TAKE-DOWN SLING.
Application filed April 7, 1925. Serial No. 21,321.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it linown that I, VALTER E. BUZBY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita Falls, in the county of lVichita and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Take-Down Sling, of which the following is a specification.
The object cf my invention vis to provide a simple and eiiicient sling for convenient use l0 in handling the hole end of a drawn glass cylinder in the take down operation. The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved sling in use;
Fig. 2 is a plan of the sling;
Fig. 3 is a section, on an enlarged scale, on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a section, on an enlarged scale. on line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings indicates a strip of comparatively thin strap iron having a width sutficientfor required rigidity and bent into a U shape having an internal diameter somewhatin excess of the usual diameters of drawn glass cylinders, say from thirty to forty inches, and comparatively long arms. f
Extending from one arm to the other of the U 10, about midway of the length thereof, is across bar 11 which may be either rigidly attached to the arms or pivoted thereto by means of pivot rod 12 and retaining nuts 13. Secured to the middle of cross bar 1l is an eye 14 to which the lower end of a hoisting cable 15 may be attached.
In order to protect a drawn cylinder from chilling effects of the iron the cross bar 11 and adjacent closed portion of the U is wrapped with asbestos 16, or other suitable material. I
Cross bar 1l is spaced from the base of the U a dis-tance considerably in excess of the transverse dimension fof the U.
In use, after a cylinder 17 has been drawn from suitable sourcev of glass supply, and cracked off therefrom, the operator, grasping the side arms of the sling adjacent cross bar l1, embraces the lower end of the cylinder with the sling as indicated in Fig. 1, whereupon a pull exerted upon cable 15, in a well known manner, serves to draw the hole end of the cylinder outwardly as the bait end is lowered and thus assists in the transfer of the drawn cylinder to a horizontal position on the capping horse.
The handling of the sling is substantially .l facilitated lby the extended ends of the U shaped band 10, said ends being extended far enough to lie beneath the fore arms of the operator as the sling is drawn up around the hole end of the cylinder.
The cross bar l1 prevents undue collapse of the sling under the weight of the glass cylinder, thereby avoiding a crushing of the cylinder. Y
I claim as my invention:
1. A take down sling comprising a cylinder embracing portion, a pair of laterally spaced outwardly extending arms, and means for attachment to a hoisting cable, substantially as described.
2. A take down sling consisting of a. U shaped band and a cross bar extending between the arms of the band at an intermediate point, the arms of the band being sufficiently extending to co-operate with the fore arms of a user.
