JEREMIAH 0. BROWN AND ORANGE M. SWEET, OF FORRESTVILLE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNORS TO JEREMIAH 0. BROWN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEP-LADDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157, I88, dated November 24, 1874; application filed August 10, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ORANGE M. SWEET and J. 0. BROWN, of Forrestville, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Step-Ladder, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents aside elevation of our improved stepladder, partly in section; and Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of our invention is to so improve that class of stepladders which are provided with a hinged or adjustable standard or leg that the ladder becomes stronger, gives a more direct support to the body of the ladder, and presents a heater and more finished appearance.
The means for effecting this object will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A represents the body of our improved step-ladder; B, the standard or leg, which is hinged to brackets O at the top part of the body A. The sliding brace-piece D is hinged to a cross-piece, e, of standard B, and connected by guide bands or sleeves f to a similarly sliding brace, D, which is hinged to one of the steps of the ladder. The braces slide along each other, and may be adjusted by a clamp-screw, f, or equivalent device, to the relative positions of the body A and standard folding between the same when the stepladder is not required for use. The braces form direct support from the foot of the standard to the body of the ladder, while giving at the same time a light and neat appearance to the whole.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The two-part adjustable brace D D, pivoted near the foot of the post B and to an upper step of the ladder, to securely hold the post at any angle to the body A, as set forth.
