Be it known that I, MAURICE F. GRIFFIN,

a vicitizen ofthe-United States,.residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State offCalifornia, have invented new and useful 'Improvements in Trunks, of which the following is a specification.r This linvention is applicable to 'various trunks,.suitcase's, etc., but is more articularly applicable to automobile tru s, that is, those which may be fitted in closely7 to vthe rear end of an automobile, or carried on the trunk rack orI running board of an auto- 'mobile My invention may also be applied to hand luggage. My invention relates ,to improvements over the construction shown/'and described in my Patent No. 1,523 ,481,iss1'ied January 20, 1925. An object of my invention is to provide a trunk with novel and simple means whereby the joint between vthe lid and body is made both moisture and dust proof when closed. Another object.i. is ,to so construct the joint between the lid and. the body thatfit will attain the above objectand which will improve its appearance over other trunks.`

A feature of the `invention is the proi vision of a resilient edge at `the joinder of vthe lid and body so that when the lid is secured in closed position by the usual hasps such resilient edge `will be de ressed and' form a dust and weather proof joint andin this respect the invention is broadlygnew,

An object is to provide the edge of the trunk bod or lid with a resilient padding which wil .not be-afected by atmospheric or weather conditions.

A *further object is to provide a moisture and dust proof joint acking which yis efficient in operation, sight y in a pearance and may be readily applied wit a minimum amount of labor.

A still further ob'ect is to provide a 'novel auto trunk that will not trequire a hood or -extra cover to exclude dust and rain from entering the trunk at the joint, between the lid and body. Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompany- 6, showing' another modi ing drawing, the subjoined detailed description and the appended claims.

To make these joints moisture and Ydust proof, I provide'a strip 7 of va soft yieldvable material, and mount 'the same at the lace of joinder between the lid and body.

ed e of t e top edge of the body or to both from the front face of the lid, and is glued,

tacked or otherwise suitably secured to the lid 2. A suitable covering material 8 eX- tends over the lid 2, and this material is brought over the front edge of the lid and encloses the strip 7 so that the strip 7 is entirely covered and protected. rIhe material 8 is practically air tight and the ends 'of such material are glued to the lid, thereby preventing air or moisture reaching the packing 7 and consequently prevents deterioration and hardening of the strip 7 due to oxidation.

All friction and wear is carried by the covering, thus lengthening the life ot' the strip 7, besides providing `a much more pleasing appearance.

In Fig. 4 a strip 9 of yieldable material is suitably securedl to the top edge of thebody 1 at the joint 6, and the body covering material 10 extends over said strip and protects and preserves it in a manner analogous to the lid covering 8.

In Fig. 3 a yieldable strip 1l is positioned inl the joint 6, and is not covered by either coverings 8 or 10, and may be Secured to either the lid 2 orbody 1.

To strengthen and further protect the joint G against dirt and moisture I provide an inside valence 12, formed of a metal band 13. In order that the band 13 ma not engage the lid 2, or covering 8 thereo when opening or closing the lid, a spacing block 14 formed of any desirable material such as card board, wood, metal, etc., is

secured to the -body 1 between said valence and the body.

The band 13 rests` against the block 14 which spaces it the proper distance from the body 1 so that when covered by the covering 10 the covering 8 arranged on the inside of the lid 2 will not enga e the coverin 10 on the outside of the va ence.

.Y T e fasteners 4C are so arranged that the lid 2 is drawn against the body 1 to compress the strips 7, 9 or 11.Y To prevent these strips from beading outwardly and making an lunsightly appearance I make the said f strips narrower than the thickness of the lid or body material, and space the front edge of said strip a slight distance from the front face of the lid or bod as shown at 15, thus leaving a space which is illed by the strip beading outwardly when the lid is fully closed, thus making a flush outside surface when the trunk is closed.

The inside edge of the resilient strips are arranged flush with the inner face of the lid or body and when the lid is fully closed the inner edge of the strip is forced inwardly away from the lid and body and forms a bead which bears tightly against the valence 12 'to further seal the joint 6.

The hinge joint 5 may or may not be equipped with a strip 7, as the trunk joint at this point may be protected in a manner similar to that shown in my aboveinentioned patent. However, I have here shown several ways in which the hinge joint 5 may be made dust and weather proof by my present invention.

In Fig. 1 the lid is spaced from the body 1 and a fold or loop 16 of the top material 8 extends into the space thus eectually sealing the joint. This constructionis described and claimed in my patent above referred to.

In Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive I have shown packing strips secured to the body or lid or to both body and lid and covered by the top covering or lining or uncovered as shown in Fig. 8. v

In Fig. 'two yieldable strips 17 and 17 are shown secured to the body 1" and lid 2 respectively, at the joint 5 and a loop 18 of the lining 19 extendslbetween said stri s to cover and protect them. @bviously the loop 18 may be formed of either the top covering or the lining.

In Fig. 6 a single yieldable strip 20 Iis shown secured to the body at the joint 5, and the strip is covered by the body top covering material 21, which extends over and around the strip. If desired the strip may be secured to the lid and covered by the lid top covering material.

In Fig. 7 a yieldable strip 22 is secured to the lid 2 at the joint 5, and is covered bythe lining material 23, or if desired the strip may be secured to the body and' covered by the body lining.

In Fig 8 a strip 24 is shown in the joint 5 which may be secured to either the body 1 or lid 2 and is not covered by the covering material of either.

The hinge 3 is sosecured to the lid and body so that as the lid is closed the yieldable strips 17, 17', 20, 22 or 24; are pinched between the lid and body and compressed, thus forming a tight joint that willexclude all moisture and dirt.

I claim:

1. In a trunk 'comprising a body and lid members, and having a 'oint between said body and lid, a covering or the trunk members, and a resilient strip interposed in ing means in said hinge joint.

2. In a trunk com rising a body; a lid hinged thereto and 1liaving a hinge joint and a front joint; a yieldable packing strip in said front joint; a covering for said lid extending over said strip, said strip being narrower than the lid material; and pack- 3. In-a trunk having a. lid, a ,resilient strip along the free edge of said lid; and a covering for the lid extending over and enclosing said strip. x I

4. A trunk lid having its free edge provided With a resilient strip, and means covering said strip.
