Description

Feb. 9 1926.
Si. M. COAN SPRING WHEEL Filed March 21. 1925 Patented Feb. 9, 1926.
SHERWIN 1v1. conn, ornLLsroN, MASSACHUSETTS.
SPRING WHEEL Application filed March 21, 1925. SerialN. 17,193.
To AZZ whom t may concern.'
lie it known that I, SHnawIN M. Conn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allston, `in the county of Suffolk and State of lMIassachusetts, have invented certain new' and usetul Improvements in Spring Wheels, ot which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to spring wheels for vehicles and has tor its essential objects the absorption ot both radial and transverse strains and shocks, including the peripheral strain exerted by the vehicle in turning a corner, and the sudden checking of the advance of the vehicle. Further objects are strength, inexpensiveness of construction, and such further advantages and capabilities as will more fully appear hereinafter.
My invention consists, therefore, in the means and mechanism for producing the results above speciiied substantially as hereinafter claimed. Y
In the accompanying drawings which form a part ot this specification Figure l is a rear elevation with parts broken away.
Figure 2, a diametrical section on line 2 2 of Figure l.
Like reference characters indicate like Iparts throughout the views.
The structure as herein illustrated c01nprises circular iront and back plates or walls 4 and 5 provided respectively with central circular openings 6 and 7 respectively. The
former is closed by aconveX plate 8 attached by bolts 9 to the plate 4f or integral therewith. Attached to the peripheral margins of the plates l and 5 by lscrews l0 is a telly or rim ll. carrying a tire 13. In intermediate portions ot the. walls are annular series ot holes l5 for the reception of transversely disposed rods 16 having projecting threaded ends carrying nuts 18 bearing against the exposed faces of the walls. In this instance sleeves or bushings 19 on the rods have their ends abutting against the inner faces et the walls. Surrounding each rod is a 'double cone spring 2l, whose intermediate helices 22 are the larger', and whose end helices 23 embrace the enclosed bushing and abut against the housing walls.
A hub ring 25 is pro-vided consisting in this instance ot two annular members 2G united by rivets 27 to the margin of a. central opening' 28 in the body 29 ot a circular disk or diaphragm 30. The disk has a lateral peripheral flange 32, and the body is provided intermediate its center and the Hang-e 32 with an annular bend forming an intermediate lateral shoulder 34 and a transversely inc-lined web or connecting portion 35. The shoulder 84 is concentric with and parallel to the flange 3Q. The portion 85 has radially disposed circular openings 37 arranged to admit therethrough the springs 2l. The helix having the greatest diameter in each spring contacts with both the flange 32 andthe shoulder 34, and is lattached to the ilange and shoulder by U bolts 38 and 39 respectively.
In operation the yielding relation of the member to the body of the wheel, cushions or absorbs not only shocks such as eX- ternal blows from any direction upon the wheel, but interna-l shocks due to the operation ot clutches, or brakes, or otherwise.
It will be observed that Vthe springs are separately removable for inspection or repair, and that all parts are readily accessible.
I claim l. In a spring wheel, a front housing wall7 a back housing wall provided with a central opening, a rim attached to the walls, annularly arranged transversely disposed rods fixed in the walls, helical springs surrounding therods, a disk between the walls provided with a central opening, a laterally extending peripheral flange upon the disk, an annular shoulder upon an intermediate portion of the` disk concentric with the flange, said disk being provided with opening-sto allow' passage ot the springs there through, means tor attaching the sides of the springs to the fiange and shoulder, and a hub ring surrounding the central opening 'of the disk.
rods with their ends abutting against the l walls. helical springs surrounding the rods, a ydisk between the walls provided with a central opening, a peripheral fiange upon the disk, a shoulder upon an intermediate portion ot the disk, said disk being provided with openings to admit the springs, means for attaching the springs to the yflange and shoulder, and a hub surrounding the central opening of the disk.
3. In a spring Wheel, a front housing Wall provided With a central opening, a rim connecting the Walls, annularly arranged transverse rods connecting the Walls, Springs surrounding tlie rods comprising helices, a disk between the Walls provided with a central opening, a peripheral flange upon the disk,
a shoulder upon an intermediate portion of the disk, said disk being provided with.
openings around the springs, U'bolts in the flange securing the springs to the flange, U bolts on theshoul'der securing the springs to the shoulder, and a hub ring surrounding the central opening' of the disk.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature.
SHERWIN M. COAN.
