UNITED; STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS P. ANTHONY, OF EDGEWATER PARK, NEW JERSEY,
\ STATES CAST IRON PIPE & FOUNDRY COMPANY, OF BURLINGTON,
CORPORATION 'OF. NEW JERSEY.
NEW JERSEY, A.
' enrivnme AND I'OLISHING MACHINE.
Application filed January 3, 1924. Serial No. 684,114.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS P. Ari'rHoNY, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Edgewater Park, county of Burlington, State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Grinding and Polishing Machines, of which the following is a true and exact description, reference being had'to the ac companying drawings, which form a part thereof.
My invention relates to grinding and polishing machinery and has for its object to provide a machine especially desi ed and adapte for the grindin and polis ing of spherical pipe sockets suc as are used in coupling pipes together with freedom for angular adjustment with respect to each other.
The nature of my improvements will be best understood as described in connection with the drawingsin which they are illustrated" and in whieh-'- Figural is a plan view of my im roved machinewith a spherically sockets pipe shown in place thereon and partly in section.
Figure 2 is 'a front elevation of-mymachine .also showing the pipe partly .in section. v
Figure 3 is an end elevation of my machine taken from the right hand side of Figs. 1 and 2, but with a motor for driving the polishing wheel omitted.
- Figure 1 is a sectional 'ew on the'line Figure 5, a plan view of the plate J which in the construction illustrated separates the motor and polishing machine.
A, A, are grooved su porting wheels on 40 which rests the socket on of the ipe. B, B, are supporting wheels on which t e rear end of thepipe rests. A and A are the shafts which support the wheels A, A, and to which are secured the sprocket wheelsA and A connected by the chain A. A is a worm whe '1 secured to the shaftA and engaged by b e worm A driven *by the pulley A which in turn is driven by the belt A passing over the pulley A driven by the motor A. C is the pipe havinga spherical socket indicated at C. D is the base frame of the machine which supports the shafts of the L, on t grooved wheels upwardly extending standard D from which extend a pivot pin E and another upwardly extending standard indicated at D into the top of which screws the bolt indicated at E. F is the main frame of the machine which is pivotally supported on the pin E of the standard D and the opposite end of which rests, when the main frame is in operative position, on the standard D which is formed with a slot F to give passageto the clamping bolt E. This main frame is formed with an offset boss F and provided with a pivot pin H so located that i when the frame is in operative position the pivot pin will coincide approximatel with a diametric line of the socket C an pref- 'erably, as shown, with a vertical'diametric line. The frame F is also formed with a forward extension F and has secured to it a segmental rack, indicated at F. G is'a second frame pivotally supported on the pivotH and frame F, as indicated at G, and formed with a rib G which rests upon the frame F. This frame supports a ivot pin indicated at G and the second pin indicated at G, the function of which will be described. J is a plate supported on the frame G preferably by ball bearings, as indicated at J, and pivoted on' the said frame G by the pivot pin Gr passing through the pivot hole J, indicated in Fig. 5. Jf-is a larger hole through which passes the pulley or pin G, the hole J 3 being of such diameter as to per,- mit of necessary angular movement of plate on the pivot G. I is a shaft secured on the underside of the frame Gr carrying a by the hand wheel lever arm extending indicated at 1 J is a assrenon 'ro um'rnn A, A, and is formed with an the 'Worm I which is engaged in the segmental out from the outer end of the plate J and to 1 which is attached a cord K passing over a pulley K and carrying a weight indicated at K L is a motor carried on the outer end of the, late J having a shaft indicated at e end of which is attached a polishing wheel indicated at L I In the special and preferred form of construction illustrated in the drawings the pipe is supported and rotated by the supporting mechanism described and the frame F is securely clamped in operative position by means of the pulley E and in this position the pivot pin H carried by this frame lies approximately in a vertical diametric line of the socket C. The polishing wheel L is held in contact with the vertical socket by the action of the weight K which tends to swing the plate J in a direction to press the polishing wheel against the work. By means of the segmental rack F and worm I the frame G is angularly adjusted on the pivot pin Hso as to carry the polishing wheel over the surface of the vertical socket G and when the socket has been completely polished the clamping bolt F is loosened and the frame F rotated outward on its pivot E so as to remove the polishing Wheel, and'all parts of its supportin and actuating mechanism, from the mout of the pipe and permit its free removal.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A grinding and polishing machine having in combination means for supporting and rotating a pipe having a spherical socket at its end, a main frame carrying a pivot located to lie normally in an approximate diametric line of the spherical pipe socket,
when a pipe is in position to be ground, a second frame pivoted on the main frame pivot, means for angularly adjusting said second frame, a polishing wheel supported on said second frame in position to contact with the spherical pipe socket and means for pipe socket.
2. A grinding and polishing machine having in combination means for supporting and rotating a pipe having a spherical socket at its end, a main supportin frame pivoted at a point lying beyond tie pipe end when the pipe is in position to be ground and carrying a pivot located so as to lie in the vertical diameter of the spherical pipe socket when the frame is in operative position, a second frame pivotally supported on the main frame, means for angularly adjusting the second frame on the main frame, a plate pivotally supported on the second frame, a polishing wheel and means for rotating it supported on said pivoted plate and means acting on said pivoted plate to press the polishing wheel against the socket of the pipe.
