To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FORREST R. Coosn, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVaterville, in the county of Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Buttonhole-Sewing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
ldy said invention relates to a safety, device for button-hole sewing machines and it is an object of the same toprovide a device t the character described which shall be simple in construction and so accurate in operation as to do away with any chance of breakage of the button-hole cutting knife by engagement of the same with the clothclamping means.
Referrin to the accompanying drawings which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is a perspective of a part of a machine of the character referred to with my attachment applied thereto, and
Figure 2 is a perspective of the attachment removed from the machine.
The device of my invention is shown in the drawings as being applied to a buttonhole sewing machine of the well-known Singer type as illustrated in the patents to Allen, 806,231, December 5, 1905, and Allen, 713,213, November 3, 1903, and this machine is illustrated as being one of the cut after type, i. c. it cuts the button-hole after the stitch has been made so as to prevent the buttoirhole from raveling after it has once been cut. Such machines are ordinarily set in motion by the operator and then perform a cycle of operations whereby a complete button-hole is made.
In the drawings reference character 10 indicates the top or table of a sewing machine of conventional character provided with an arm 11, containing driving devices, etc. as usual. At the front of the head a vertical feed shaft 12 is mounted on the parts above referred to and this feed shaft is provided with a ratchet 13 operated by a pawl 1 1- in a manner to be rotated once during the making of such a button-hole. A reciprocating cutter bar (not shown) carries at its lower end a knife 16 which passes down through a slit in the cloth-clamping means, indicated generally at 17, said means being mounted on a clamp carrier slide as is usual. A lever 18 is pivoted on the sewing ma chine head and said lever is normally moved in one direction by aspiring 19 to elevate the knife. This lever is connected at its right end tothe knife bar or cutter bar and carries a pin 20 at its other end adapted to be engaged by a ledge near the upper end of a knife bar disengaging lever 21 having a laterally projecting arm 22 and a forwardr ly projecting pin 23 to which is attached a coiled spring 2 1. The spring is secured at its other end to a pin 25 on the arm 11 and serves to swing the lever 21 toward operative position, i. e., into engagement with the pin 20. The lever 21 is mounted on the front end of a lever 26 operatively connected to the stopping mechanism of the machine and adapted to be actuated in a manner well-known to those skilled in theart to elevate the lever 21 and operate the knife through lever 18 and the cutter bar when the ledge on lever 21 is under the pin 20, but ineffective unless the lever 21 engages pin 20. l
The parts thus far described are old and well-known. My invention comprises a slide 27 mounted on a bracket 28 secured to the arm of the machine by screws 29, the slide having slots engaging screws for guiding it for up and down movement on the bracket. The slide has a horizontal edge at 31 engaging under the laterally projecting arm 22 of the lever 21. A lever 32 is pivoted at 33 on the bracket 28 and this lever bears at one end against the lower end of the slide 27 and at the other end on the under side of the collar 15 whereby it is held for the greater part of the revolution of the feed shaft in the position indicated in Figure 1 and consequently holds thecslide 27 and lever 21 in the positions indicated thus preventing any possibility of actuation of the knife 16. As the feed shaft completes its rotation the rear end of the lever 32 which is beveled to provide a sharp edge 34 rides off the edge of the collar 1 n o the notch 35 permitting the spring 2-4; to move the slide 27 and lever 32 and to move the lever 21 into operative position relative to pin 20. This occurs at a time when the cloth-clamp has reached precisely the correct position and thereupon the knife is actuated. The knife is raised again thus completing the cycle of operatons and then the machine is stopped by automatic means not forming part of this invention.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of the invention and therefore I do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification but only as indicated in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with a button-hole sewing machine having a knife to cut the button-hole, a train of actuating devices for the knife, means whereby said train may be disabled at one point, means biased to hold said first-named means in operative position, and an upright feed shaft, of a collar on the shaft, a notch in the collar, an element constantly engaging said disabling means, and means held by said collar in position to retain said element in position to disable said train of mechanism until said lastnamed means falls into said notch, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a button-hole sewing machine having a knife to cut the bntton-hole, a train of actuating devices for the knife, means whereby said train may be disabled at one point, means biased to hold said first-named means in operative position, and an upright feed shaft, of a collar on the shaft, a notch in the nnderface of said collar, a lever having a beveled edge cooperating with a vertical side of said notch in the under face of said collar, and a vertically movable slide resting at one end on said lever, said slide bearing at the other end against said disabling means to maintain the same out of operative position until said lever engages said notch, substantially as set forth.
