UNITE!) STATES LAMAR SI-IOVER, OF MLWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
DISPLAY JAR s'rAN-n.
Application led December 22, 1924. vSerial No. 757,464.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LAMAR H. SHovER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain `new and useful Improvements in Display .l ar Stands; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. l0 This invention relates to display jar stands.
Gbjects of this invention are to provide a display jar stand in which a plurality of jars are removably mounted and are adapted to revolve about a central axis so as to display any desired jar in an attractive and simple manner, to provide a display stand in which the jars are securely locked in position, and to provide means to permit the ready tipping or rocking of the jars and to thereafter hold such jars in a slanting position to facilitate removing of the contents such as candy thereof during dispensing.
lt is to be noted that patrons may rook the jars around in a free manner and it therefore is necessary to provide means for preventing inadvertent tipping of the jars without the sanction of the dispenser.
A further object is to provide means for permitting tipping of the jars at only one position with reference to the supporting stand. For example, the store keeper may so set the display stand that the jars may be tipped only when they are presented towards him and are remote from the customer.
Further objects are to provide a jar display stand which will take any of the usual types of display jars and securely hold them against upsetting or falling from the stand and which is provided with means whereby the ars rock approximately about their renters of gravity when moved to dispensing position and are locked in either their vertical or their angular dispensing position in a simple and easy manner.
Further objects are to provide a simple, cheap and attractive form of display stand which may be readily manufactured by ordinary machine shop methods.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanyingdrawings, in which Figure 1 is a partial vertical sectional View through the device showing two of the jars in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the "structure '55 shown Vin Figure 1 with one "of the jars shown in position and with one of the supporting structures in section.
Figure 3 is av vfragni'entary sectional detail of one of the latching means for the jars.
The display stand comprises a supporting base 1 which may beotl 4any suitable size and attractive'desi'gn. This supporting base is provided with a threadedv "aperture Ainto which the threaded reduced extension Zof a short stub shaft or supporting spindle is secured. rlhis "spindle is provi-ded with a shoulder or collar 4 adjacent its lower end which clamps tightly against the top of the base and also provides shoulders upon which the hub of the revolving portion rests, as will be described later. The upper portion of the spindle is also reduced and threaded, as indicated at 5, and freceivesa plate f6. Preferably the aperture 'inthe plate 6 as well 75 as; the lower portion 7 of the reduced upper portion of the spindle 3 are square to prevent rotationof the plate 6 with reference te the spindle 3. A clamping nut 8 is screwed upon the reducing portion y5 and S0 clamps the plate in position. The spindle 3 is apertured and receives the reduced end 9 of an upright standard 10, such standard' being adapted to carry any suitable 'decorative or advertising means, or in fact an additional jar at its upper end in a well known manner, the upper portion of the standard being' omitted for the sake of clearness.
The revoluble portion of the display stand comprises a pair of disks l1 between which 90 are riveted the inner ends of the downwardly curved outwardly projecting supporting channel arms 12, as clearly shown in Figure 1. These channel arms carry v'the transverse or base portion 13 of U-shap'ed 95 supporting lmembers provided with upstanding arms 14. The upsta-nding arms of the U-shaped lmembers pivotally carry jar receiving straps 15.
It is to be noted that a basket-likesupport is carried by leach of the rings yor ystraps 121; for example, one of the supporting members of this basket-like portion is indicated at 16 and comprises a U-shaped member, as illustrated in the drawings. A corresponding U-shaped member 17 is positioned at right angles to the member 16 and the upper ends of such members are securely attached to the ring 15 and such members are further securely attached to each other at their point of crossing.
One of the members 17 carries an arcuate plane 18 provided with an inner and an outer notch 19 and 20. The corresponding upright 14 is provided with av bracket or with a pair ot outwardly projecting ears 21 (see Figure 3) between which is pivotally mounted a latching lever 22, such latching lever being provided with a curved outer manipulating end, as shown. The inner end ot the latching lever constitutes a locking pawl 23 which projects through an aperture 24 in the upright 14, and which is adapted to enter either' of the notches 19 or 20 formed in the corresponding arcuate member 18, as may be seen most clearly from Figure 1. Each of the arcuate members 18` form in eiect notched segmental devices and are provided with outwardly turned ears 25 at their ends which contact with the upright 14 and thus limit swinging of the jar carrying trame, as shown iu dotted and full lines in the lett hand portion of Figure 1.
In using the device, the jaws are positioned in their respective baskets or supporting members and are positioned vertically, the latches 22 rocking into place and holding the jars against tilting. When it is desired to tilt a jar as for instance during dispensing, it is merely necessary to litt the corresponding latch 22 and rock the jar into dotted line position, as shown in Figure 1, the gravity urged latch snapping into the outermost notch 20 `when the jar arrives ai. its outer tilted position. The jar is thus securely held in a tilted position while dispensing takes place. Thereafter, it is merely necessary to release the latch. The
' jars are rocked back into vertical position i'or the center or pivot points are slightly above the centers o't gravity of the jars.
In order to prevent unauthorized tipping of the jars, the members 16 are provided Y with lins 2G on their lower sides which have It is to be noted that the fins are of suliicient extent to prevent their disengaging from the notch when the corresponding jar is in corupletely tilted position.
It will be seen, therefore, that the jar cannot be tipped by the customer on his side of the stand and may only be tipped by thc dealer at a speciic point on the dealers side ot the stand. Further, the device cannot be rotated while a particular jar is in its tipped position, as the frame is then locked rigidly to the base portion.
It will be seen that a highly serviceable and efcieut type of jar display stand has been provided in which the several jars may be rotated past the customer until a selection is made and the particular jar from which dispensing is to take place may be rotated to a position in front of the dealer. Thereafter the latch may be released and the jar rocked towards the dealer.
It is to be seen also that tampering with the device by customers is prevented and unauthorized tipping of the jar is wholly avoided.
It will also be seen that a compact, attrae tive and strong display stand has been provided which may be cheaply and readily made.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, itis to be understood that the invention may be variously embodied and is, therefore, to be limited only as claimed.
I claim:
A display stand for jars comprising a base, a revoluble member carried thereby, a plurality of upwardly extending spaced arms secured to said revoluble member, jar receiving baskets pivoted between said arms, latches for locking said baskets in vertical or tilting positions, a lin carried by the lower end of each ot' said baskets, and a circular plate rigidly locked with reference to said base and having its peripheral portion in proximity to said lins to prevent unauthorized tilting of said baskets, said plate having a notch tl'irough one portion oit its periphery adapted to receive a fin and permit tilting ot' a basket when said basket occupies a predetermined position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of l/Visconsin.
