, ELASTIC rnnnanmo AND ra'srnnrne DEVICE.
Application filed January 1 3, 1925. Serial No. '2,220.-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FAY L. KUELLMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in thecounty of Denver andState of: Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Elastic Threading and Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to accessories used in connection with garments of various kinds and has for its object the provision of a novel device designed to be secured upon the ends of a suitablelength ofelastic' whereby. to facilitate threadingtheelas-tic through the hem of a. garment when initial application is made,.the device further including two parts adapted to be connected together subsequent to the threading of the elastic into place whereby to hold the elastic in .embracing relation to the body ori 'limbfencircled thereby and positively prevent accidental displacement. 7 It is well known that very many 5111310188 vof apparel worn by women, childrenjand others contain a band or strip of elastic wliich,.in some instances, is intended to be' engaged about the waist, and which, in certain other instances, is intended to engage about the leg or possibly the arm. It is a matter of common knowledge that the elastic very shortly becomes useless on account of the natural deterioration of the rubber and it then becomes necessary to replace the worn. out elastic with a new strip. Under the ordinary practice it is necessary to make use of a bodkin, safety pin or the like in threading through a new strip and it is afterwards necessary to sew the ends together to make the proper connection.
It is with the above facts inview that I have designed the present invention which has for a more specific object the provision of a fastening device including separable elements, one of which is capable of employ ment in lieu of a bodkin or the like in threading a new piece of elastic in place.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character by means of which securing of the ends of the new strip of elastic may be effected without any necessity for stitching, thereby avoiding considerable expenditure of time, labor and preventing annoyance.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and n p n iv in man-alanine, highly Let 7 element,
ficient and durable in use, and a general improvement in the art.
WVith the above, and other objects and advantages 111 View, the inventlon conslsts 1n tl16"d8l311lS of construction to be hereinafter "more fullydesoribed and claimed, and il-' lustrated in the accompanying drawings in which: e 1
Figure liisa side elevation of one of the elements in openedaip or initial condition,
F i 'ure 2 is a similar View of the coactin 'Figure 3 is an elevation showing both members appliedto a strip of elastic and in interengaged condition, I
, Figure 4 is a detail section on the line 14- of Figure 3, and
Figure 5 is an edge view. Referring more particularly to the draw ings, the numerals 10 and 11 designates the twoelements of my device, and both of these elements are constructed from some suitable thin resilient 'material, preferably metal of such nature as to be incapable of corrosion; The member 10 is initially a fiat body provided at one end with a substan" opening into a transverse slot 20. At the junctures of the two slots, the corners are rounded ofi as indicated at 21. In actual practice it is intended that a strip of elastic indicated at A be equipped with the two devices, one of which is mounted at each end. In order to effect securing of the member 10 upon one end of the elastic, the elastic is laid upon this member and the prongs or tines 14 are bent, clinched or crimped over upon the lines 15 s0 as to bitingly or penetratingly engage the elastic and effect positive securing of the device.
The member 11 is disposed against and secured to the other end of the elastic in substantially the same manner, the prongs or tines 16 being bent over'upon the lines 17 and f r d int p n tr ting or it ng en gagement with the elastic. After both of the members have been applied, it is obvious that the elastic may be very easily threaded. through the hem of a garment, either of the elements or members 10 or 11 being introduced first, it making practically no difterence in view of the fact that they both have rounded ends. In this way it is evident that the use of a bodkin, safety pin or other make-shift device will be entirely avoided and the work of threading the elastic through greatly facilitated. After the elastic is in place, it is obvious that the ends may be secured in a very simple manner by inserting the arrow like head 12 through the slot 19, then moving the member 10 longitudinally with respect to themember 11 to bring the constricted neck portion 13 to the transverse slot 20, and then relatively turning the members so that the neck will engage within the transverse slot. When this is done the device will have the appearance disclosed in Figures 3 and 5, the members 10 and 11 overlying each other. In order to make the device conform more nearly to the curvature of the waist or limb of the wearer, it is preferable that the two members 10 and 11 be somewhat curved longitudinally as clearly indicated in Figure 5.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simply constructed, inexpensive and etticient device for the purpose specified which will be a great saver of labor and time and which will avoid annoyance. Owing to the simplicity of the parts it is evident that there is practically nothing to get out of order so that the device should have a long and satisfactory life.
"While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
In a device or the character described, a pair of fiat elongated body members each adapted for engagement upon the ends of a strip of flexible material and each having a plurality of prongs at its side edges adapted to be bent over and crimpe'd upon the flexible material, one member having a substantially arrow shaped head connected with the body by a constricted neck portion and the other member having an elongated slot at its central portion opening out in to a transverse slot, the corners at the junctures ot the slots being rounded, said arrow shaped head being adapted for insertion within the first named slot whereby the constricted neck may be turned and brought intothe second named slot.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
FAY L. KUELLMER.
