 63, to
the torward end of the link supporting member or lever 23. The toggle members c' and 62 are pivotally united at 64 by a knuckle joint which includes a lateral projectien or stop of the member 62 which coacts with the corresponding .stop or projection 66. on the toggle member 60. -This last mentioned stop is bent sidewise to bring it into the path of movement of the stop These stops coact to lilnit the motion of the associated toggle members'- in their return movenient and prevent them from breaking beyond the normal substantially straightline position shown in Fig. 1. As long as the toggle members in question maintain this position the pivotal center 13 of the link 9 will beheld a ainst movement,
and as previously pointe out it is thus held quiescent during the operation of the type bar by the key 32, as indicated in Fig.,l 3. In order to e'ect an accurate arrest of the member 23 in its return movement to the normal Fig. 3'position, 1 provide a laterally projecting stop pin 67 on said mem'- ber 23, which pm underlies the arm 25 and coacts with the lower edge thereof when the toggle 60, v62 is moved to the substantially straight line position. The pin 67 also coacts with the arm 469L to bring about a restoration of both toggles 46, 47fand 60, 62 to their normal straight line position as will presently appear. 1
In the operation of the ft pe bar by the key 33 motion is transmitte from the sublever 55 through the' members 56 and 58 to break the toggle 60, 62, thereby lowering the link supporting lever 23 around its pivotl 24. The result of this is to lower and move rearward the supporting pivot 13 of link E), the ,parts of the linkage moving from the dotted to the full line positions in Fig. 4. This movement is arrested by an edge 60" of the toggle member 60 coacting in the nature of a stop with the stop surface 16" of the bracket 16, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 4. From an inspection this figure it will be seen that the stops GO" and 16" not only arrest and limit the breaking of the toggle 60, 62, but also limit the depression of the associated sublever 55 and the key 33 which controls it.' During this depression of the key 33 to break the toggle 60, 62 and shift the pivot 13 ot'. the link 9 as described, the toggles 46, 47 will remain quiescent in a straight line holding position, thus holding the pivot 12 of the link 8 against movement. The type bar will therefore. follow a path' indicated by the line in Fig. 1 to Kvrite from the corresponding lower case type 7 if the platen be in the 'lower case position, or from the appropriate upper case type 7a if the platen be in they upper case position.
It will be understood that after the breaking of either of the toggles 46, 47 or 60, 62 by an actuation of the associated key 32 or 33, it is intended that a release of the depressed key will enable the associated returning spring 36 to return the depressed key lever and return the broken toggle to its substantially straight line normal position, shown in Fig. 1. However, it may happen at times that either one of these toggles has not completely returned to its normal positionbefore an actuation of the type bar by the other key takes place. The construction hereinbefore described pro vides positively `acting means for automatically rectifying the position of or insuring the complete return of both toggles 46, 47 and C0, 62. This insures maintaining an accurate positioning of the pivotal center 12 during the actuation of the type bar by its key 33, as shown in Fig. 4. It also provides for maintaining an accurate positioning of the pivotal center 13 during an actuation of the type bar by itskey 32, as shown in Fig. 3. These results are obtained in the following manner z-From an inspection of Fig.
4 it will be seen that during the breaking imanes of the key 33, the member 462-46 will he forced to the limit of its return movement, or until the stops 50 and 51 coact, as indicated in Fig. 4. rl`his occurs before the type har reaches the printing position and insures a proper positioning of the pivotal center 12, and insures that a proper imprint of the type at the printing point will result.
Should the toggle members 60, 62 fail to he fully returned toy substantially straight line position after an actuation of the type liar by its key then the positions of such toggle members will be automatically rectified by the next actuation of the type bar by its key 32. Thus, at such actuation, lthe arm 46L is moved upwardly and forwardly and enacting with the pin 67 in the path thereof will fully return the toggle members 60. 62 to normal straight lin'c position, or until the stops 65 and 66 of the associated knuckle joint arrests such members and the pin 67 is brought to rest against the supporting arm 25. This occurs-before the type bar reaches the printing position under the actuation of the key 32, and insures a proper positioning of the pivotal center 13 of the link 9, and insures aproper imprint of the type at the printing point.
