Be it .known that FnEDEnroir THouAs OAKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawling, in the county of Dutchess and .State of `New York, has invented certain knew and useful Improvements in Rocking-Horses, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is a rocking horse for children, and the object is to provide a toy rocking horse having novel means embodied for iniiitating Vthe hoot beats ot a real horse.

In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of the horse;

Figure '4 is a transverse, vertical section;

Figures 5 and 6 are details of the 'front and rear legs respectively, sections ot the hoofs being broken away so as to show `the mounting of the hammers therein.

The invention consists ot a body portion 1 formed in simulation of a real horse, and having a saddle 2 and bridle 3. The body portion is recessed out or mortised transversely on the under side, at the front and rear ends as shown at 4 so as to atlord bearings or boxings for leg axles 5 which lare journaled therein and secured in place by latches 6. The mortises 4 are enlarged at their outer ends in parallel planes extended parallel with a vertical, longitudinal plane passed medially through the body portion, so as to form suitable leg sockets 7. Front and rear legs 8 and 9 are provided, the shoulders 10 thereof being pierced with axle holes 11 through which the ends of the axles 5 are passed, and the legs are thus pivotally or swingingly mounted in place in the sockets 7 upon the axles 5, the latter being releasably held in the mortises 4 by means ot' the said latches 6. The longitudinal play of the shoulders 10 within their sockets is so regulated, that on the back and forth rocking motion ot the horse as completed, the legs will be stopped abruptly short of a full or absolutely tree swing, by the shoulders impinging against the forward and rear sides ot the said leg sockets 7 in imitation of the movements ot' the legs ot a real horse in galloping.

The hoofs 12 of the :tour legs are hollowed out, as shown at 13, and apertures 14 are also cut through the walls of the boots.

Hammers or weights 15 are .then suspended, pendulumdike, within these hollow hoofs by means of chains or cords 16. `Rockers 17 are provided and supported in working re- `lation yby 4braces 18. A "flat, arched body truss 129, is lsecured `by its ends to the front and rear braces 18 and supported at its center by an upright 20. The body of the horse is rigidly secured to the upcurved, central portion of this truss 19 by screws 21 passed up through the truss into the under side or belly of the horse. The legs and mounting are so proportioned and adjusted that the hoot's 12 will not strike or impinge" upon the 70 rockers 17, but will swing back and forth clear of any interference as the horse is rocked upon the rockers 17.

In use, as the horse is rocked, the legs will imitate the motion and movements of the legs of a real horse, and at the same time the weights or hammers 15 will strike and beat against the sides of the hoots, thereby causing sounds to issue through the apertures 14,

lVhile I have herein described a certain specific manner and method of constructing and assembling the elements ot my invention, it is understood that I may vary from the same in minor details, not departing from the spirit ot my invention, so as best to construct a practical device for the purpose intended, as defined in the appended claims.

I claim:

1. In a device of the kind described, the l combination of a rocking horse having a body portion, rockers and legs, thelegs being pivoted to the body portion and swinging independent ot the rockers, the hoofs of v the legs being hollow; and weights pendulously suspended within the hollow hoofs.

2. A rocking horse, comprising rockers braced together; an arched truss mounted on the rockers; a toy horse supported byA its body portion resting upon and rigidly seleg sockets formed therein; legs pivotally 110 mounted within the said leg sockets and adapted to oscillate with a limited movement in a longitudinal direction and free of the said rockers, the said legs including hollow hoofs having apertures through the walls thereof; weights pendulously suspended within the said hollow hoofs.

4. In a rocking horse having a bodyvportion, rockers and legs, the legs beingnnatl taohed to and swinging independent of the rockers; hollow hoofs for the legs; and vweights pendulously mounted within the hollow hoofs.' f Y 5.
