To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, ALFRED J. HIRTHLER and J OHN DREISTADT, citizens of the United States, residing at lVilkes-Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Cartridge for Blasting Powder, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in cartridges, which are principally used for holding the blasting powder for use in coal mines and the like.

One of the important objects of the present invention is to provide a cartridge of the above mentioned character, which is provided with a water proof coating, whereby the blasting powder is protected against moisture.

A further object of the invention is to provide a cartridge of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable, and further well adapted for the purpose for which it is designated.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparentduring the course of the following description.

In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the material used in constructing or forming the cartridge, and

Figure 2 is a sectional view. taken approximately on the line 22 of Figure 1.

In constructing the cartridges, an elongated strip of paper is folded longitudinally, and the free edges thereof are cemented together, whereby a substantially flat tube 1 is provided. The seam formed by the overlapping free edges of the tube is indicated at 2. A similar elongated strip of paper is also folded longitudinally upon itself and the free edges thereof are arranged in overlapping relation and are also cemented whereby an elongated fiat tube 3 is provided, the seam formed by the overlapping free edges of the same being indicated at 4.

The tube 3 is formed around the tube 1, so

thoroughly coated with the paraflin, thus providing a waterproof covering for the tubing.

The elongated piece of tubing is then cut in the desired length, depending upon the various sizes of cartridges, so that any number of cartridges may be obtained from a single length of tubing. The cartridges thus formed may be filled with the blasting powder in the well-known manner, and are then ready for use in coal mines, stone quarries, or the like. The water-proof coating on the outer tube 3, is indicated at 5 in the drawing.

A cartridge of the above mentioned character will protect the blasting powder contained therein against moisture, and furthermore the person handling the cartridges will be protected against any danger, due to the fact that the miner need at no time expose the blasting powder to a llama, when prcparing a shot.

\Vhile we have shown the preferred embodiment of our invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and the scope of the appended claim.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim is:

A cartridge for blasting powder includ ing an inner and an outer flat tube formed of paper, the free edges of said tubes being cemented together in overlapping relationship, the outer end of one tube beingdisposed in an opposite direction from the outer end of the other tube, and the overlapping ends of the tubes being disposed on the same sides of the tubes.