lt has been explained that a separate supporting Vbracket or hanger 17 is provided for each type action. As in the 'consti-notion disclosed in my prior application, Sr.' No. 3,365, these brackets are radially supported around a printing point, means being provided whereby each bracket together with the parts of the type action carried thereby may be individually introduced into and removed from the machine as a separate unit, and
'may be individually adjusted radially toward and from the printing point. The ccn- Istruction that enables these results to be obtained is thesame as in my prior applicatzon, Sr. No. 3,365 and briefly stated'is as follows:
The forward horizontally disposed. portion of each bracket 17 is received in a radially disposed slot in thc top of the front plate or member 2 of the machinel frame. 'A depending projection on the forward end of each bracket is received in a circumferential groove in a screw 17a threaded into a tappeti opening in the member 2. A rear depending end of each bracket is slotted (see Fig. 5) to receive theI web formed at the forward transversely slotted edge portion of a supporting member 17 secured to the base ofthe machine. The forward edge of the member 17b is segmental in form, corresponding to the arrangement of the set of hangers or brackets 17 at the lower ends thereof, and has interdental openings theres in, each corresponding in width to the thickness of the associated bracket 17. This construction provides a firm interlocking support between each bracket and the member 17b which holds the bracket against movement in every direction except that of its radial adjustment effected by the companion screw 17a. A screw 179 coacting with a clamping plate 17d holds the companion hanger firmly in its adjusted position and enables the bracket with the parts carried thereby to be readily detached as a separate unit when desired.
Thus far l have described the means/by which each type bar is'individually guided or controlled in its movement to travel. in one curved path or another to a common V'point in front of the printing center, and to move from thence in a straight line to the printing position to cause one or another type thereon to print in accordance with the key 32 or 33 which' is actuated. But ll have not described the driving means by which each type bar moved to printing position. ln the present construction I employ a single traintof driving means or connections for each type bar including motion governing means having a momentum accumulator, said governing means being arranged to decelerate the final printingvmovement of the type bar and to translate into pressure against thc platen the kinetic energy of the accumulator. It is due` to such meansrrcombined with the parts previously described that an imprint may be effected in substantially a noiseless manner. y'ln the present construction, as in the construction of my prior application. Sr. No. 3,365, operating motion is transmitted to each type bar from both of its printing keys through theabove mentioned single train ofy driving means to aetuate each .type bar with a siibstantially uniform touch from both its keys andprovide a uniform, or substantially uniform, touch on the keys throughout the system, as
will now be more `clearly described.
It has' been explained that the inde end-- ently operating lever arms and 55 o each type action forward of their common pivot 45 are of uniform character and are mounted to move in parallel planes. A main driving lever- 68 is provided for each type 'ac-' tion, this lever being pivoted at 69"to the associated hanger 17 and actuated by both of the associated lever arms 44 and 55. The construction andoperation of the lever 68 andthe parts controlled thereby are like those shown in my prior application, Sr. No. 3,365. Referring to Fig. 5, it will be understood tha-tas shown, I construct each ofthe levers, 68 from two corres ondingly shaped members spaced apart an held together in` .spaced relation by suitable means. As best shown in Fig. 5 each member of the lever 68 is provided with a forwardly extendin arm 70 having an inwardly bentlug 71, sai lugs having an edge to edge bearing, one against the other. These lugs constitute a contact that isvadapted at the limit ofthe operating movement ofthe lever 68 to bear against a suitable cushion stop structure 7 2 on the frame of the machine.
Rearwardly extending parallel arms 731 on the driving lever 68 each preferably has a curved contact or rolling tread74. A curved or rolling tread 55il on the overlying lever 55 co- 68 and is forked at its lower end t`o'coact with a segmental universal bar 77 which controls the escapement (not shown) for the carriage. The driving lever 68 also has an upright double arm 78 comprising two corresponding parts which straddle the associate bracket 17 and are united at their up- )er ends by al pivot 79. This double arm ,48 is connected to the associate type bar 3 through mechanical devices which, together with the main driving lever 68, constitute what has been hereinbefore referred to as a single train of driving connections including moment-um govemor means having a momentum accumulator. Such means are effective to transmit a. forward thrust to the type 4bar in a uniform manner Whether actuated by one or the other associated keys 32 and 33. This train of connections includes an actuating toggle comprising a double toggle link 8() made up of two correspondingly shaped members connected together but maintained spaced apart. The forward end portions of the members of this double link 80 extend on opposite sides of the type bar and are connected thereto by the 'pivotll which also connects the supporting link 9 to the type bar. A second double toggle member 81 is made up of two correspondingly shaped united parts which are maintained spaced apart. This double member is ivoted at82- to the forward end of the link 80 and extendson opposite sides of the companion bracket 17 and is supported to turn on a xed pivot 83 carried by said bracket. A single link or lever arm 84 is connected at one end by the pivot 79 to the upright double arm 78 of the main driving lever. The link 84 extends between the twomembers which constitute the toggle member 81 and is pivoted thereto at oneiend. as at 85,
