Description

Jan. 12 192s. 1.569 94 G. B. KURTZON DRAWER "PULL AND wlupow LI'P r Filed June I '7, 1924 may Patented Jan. 1 2, 1926.
UNITED STATES v 1 1,569,094 PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. KURTZON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T0 GARDEN CITY PLATING AND MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
DRAWER PULL AND WINDOW LIFT.
Application filed June 7,1924. Serial No. 718,503.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. KUR'rzoN,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Drawer Pull and lVindow Lift, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.
My invention relates to drawer pulls and the like, and it has for its principal object the provision of a structure of this character that may be utilized without alteration for a window lift. Another object is to pro vide a structure that may be readily fabricated and a finished article produced that may be sold at a moderate retail price. It is also an object of my invention to provide a combined window lift and drawer pull that is capable of ready assembly with the 1 drawer or window and which may be fabricated with automatic machines. In this connection I have provided a face plate having an elongated aperture through which the operators fingers may be inserted, and back of t-lre opening is a hox-like closure or extension that sufrrounds the opening in such manner that the upper and lower edges of the opening are inside the upper and lower walls of the extension so that overhanging lips or flanges are provided that afford facilities for grasping the plate when the drawer is to be pulled out, or when the structure is applied to a window the overhanging portions will prevent the fingers slipping off in raising or lowering the window. I
Iprefer to carry out my invention and accomplish the divers objects thereof in substantially the mannerhereinafter described, and as more particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings that form a part of this specification.
In the drawings 2- V Figure 1 is a vertical front elevation of my combined drawer pull and window lift showing the same in use.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the structure illustrated in Figure 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical rear elevation of the main plate detached from the drawer or window and with the rearward extension or box removed Fig. elis a vertical edge elevation of the skilled in the art to which the inventlon ap pertains, that while I have shown the structure in connection with a drawer pull it may be readily employed for a. WlllClOW lift by omitting the card-receiving holder that ex- 7 telnds upwardly from the top of the face a ate.
The structure comprises a face plate 5 of substantially rectangular shape having. a horizontally elongated opening 6 in the central portion thereof, and above the plate is provided an extension 7 that is likewise provided with a. horizontally elongated opening 8 through which a suitable index card may be viewed. In order to accommodate the card in the extension-7 the rear portion of said extension is recessed as at 9 by reduc ing the thickness of the metal upon the rear face of the plate around the opening 8, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings.
Projecting rearwardly from the back of the face plate is an extension of hollow boxlike construction that surrounds the open ing 6 and consists of oppositely disposed parallel webs 10, 10, that project laterally from the face plate at substantially right angles to the plane thereof and have their facing portions disposed along side of the end edges of the opening 6 of the face plate.
A closure in the form of a plate 11, of substantially U-shape incross section, is mounted upon the webs 10 and is of such dimensions that its end edges will engage with the edge portions of the web 10. The parallel or laterally bent portions 12, 12, of the closure plate extend forwardly toward the face plate 5 so that the longitudinal edges of said bent portions will engage with the back of the face plate, as seen in Figure 2 of the drawings. For the purpose of maintaining this closure plate in position I have pr0- vided stops in the form of short fins 13, 13, that project laterally from the back of the face plate both above and below the open ing 6 therein so that the adjacent longitudinal edges ofthe bent portions 12 of the closure plate may be engaged therewith in the manner shown in Figure 2 of the drawings so as to prevent said edges being sprung away from each other. The webs 10 are (ill provided with retaining lugs ltliat project beyond the planes of the rear edges of the respective webs, and after the closure plate 11 has been mounted in position upon said webs these lugs 14 are bent over in the manner shown in Figure 2 of the drawings so as to clamp the closure plate in position.
Suitable embossments or enlargements 15 are formed upon the sides ofthe webs 10, at any convenient location, and the same are bored and tapped axially to receive the screws or bolts 16 for maintaining the drawer pull or window lift in position in the manner shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.
From the foregoing, it will be seen I have provided a structure which is provided with an opening or aperture in the face plate, and the rear portion surrounding the opening is entirely enclosed by the closure plate 11, and the 'webs 10, thus forming'a boxlike extension upon the rear of the face plate. hen the structure is mounted upon v the front wall or panel of a drawer the panel is recessed sutficiently deep to receive the box-like extension and the screws or bolts 16 are inserted through suitable holes bored in the opposite side of the panel in alinement with the threaded bores of the embossments 15 so that when the structure has been assembled the bolts or screws will not be visible from theoutside of the drawer. hen the bolts or screws are tightened into place their heads engaging the inner surface of the panel will draw the face plate tight against the front surface of the panel and secure it in position. It will also be seen thatthe lateral portions 12 of the U-shapcd closure plate are positioned in planes above and below the respective upper and lower edges of the elongated opening 6-in the plate so that when it is desired to pull out the drawer the operator may insert his fingers through the opening and engage the inside or rear face of the plate, either around the upper or lower edge of the opening 6. When the structure is employed as a window lift the extension 7 for the card is usually omitted and the operator may'insert his fingers through the opening 6 and raise the window by pressure against the upper lateral member 12 of the closure'plate. The edges of the opening 6, between the planes of the lateral members 12, 12 of the closure plate, will afford-bettermeans for grasping the structure in lifting or lowering the win dow because of the fact that a flange is provided that prevents the operators fingers from slipping out of the groove or depression such aswould be the caseif the flange was omitted, as in the ordinary window lifts. It will also be seen that the closure plate, together with the webs 10, prevents dust and foreign particles whichmay fall behind the plate from entering the box-like structure and thereby maintain the pull or lift free from dirt, and the structure may be readily assembled from a cast face plate anda metal stamping so that it may be cheaply manufactured.
1t, of course, willbe obvious to others skilled in the art that divers modifications and changes may be made without materially departing fromthe principles herein disclosed; and I therefore desire it understood that all such changes may be made without materially departing from the scope of my invention as expressed in the appendedclaims.
hat I claim is I 1. A drawer pull comprising a face plate provided with an elongated opening, a boxlike extension .upontherear of said plate providing a recess back of said opening, said extension being, bored and threaded, and screws inserted through the rear of the drawer front and engaged in said threaded bores.
2. Adrawerpull comprising a face plate provided with an elongated opening, aboX- like extension upon the rear of said plate providing a recess. backof said opening,
embossments on said extension that are and screwed into embossments.
Signed at Ghicago, county of Cook and State of'Illinois, this'day of May 1924. GEORGE B. KURTZON.
