UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
i JOHN H. MURPHY, OF LOWELL, MASSAHUSETTS.
TOILET Ar-IAnn'rnsf Application nled September 5, 1922. Serial No.' 586,065.
To all whom t may concern:
Lowell, inthe county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and usefulu Improvements in Toilet Apparatus; and I do hereby declare lthe followingto be a. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which `it appertains to make and use the' same. Thepresent invention relates .to toilet apparatus and more particularlyl to toilet receptacles adapted-toy contain rouge, 'powder and similarv preparations, l
The object of the invention is to provide certain new and usefull improvements in connection with what are technically known as compacts and more particularly to double compacts, which contain bothl rouge and powder. or similar ingredients. Thesecom- .pacts comprise a container. of suitable size and form and including in addition to rouge and powder one or more lmirrors and puiis for the application. of the rouge andpowder. vItis desirable that when the container is closed it shall present a compact and attractive exterior and when opened shall permit ready access to both the'rouge and powder and permit inspection in thel mirror., In addition, yit is desirable that the mirror shall be protectedl when the container is closed in tacle for.v rouge, powder or similar ingredients; Connected to the container and adapt-v ed to lie between the two parts when the container is closed is a mirror which may be readily' moved into operative position when the two parts of thecontainer are opened. Inthe simplest and most efficient form of the invention which has yet been devised, two
,flanged members of substantially similar shape are hinged together in'such a manner that when open the two members forming the container may lie Aside by side in the same plane. A mirror is hinged to one, of the 1 members at a point removed from the hinge connection between the members and is adapted t0 be completely -enclosed by the members when the container is shut and to be thrown back into a convenient position when'the container is o n. With this con container is open both the rougeand powder are accessible 'and may be used as desired' without the necessity of manipulating the "skilled in the art from the following description.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred form of the invention Fig. 1 representsv a. perspective view of the container with the two parts opened and the mirror thrown back; Fig. 2is a section of the container upon the 4line 2-2 of Fig. 1;' Fig. 3 is a section of the lcontainer upon the line 3-3 of Fig-1; and Fig. 4 is a section ofthe container when closed.V
According tothe illustrated embodiment of -the invention, the container comprises cooperating members 10 and 1 1 which are hinged'together at 13 to permit the container to be closed, astindicated atFig. 4,
struction, it will be evident that when the 'or opened, as indicated in Fig. 2. The mem;
ber 10 as shown is provided with an annular shoulder 14 upon the exterior surface, which forms a seat for the flange of the member 11 and causes the container to present a finished, unbroken exterior when closed. The receptacle formed by the member 1() contains a cake of rouge, indicated at 16, which may be conveniently retained in place bya .ring 18 having an inner lip 20L4 which bears upon the rougecake and an outer ange 22 which fits closely within' the member 10. The receptacle constituted by the member l1 contains a larger cake opowder 24, which isA retained in place' by a ring 26 having an inturned flange 28. It will be observed that the inner dimensions of the receptacles are the same andthat either one may be employed for holding the rouge or powder by simply employing the proper. sealing ring. A single mirror 30 is in ed at 32 to the member 10, the hinge 32 eing so located with respect to the hinge 13 that when the .container is open, as indicated in Fig. 1, the
lic
remaining portions of the container, thus' minimizin the liability of breaking the mirror. sshown in the drawings, the
mirror conveniently comprises a back 4Q of metal or other suitable material, enclosing and surrounding the edge of the reflecting portion of the mirror and a projecting knob 42 by virtue of which the mirrormay be drawn back into operative position when the container is opened. It is desirable thatl pu's'for the application of the rouge and powder shall be contained within the compact and it will be observed from Fig. 'fl that there is ample space between the opposite sides of the mirror and the rouge and powder cakes for the'reception of flat puffs, such asindicated at 44 and 46.
It will be evident that this form of container'preents a compact and attractive exterior when not in use and when ,open provides a compact and' readily available unit which may be easily retained in the palm of one hand, leavingthe other hand free for the application of the rouge and powder. Furthermore, the opening of the container makes both the rouge and powder accessible at one and the same time and permits the single mirror to be utilized in applying either the rouge or powder or both. It will be furthermore obvious' that 'with the unit open, as indicated in Fig. 1, the .mirror may be readily tipped to .any desired. angle or inclination in accordance withthe needs of the user.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that the compact as a whole mayv be' constructed ofmetal or oi celluloid and similar .V
materials, in accordance with the require-v ments of the trade.
While it is preferred to employ the spef cie construction and" arran ement of parts shown and'described, it wi be understood-` that this vconstruction and arran ent lis;
not essential except so far as speci ed in the claims and may be changed or modified vwith- Voutdeparting from the broader features -of the invention. j
, The invention having been described, what. isclaimedgis:
1, A toiletreceptacle comprising two members hingedtogether and each adapted to contain powder orv similar toilet ingredients, and a mirror hinged to one of the members at a point olset from the hinged con- 'nectionbetween the members to swing at an angle to the swing of the other of said members and to be thrown back substantiallyxin the plane of the members when the receptacle isopen and to'be closed'over vthe Itoilet. ingredient 'in the. member to which it is hinged. 2. Aftoilet apparatus comprising twov cup shaped ,members `hinged together and adapted to contain powder or similar ingredients, a mirror' connected with the mem- Abers and adapted to lie therebetween when the container is closed, and a slip ring having an inturnedliiange adapted to engage with the ,cakeof powderor ingredient and' an outer peripheral flange itting'closelyv within the cup shaped member, the. rin' heing adaptedto retain the cake oingre ient in place within the member and to permit access thereto. 1
3. In combination, a container-'having a cover and acosmetic block having an oval. upper face arranged 1n said container, andv a guardplate formed with a central openlng proJectmg inwardly of said-1 container .and having its inner peripheral edgebent downwardly to engage and center said cosmetio block.
4. A, vanity case comprising a body memberfor receiving a toilet compact, a lid member hinged to lsaid body having means for' receiving and retaining a toilet compact, and a mirror plate hinged to one of said-'nientv bers to swing at an angletothe swing ofthe other of said members and to be closed over` the toilet compact in the member to which it is hinged.