and it moves the toggle 80, 81 to the substautially straight. line position represented 'in Figs. 3 and 4 to apply printing pressure along the straight line of the toggle. Rigidly attached to the link or lever arm 84 is a comparatively heavy weighted member 86 which normally rests on a segmental supporting pad 87 and serves as a momentum accumulator for the actuating toggle 80, 81 when the latter is actuated by the main driving lever 68. After the depression of an associated printing key .has been arrested, the
. J, momentum of the accumulator 86 will continue its movement to impart its kinetic energy to the toggle in order to complete the movement of the toggle members to the substantially straight line position, thereby completing the printing stroke of the type bar. It will be seen, therefore, that this momentum accumulator 86 is adapted to supply the final energy necessary to straighten the toggle 80, 81 when' the type bar has substantially reached the printing position. A contractile spring 88 is connected at one end to the bracket 17 and at the other end to the rivet 76 on the 'driving lever 68, and serves to return the lever 68 and the parts connected therewith to the normal Fig. 1 posi.- tion after each actuation, the key lever being independently arrested in its return movement by a padded stop d. In arrangement and principle of operation the toggle mechanism just described is substantially the same as has been used heretofore in the Noiseless typewriter, but some detail changesI have4 been madeto adapt it to the present ma-A corresponding or extreme depressed position of the key 33 is shown. In both figures the last part of the stroke of the type bar wasy e'l'l'ccted by the momentum of the weight 86 which has moved the associated arm 73 somewhat out of contact with 'the arm 44 or 55 with which it coacted. In Fig. 4 therefore the pin 67 had completed its stroke and assured the proper positioning of the lever 14 and pivot 12 before the type 7 reached the platen. In Fig. 3 the arm 46n had completed its stroke and thus brought the pivot 13 completely to its normal position before the type 6 reached the platen.
The platen carriage and case shift mechanism are more or less conventionally represented. As shown inv the present eX- ample the platen 89 is carried by 4a suitable carriage 90, supported through intervening ball bearings (Fig. 4) on a case shift rail l91, to travel from side to side of the ma chine. The case shift rail is guided by links 92 and 1s mounted to receive, together with the earrlage and platen, a single upwardly directed case shift movement from the' normal position, represented in full lines, to the upper case position. The platen 1s shown in the last mentioned position in dotted lines in Figs. 3 and 4. Any suitable means may be employed for this purpose. The conventional representation shown in the present instance includes a case shift key 93 and a lever arm 94 carried by a rock shaft 95. The latter hastwo rearwardly extending arms 96 each pivoted at 97 to a link 98 which in turn is connected at its upper end 99 to the case shift rail91. In
Fig. 3 l' have shown a lower case type 6 on the type head or block 4 at the printing point under the actuation ot' the key 32,
whereas in Fig. 4 l have shown a lowery keys 32 or 33 :is actuated.
ln order to actuate the type bar 3 and bring it to the printing position shown in Fig. 3, thekey 32 is depressed. This transmits a pull through the link 39 to operate the sublever 44. The rolling tread on this lever coacting with the companion rolling L tread on the double arm 73 of the driving lever 68 gives a variable acceleration to the motion of the latter, and also provides a lost motion connection between the levers 44 and68. This lost motiony is brought about when a motion of the lever 44, and the key 32 by which it is actuated, are
-brought to rest at the end of their stroke, as shown in Fig. 3.
At this time the driving lever 68 and the parts connected therewith, including the type bar, are permitted to continue their operation independently of the lever 44 and under their own momentum to effect an imprint without the impetus of the actuated key 32 and the parts connected therewith at the inal portion of the printing stroke. thub transmitted to the type bar is inthe nature of a thrust exerted through the toggle members 'and 81, pushing the type bar to the printing point and by the finalexpenditure of energy applyinga powerful printing pressure. The printing operation of t-he type bar by an actuation of the key 32 is accompanied by a displacement of the pivotal c enter12 ofthe supporting link 8, as shown in Fig. 3. This is accom lished by breaking the toggle 46, 47 from its substantially straight Aline position shown in Fig. 1 to the position represented in Fig. 3, due to the actuation of the lever arm 44 with which the toggle has direct mechanical connection. This results in turning the lever 14 on its pivot 15 from the Fig. 1 to the Fig. 3 position as hereinbeforeexplained, thereby changing the position of the pivotal center 12 of the supporting link 8 and causing the type bar to travel through a different curved path from that which it follows Lwhen actuated by the key 33, as indicated by a comparison of the dotted lines 6, c, in Fig. 1.-
An actuation of the type bar by the key 33 produces alikemovement of the single train of connections from the driving lever 68 to the type bar. In this instance however the toggle 46, 47 `remains at rest in the The motion substantially straight line position as indicated in Fig. 4, thereby holding the pivot 12 iixed against movement while the link .8 turns thereonf The actuation of the key V33, however, also resulted in breaking the toggle (it), (l2 from the dotted to the full line position .in Fig. 4. The cllect olf this was to move the pivotal conter 13 ot the link 9 downwardly and rearwardly. Under such conditions the type bar moved in a curved path indicated by the dotted line b in Fig. 1 until the type to be printed from reaches the point where the lines b and c converge, when the final travel of the type bar to the platen in substantially a straight line takes place. This results in the type bar moving in a curved path indicated substantially by the dotted line Z) in Fig. 1 to print from'onc or the other ot the types 7 or 7 a, depending on whether the platen is in the lower or upper case position to receive the impress of the corresponding type.
