corYHoLDER.
Application filed .Tune 1, 1925. Serial No. 33,905. p
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HOWARD B. GOLES, a citizen of the United States, Aresiding at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new,
and useful Improvements in Copyholders, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a copy holder device for attachment to a desk or like support and suitable for. use with typewriting and other machines, and whereby the material to be copied or transcribed is brought into view line by line.
It has for its object to provide means embodying a single clutch mechanism and controlled either by the hand onfoot of the operator for eecting a step by step movement of a transverse line indicating arm or rule" over the copy to progressively disclose the same; also, to'enable from the front of the copy holder said rule to be quickly and readily returnedk to its starting position thereon. A further object of theinvention resides in a positive advancing means for said arm whereby the same is advanced a uniform distance at each step,v`said distance corresponding to the spacing of the copy and being adjustable thereto.
A still further object of the invention consists in an arrangement whereby, in addition to its-use with sheets and the like, a note hook may be readily held by the said device as when transcribing only is contemplated.
The nature of the invention, however, will `best be understood when described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. l is a front elevation of the novel copy holder.
Fig. 2 is a side view of said copy holder,
and Fig. 3 is a lan view thereof.
Fig. l is a ragmentary detail sectional view of the advancing mechanism; and Fig. 5 is a similar view illustrating theclutch releasing arrangement.
Referring to the drawings,7 10 designates a universahbracket whereby the novel copy holder may be clamped or otherwise secured to a desk or other article of furniture (indicated in phantom lines) in manner well understood, and positioned conveniently to the operator. This lbracket is provided,
also, with an adjustable extension arm 1l of the lazy-tong type for permitting the copy holder to be moved closer to or further awaylfrom the operator. At the top of this extension piece, several of the members composing same are bent laterally away to provide a support or table 12-for finished copy of a stenographers note book or'the like, as will hereinafter be more fully set forth.
To the outer end of the-said extension is adjustably secured the back or copy plate or support member 13 for the copy; and the same is provided at its top with a springpressed clamping bar 14 under which may 15 from one of its edges and corresponding to the table 12, preferably the right hand edge, the same being a distance from the bottom of the plate substantially e ual to the length of an ordinary note boo as is;utilized in taking stenographic notes; and the bottom of the plate is turned outwardly to provide a ledge or foot piece 16 which in some instances may be used as a support. A. spring clip 17, moreover, is provided along the bottom of the plate for retaining copy as well as the note book; and when the latter is employed, the portions of the same as completed are to be brought thru the slot 15 in back of said plate and rest upon the support member 12 to avoid over-balancing the book.
`When copying is done therefrom, as well as from ordinary sheets and the like held by the top clamping bar 14, there is arranged to move downwardly over same a line indicator as a swinging armor rule member 20 which is preferably of semi-transparent material as colored Celluloid, the movement imparted thereto being intermittent on step by step and gauged to uncover one line of the copy at a time. Movement to the said arm is communicated indirectly from a treadle member 21 which is placed on the such ioor conveniently tothe operator, althou h it is to be understood that, if desired, t e.
same may also be arranged for manual control. The movement of the treadle member is communicated to a flexible shaft, as a Bowden cable 22, and thru same to a verticall'y reciprocable clutch rod or spindle 23 by means of an arm 23 extending laterally therefrom. The rod 23. is mounted in brackets 24 attached to the back of the copy late 13 and is sprin urged upwardly, where y after the rod has een drawn downwardly thru the action of the treadle member in manner hereinafter set forth, it is returned immediately upon being released.
Surrounding this,ro is a sleeve or slide 25 containing a suitable one-way clutching mechanism as a ball clutch 26, the clutching portion of which surrounds said rod 23 to grip the sleeve to the rod in its downward motion but permits the rod to return freely therethru in its upward movement when suitably released. Thus at every stroke of the treadle member, the sleeve is moved downwardly a predetermined distance, which distance corresponds to the required copy s acing, and which may be altered thru a justment of a nut or stop 27 rotatably mounted on the lower threaded end of the rod and adapted to strike the lower of the brackets 24 1n its downward movement.
The sleeve 25 is surrounded by a further sleeve 30 which carries a bracket 31 having an inwardly extending arm preferably covered with soft material such as rubber,
' the same bearing against the back of the backof the copy plate to introduce friction for holding the bracket and sliding member as a whole thereto, the pressure exerted upon said arm and rule 20 being in amount determined by the tension of a suitable s ring,
as hereinafter set forth. The outer e ge of` the bracket 31, furthermore, is provided with a pair of outwardly extendingears 32, perv forated to receive and pivot a wire support member '33 for thesaid arm or rule member 20 and to hold. therebetween a sprin 34 coiled about said wire end. One end o the said spring is attached to the wire and theother to the bracket, `thereby tensioning the wire and its attached rule the desired extent to maintain the latterf in proper contact with any copy on the front of the plate. This construction provides for a resilient mounting which enables the rule to not only press down the copy but to be swung outwardly 'plate and held un er a clip member 35 at` thertop of the said plate.
mally, the projection 36 is out of contact with said end 37; but, as the rule 20 is moved away from the front of the copy holder, it engages the conical terminal 37 and forces the sleeve 25 upwardly to thereby release the ball clutch from its grip on the rod 23 and to permit the rule as a whole to be moved upwardly the desired extent. Itwill be noted j that this operation may conveniently be accomplished from the front of the copy holder in grasping the rule 20 or its supporting wire 33 and swinging it outwardly and then moving upwardly said rule. As soon as the rule is returned to its holding position on the plate, the projection 36 disengages from the conical terminal 37 and sleeve 25 is again locked to the rod 23 against upward movement thereon, said sleeve 25 being assisted to the locking position under the action of a spring 38 located between the head of the terminal 37 and the lower edge of the sleeve '30, being coiled about a portipn of the sleeve 25.
In'nstances vwhere it is desired to retain copy wider than that corresponding to the width of the plate 13, a wire support {not shown) may e snapped into perforatlons 40 of the side of liange 41 of the plate at the edge opposite that about which the wire 33 extends, the latter with its rule member 20 is to be furnished in various corresponding lengths.
