Be it known that I, WILLIAM 'SPARTI- VENTO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in th'e'county of Erie and State of New York, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in Hack Saws; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of element or elements with adjacent work or the like.
The present invention is in the nature of an improvement over that disclosed in my pending application 649,305, filed July 3rd, 1923, for Letters Patent'for a hack saw, allowed March 31st, 1924.
The more particular objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.

Like reference characters designate like or similar parts in the different views.
In carryin out the invention, a generally U-shape frame or beam is provided at 10, preferably being in extensible sections to accommodate various length of saw blades 11. A handle 12 extends from frame 10 and the terminals of said frame have fittings or barrels 13 and 14. The barrel 13 at its inner end has one or more notches or recesses as at 40 and slidable in the barrel 13 is a stem 41 consisting of sections 42 and 43. Section 43 has a socket of key hole shape as at 44 which "detachably receives a correspondingly shaped coupling projection 45 which constitutes a swiveljpermitting free turning or rotation of thefjsection 42' within the barrel 13 and relatively to and independently of the section 43. Section 43 is normally heldagainst rotation within the'barrel by'means of a pin or key 46 carried thereby adapted to engage the notches 40. Section 43' may slide longitudinally of the barrel so that the key 46 may be engaged in selected notches 40, according to the angularity desired for the blade 11. Blade ll h'as an apertureat the adj acent end'adapte'd to receive a stud 47 of section 43 and be exteriorly overlapped by a sli'dable latch '48 pressed outwardly by an expansive spring 49, located in a recess 50 'of sai'dsections 43. This latch in its projected position abuts the stud47 as well seen in Figure '2 so that the blade cannot become accidentally detached. Incidental to attachment or detachment of the blade the latch 48 is manually moved to retracted position against the tension of the spring 49. The outer end of section 42 is bifurcated and a cam lever 51 is operable in the bifurcation being pivoted at 52 to said section 42; A washer 53 engages the outer end of the barrel 13 andis slotted at 54 so that itmay slip over the bifurcated portions of section 42 and such section may slide relatively to the washer and the washer turn with the section. It will be seen that when the lever 51 is in a released position, the stem as a whole is free for sliding movement so as to engage the key 46 in any of the notches 40 according to the angularity desired for the saw 11. Before the lever 51 is moved to its fastened position it may be turned from the axis of the stem, as is permissible by the ball and socket joints at 44 and 45, to place the stem in the desired relation to the frame 10.
The stem 16 and adjacent parts may be of the same construction and operable axially angles and to be fastened in the difierent positions due to the engagement of the collars 19 and 53 with the barrels. In the present form, however, regardless of the angularity of the saw blade 11 and the adjustment of the stems, the lever 51v may remain at its manipulating end in line with the saw, that is between the planes of the opposite sides thereof, thus avoiding disposition at an angle to the frame as in the form of said pending application, and which in instances causes interference with the work in hand and with adjacent structure.
What is claimed is:
1.. In combination, a frame provided with a bar-rel, a stem section journaled and slidable in the barrel, securing means for a tool carried by said section, a second tool stem section slidable and j ournaled in said barrel, means connecting said sections together to permit turning of one of them with respect to the other and about their longitudinal axis, in-t'erengaging fastening means between one of said sections and said barrel, and a lever to coact with the barrel to fasten the parts in operative position.