The construction and relative arrangement of the parts of each type action is such that near the rear or type bearing end of the action the mechanism is thm as viewed from above, and even at its po'nt of maximum thickness, which is more remote from the center from which the type actions radiate, each action has a thickness of only about 59g of an inch. This enables` twenty-two type actions to-be conveniently brought into a comparatively small widthwise space without unduly crowding them, and to effectively print in substantially a noiseless manner the requisite number of l characters with the aid of a standard fourbank keyboard and a single case shift. Moreover, the construction is such that it readily lends itself yto the employment or more than the usuall eighty-four characters when desired. and provides a light, fast and-highly efiicient type action with a substantially uniformi touch on the printing keysthroughout the system.

the driving operation as such is eiiected independently 'of said links and always through the separate and dist-inet single driving tr-ain from and including the lever 68, which exerts at all operations a thrust on the type bar to move it to vprinting posil tion always in a uniform manner.
It also will be seen that the pivotal supportl of the link 9 remainsfixed during the actuation of the type bar'by the key y32,
whereas at this time the pivotal support of the link 8 is automatically shifted. On
the other hand, the pivotal support of the link 8 remains fixed and the pivotal support of the link 9 is shifted when the type bar is moved to printing position by an actuation of the key 33.
It will be' understood moreover, that the present construction as a whole provides a.
a suitable type bar center guide, not shown.
The linkage by which the type bar is guided includes a number of joints or pivots,
all of which are free moving joints; but notwithstanding it is found in practice that the types strike the paper in goed alinement. The platen and carriage are `mounted and controlled the same as inthe wellmown Noiseless typewriter. y

In a typewriting or like machine," the combination of a type bar having a plurality ot types thereon, two actuating keys for the type bar, controlling means for controlling the path ot' movement of said type bar to print from one or another type thereon in accordance with the key actuated, said controlling means including two pairs of toggle members one pair actuated by each key, and means actuated by each key for straightening the toggle members of the other key and thereby assure their restoration to normal position.

In a typewriting or like machine, the combination in a type action of a type bar, a pair of supportingilinks therefor, a pair of actuating keys, means controlled by one of said keys for displacing from normal position a pivotal center of one of said links, means controlled by the other of said keys for displacing from normal osition the pivotal center of the other of said links, and driving connections from both keys to said ty pe bar including motion governing means having a momentum accumulator arranged to decelerate the final printing movementof the type bar and to translate into pressure against the platen the kinetic energy of said accumulator.

In a type action for a typevvriting or like machine, the combination of a type bar having a plurality of types, an individual supporting bracket for said tvpe bar, a pair of supporting levers on said racket, a pair of links pivoted on said supporting levers and to said type bar,'independently adjustable adjusting means for the fulcrums of said supporting levers, a pair of actuating keys, and means controlled thereby for moving said type bar selectively to print from one or another type thereon depending on the key actuated, said means comprising independently operable connections between sai/l keys and supporting levers by Which either one of, said supporting levers is held at rest in normal position when the other is shifted depending on which of said keys is actuated.

In a type action for typewriting or like machines, the combinationof a type bar having a plurality of types, an individual supporting bracket forsaid type bar, a pair of key controlled supporting levers on said. bracket, independently adjustable adjusting means for the fulcrums of said supporting levers, a pair of links pivoted on said supporting levers and to said type bar, a air of actuating keys, and` means contro led thereby for moving said type bar selectively to print from one or another type thereon depending on the key actuated, said means comprising devices by which either one of said supporting levers -is held at rest in normal position when the other is shifted by `the operation of one of said keys.
