.IIIII INVENTOR.
LUUIS GUDTHERTS ATTORNEYS.
Patented Jan. 26, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS GOO'I'HERTS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
MAHLSTICK.
Application filed October 10, 1924. Serial No. 742,897.
,To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS GOOTI-IERTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful. Improvements in Mahlsticks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in mahlsticks.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a mahlstick having a level in (:orporated in its structure, so that the stick may be employed for lining letters, without the necessity of first employing a level and a line and making a mark upon the object to be lettered.
Another object is to construct a mahlstick which may be employed with a hinged member for use in drawing circles.
A still further object is to produce a mahlstick which may be extended or contracted in accordance with the desires of the user.
An additional object is to produce a mahlstick which is light, yet strong and rigid.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my mahlstick,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of one of the joints of my stick.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view in crosssection showing the head of my stick,
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of my mahlstick employed with a hinged joint and compass ends, and
Fig. 5 discloses compass ends as they appear removed from the mahlstick sections.
At the present time it is customary to employ a mahlstick having a head, which stick is of considerable length, the mahlstick being employed for lettering and is used to rest the hand upon while performing the lettering operation. \Vith this type of mahlstick, it is necessary that the artist carry in his kit a level, a yardstick, and a large compass. These additional tools being of considerable length cannot be placed in the kit box, which is usually small. I have therefore devised a mahlstick wherein I have combined a level a graduated yardstick,
and so designed my stick that I may employ the same as a. compass.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be noted that my stick is composed of three sections 5, 6 and 7, which sections are preferably made of square tubular, metal which is of light-weight.
In order to reenforce the sections thus constructed and to provide means for joining these sections, I place in each section a liner 8, which has a tapered end 9, split as at 11. This liner is constructed of spring metal so that the end 9 will maintain a tight sliding fit with the next section.
At 12 I have shown a head having an opening 13 therethrough. A similar opening 14 is provided in the head sothat the user may look down upon a spirit level 16 mounted. within the head. The opening 13 permits the level 16 to be viewed when the stick is held in a vertical position and at a point substantially even with the eyes. This head is covered with a suitable pad 17 to prevent the slippage of the head while in contact with the object being worked upon.
This head is provided with a tapered end 18, similar to the tapered end 9, above described. At 19 I have shown a hinged joint to which the sections 5 and 7 of the mahlstick may be attached and at 21 and 22 I have shown compass ends which are inserted in the mahlstick sections 5 and 7. If it is desired to make a larger compass, four sec tions of a mahlstick may be employed instead of two, as now shown.
At 23, I have shown ,la level inserted in the section 6 of'the mahlstick, which level is at right angles to the level 16 carried in the head. This level permits the mahlstick to be employed in drawing horizontal lines.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a mahlstick which may be employed as is now customary and one which will further permit the user to draw horizontal or vertical lines by employing either the levels 23 or 16. I have further provided a mahlstick which may be disassembled and employed with a hinged joint and compass points for the purpose of constructing a compass. Longitudinal markings are formed upon the stick sections which will assist the user in laying olf any design or work.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same; and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a niahlstick, a plurality of sections removably secured one to the other, a level positioned in one of said sections, a head secured to another of said sections, said head having a level secured therein, the
level in said head and the level in said first section being at right angles to each other.
2. In a mahlstick, a plurality of sections having lineal markings thereon, a level formed in one of the sections of said stick, a head formed on another of said sections, a level mounted in said head, means for viewing said level in said head, said level in said head and said level in said section being at right angles to each other.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
LOUIS GOOTHERTS.
