UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
THOMAS J. KELLEHER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BENDING BRAKE.
Application filed June 9, 1924. Serial No. 718,782.
new and useful Improvements in Bending Brakes, of which the following, when taken in connection with the drawing accompanying and forming part hereof, is a full and complete specification.
This invention relates to bending brakes by means of which sheet metal of varying sizes and varying thicknesses may be bent or folded; and particularly to the construction of the bed and of the bending leaf of said brakes.
Among the objects of the invention are to lessen the cost of the construction of the bed of the brake, and of the folding leaf thereof, while, at the same time to retain the rigidity of said bed and folding leaf. A. further object is to lessen the number of parts entering into the construction of the bed, including the lower member of the jaw of the brake; and to lessen the number of the parts entering into the construction of the folding or bending leaf of the brake.
In the drawing referred to Fig. 1, is an elevation of one end of the bending brake embodying the invention.
And Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the bending brake illustrated in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the parts around the pintle 36, the apron of the brake, taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, viewed in the direction indicated by arrows; and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view showing the pintle at one end of the brake, and adjacent parts in section, taken on line l4 of Fig. 1, viewed as indicated by arrows.
A reference character applied to designate a given part indicates said part throughout the several figures of the drawing wherever the same appears.
1 represents a base member of the frame of the brake. 2 and 3 respectively repre sent leg members of said frame; and 4 a diagonally extending brace. The several members 1, 2, 3 and 4, are rigidly joined together by rivets 5, 5. 6, 6, respectively represent end members of the bed of the brake, which are, respectively, secured on the upper ends of legs 2 and 3, as by rivets 7, 7. 8 represents a horizontal member of the bed of the brake and consists of a metal plate. End members 6, 6, are, respectively,
provided with a flange 10, on which the horizontal member 8 rests, and to which it is firmly secured, as by rivets 11, 11. 13 represents a vertically extending metal plate which is provided with the curved upper side 15. Plate 13 is rigidly secured to the upper end of leg 2, as by rivets 16, 16. 17 18 respectively represent metal rodswhich are, respectively, welded to the upper end 15 of vertical plate 13, and to the under side of horizontal member 8 of the bed, near the forward side of said member. The curved upper side 15 is for the purpose of bringing the upper edge of said plate 13 as near as possible to the forward side or edge ofsaid plate .8, to increase the rigidity of said side or edge. 19 represents a bar whicliforms the lower member of the jaw of the brake. 20, 20, respectively, represent metal rods which are welded to horizontal member 8 of the bed, and to bar 19, to rigidly join said member and bar.
The upper j aw member of the brake comprises the inclined plate 21, the horizontal plate 22, the end members 23, 23, and the thrust receiving bar 24:. The forward edges of the plates 21 and 22 are rigidly joined by rods 25, 26, which are welded to said plates. The rod 25 is also welded to bar 24:. 27 represents a rod which is welded to the under side of plate 22, and to the rear edge of bar 2 1, rigidly securing said inclined plate 21, plate 22, and bar 24, together. 28 represents a rod which is welded to the under side of inclined plate 21 and to the inner side of end member 23, rigidly securing said plate and end members together. 29 represents a metal rod which is welded to the upper side of plate 22 and the inner side of end member 23, securing said plate 22 to the respective end members. The position of the upper jaw member of the brake is controlled by pin or bolt 30 in slot 31 of adjustable member 32 and the handle 33 and link 34, in the ordinary way in bending brakes of this character, and forms no part of this invention.
The bending leaf or apron embodying this invention comprises a plurality of ends 35, which are, respectively, pivotally mounted on a pintle 36, the vertically extending member 37 which is joined at its ends to an end 35, by a rod 38, which iswelded to said member and to said end, vertically extending plate 39, which is curved at its upper side or edge, as at 40; and said upper edge is:-rigidly joined to vertically extende ing member 37;. adjacent to thenupper side of said member 37, by a rod 41, whichis welded to said upper .edgeof. plate 39. and to said member 37. 42','represents a socket which is secured to end 35, in the ordinary way. 43 represents a rod in said socket, and
44 a weight on said rodhcRod ldand Weight 44, form the ordinary counterbalance of the pivotal lji m'iount'edsbending leaf of the brake.
