I J. J. O'BRIEN J conz FoRumq DEVICE FOR SASH WEIGHT CASTING IT-Filed April 5, 1922 'ATI N AL INVEN 'I'CIR Patented Feb. 2, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPI'I J'. OBRIEN, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM M. BARNARD, OF SPRINGFIELD, IIIASSACHUSETTS.
CORE-FORMING DEVICE FOR SASI-I-WEIGI-IT CASTING.
Application filed April 15, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that JOSEPH J. OBRIEN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Core-Forming Devices for Sash- Weight Casting, of which the following 1s a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in core boxes for forming cores for castlng sash weights and its leading object is to provide simple means for impressing the weight number on the core capable of rapid insertion and rapid withdrawal from the core box.
The improved device for impressing the weight number on the core for forming the sash weight eye consists of a single piece device having interfitting companion jaws, one of which carries the weight character or type, the jaws being separable by the spring tension of the connecting portlon of the device.
\Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain new and useful constructions and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the following drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional View through a core box.
Fig. 2 is an end View of the device.
Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof.
Referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating the practical embodiment of the invention 5 designates a core box, which is shown to be formed in, one piece, and may be constructed of metal, wood, or any suitable material, and which is provided on its lower end with a tapered stem 6, adapted to fit in a socket or hole 7 formed in a suitable table or other support. This stem is shown to be provided with a plurality of faces to resist rotative movement in the socket, which is shaped to fit the stem.
The box 5 is formed with a chamber 5 in which the sand is packed, the lower end of this chamber tapering, and the side walls 8 and 9 of the box being formed with openings 8 and 9 disposed in registration with each other.
Serial No. 553,222.
Through the registering openings 8 and 9 of the core box 5 the forming device 10 is extended. This device consists of a pair of interfitting jaws, the upper jaw 11 and the lower jaw 12, each of which is formed U-shaped, in cross section. The two jaws are connected to each other by means of a spring U-shaped portion or loop 13, so that the upper jaw will be forced upwardly against the edge portions 8 and 9 of the side walls 8 and 9. On the upper jaw the weight character or type 14 is formed.
The jaws 11 and 12 are provided with stops 15 and 16 so that the insertion of the device in the core box will be limited and the character will come to a position in the center of the core box.
After the device is inserted in the core box sand is placed therein and the tension on the jaws 11 and 12 of the connecting spring is sufficient to prevent the upper aw yielding under the tamping. vlVhen the core box has been filled with sand the worker grips the outer end of the device and by hand pressure closes the two jaws on each other and then withdraws the device, holding the lower jaw against the lower edge portions of the openings of the side walls 8 and 9, so that the character will be depressed and may be withdrawn by a sliding action of the whole device. hen this is gone the core may be taken from the core The core is placed in the mould flask in a manner well known to the art in line with the impression formed by the pattern of the body of the sash weight, and the molten iron poured in the flask.
I claim 1. A core forming device for sash weight casting consisting of a pair of aws, one jaw being a U shaped construction and the other jaw having sliding movement therein, the first jaw carrying a casting character thereon, a U shaped spring connecting the jaws to each other and maintaining the same normal interfitting relation and providing a handle for the insertion and removal of the jaws from a core box.
2. A one piece core forming device consisting of a member bent upon itself to provide a pair of opposing jaws, each of said jaws being provided with longitudinal flanges, the longitudinal flanges of one of the jaws having sliding fit within the longitudinal flange of the other uw, the bend of 5 the device constituting a spring to maintain a slight out urd tension upon the jaws, one of the jaws being provided with a character on its outer face to engage the core being formed and capable of being disengaged lilierei'roin by pressure exerted upon said 10 an.
Signed by me at Springfield.
JOSEPH J. OBRIEN.
