Amay sit 'upor recliue, novel means beingl pro vided formounting the device in such a way -that'the same will not be much affected by the movement 'of the support wherewith the i structure is assembled, the yarticle being of peculiar utility on a vessel,l to prevent persons `from becoming seasick.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and vto enhance the utility of devices ofthat type to which the invention appertains. f,
Although apreferred form of the invention has been'vsliown, it, will 'be understood that a mechanic, working within the scope of what is claimed, may make alterations, withoutv departing lfrom' the spirit of the invention. A. l
In the accompanying drawings'z- 'Figure 1 shows in side elevation a' device constructed in accordance with the invention thesanie being arrangedto serve as a top plan of 'the structure. shown in Figure 1, parts being elevation. wherein theA structureI is arranged tofserve as .a chair; Figure' 4.- is a sectional view of theL .suspension means.; and Figure 5 is a fragmental bottom' la'n' showing a portion of the combined bef and chair, and, articularly disclosing the latch mechanism.
The device comprises an end section 1 p'rovided with ay proJecting foot rest` 2.l Plates 3 are secured to the sides of the section 1 near'to the inner end thereof. The plates 3 have inwardly projecting sockets 4. A shaft 5 is located in the sockets 4. The shaft 5 is held in the, sockets -4.- by set screws 6 threaded into the sockets. The shaft 5 turns at its ends in one end of a main section 7. The end section 1, thus, is hinged to the 'main section 7. In a similar Way, a shaft 8 connects the section 7 with an auxiliary section 10, and a shaft 9 connects the section 10 with' an end section 11. Toothed latch broken away; AFigure 3 isan on the bearin .person occupylng the device will not artic- ,lpate to any great extent in the rol mg or wheels 12 aresecured to the shafts 5, and l 9. Latches 14 are slidable in guides 15 on the sections 7, 10 and 1l.- 'lfludlatehes le' have heads 16 adapted to coperate with the teeth of the latch wheels 12. 'Each latch 14 has an abutment 17. Aspring 18 surrounds a"P portion.. of each'latch 14 and engages the ablitmenfi""l7 and one guide '15' to maintain the head-'16 yieldably engaged with the latch Wheel 12.'V Each latch 14 has zi finger piece 19 facilitating the manipulatin of the lat-ch.A Guidesv 20, are mounted f n? the bottom` of the sections 7, 10 and 11. Bolts 21 are mounted to'slide in the guides 20 and have linger pieces 22 fortheir manipulation.
Posts23 are mounted on themain section 7 at opposite` sides lthereof. Posts 24 are mounted on the endsection 11 'at opposite sides thereof.. Links 25vare pivoted to the posts 23. Links 26 are pivoted to the 'posts 211. The links 25 and 26 are connected by a rule joint hinge 27. A curtainl 28 is located at each side of the device, the curtains being'carriedby the parts 24, 26, 25,v and 23. f
The curtains 28 preferably are painted blue or, in any event, they are so constructed that f a person cannot see through them readily.
A suspension means is provided. The
' suspension neans` includesupstanding posts 29 connected to each vside o the main section 7 .f A spder'() issecured to the upper ends ofthe posts 29. lA plunger 31y is connectedto the'intermediate" portion of the spider 30. 'TheY lunger 31 reciprocates ina cylindrical casing 32." The plungerl 31 has 'a head/.33 mounted to reciprocate in the casing 82. A compression spring 34 surrounds the plunger 31 and' is located in the'casng 32.` One end of the spring 34 abuts a ainst the head 33,' and the other end ofie sprinw abuts against the bottom of the casin spindle 35 is secured to the top of t e casingl 32. The spindle 35 carries a ball 3,l e ball 3G is mounted to rotate and to rock on ball bearings 37 located in races 38 formed in a hollow inverted'frus'to-conical bracket 39 secured at 40 to an overhead support of any kind, which may be the deck of a vessel, designated at 41. y
The sprin 34 supports the device ieldingly, and t e balls 36 can rock an roll 37. The result is that a.
plunging motion of a vessel Whereon the device is located. The curtains 28 prevent the occupant from looking sidewise and seeing articles, such as chandeliers and the like. which may be swinging in vthe vessel, it being' a mattei' of common knowledge that the sight of swinging objects often will upset a person who, otherwse, would not be subject to seasickness.
When the device is arranged as shown in Figure 3, it may be used as a chair. By pulling back the latches 14 out ot' engagement with the latch wheels 12, the parts 1-7, 7410, and 10-11 may be located at 'anydesired angle with respect t0. each other, se that the structure may assume any position intermediate the chair, as shown in Figure 25, or a bed, as shown in Figure 1. When. the latches 14 are released. they will engage again with the latch wheels l2 under-the action of the springs 18. ln order to provide absolute security, when all of the parts 1 7-10-11 are in. alinexnent,
'as shown in Figure 1, theV bolts Q1 may be shot forwardly, beneath the parts l, 7, 10 and'11, or to make the device absolutely rigid. It willl be observed that the curtains 28 remain in place and assume their position automatically, regardless of whether the device is arranged a chair. as .zaown in Figure and a bed as disclosed in lfianre 1. Cushions 42, oi course may be used wherever desired.
I claim `1,'ln a device of the class described, a support for an occupant, means for suspending the support yieldingly, said means comprising a casing, a plunger adapted for reciprocation Withinsaid casing, a head up'- on said plunger, and a spring encircling said\plunger between said head and an end of said casing. and means tor suspending the si1ppoit-ior universal swinging movement. l
