': Be it known that-I, EUGENE G. KiNNEAR, a citizenof the United States, residing in Evanston, in'the county of Cook and State ofIllin'ois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Burglarproof Auxiliary Locks, of which the following is a specification Q My present invention relates to auxiliary locking devices for vault doors or the'like and has for a principal object the provision of an improved and quick-acting device for bodyof'the door. n f Afurther'important object is the provision of a bolt work locking member so ar ranged with respect to ,the supplementary bolt thatrelease of the latter serves to automatically and immediately cause operation of'said member to insure effective locking action.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from I the following. description,
.Which,'taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, illustrates a preferred embodiment thereof.

I Upon the drawings, the reference numeral .11indicates a vault door, which may be of I [any of the usual types'employed. The combinat'ion lock 12 is positioned on the'interior,
of the door and contains locking tumblers operable from the outside by a rotary dial, or any preferred means. Main bolts 13 are provided on the door and are controlledby the combination lock in thewell-known manner. Auxiliary locking devices, generally indicated by the reference character 14, are provided in the present instanceiabove and below the combination lock, andlareoperable in manner to be hereinafter described in the event that effort is made to gain access to the vault by any of the methods commonly employed by burglars. e
The bolts 13 extend through a bolt rail 15,
extending inwardly from the door, and are connected together by a carrying bar16 secured to said bolts by small bolts 17. A master lug, or arbor, 18 is secured to the carrying bar 16 and adapted to be held in lockingposition by means of the tumblers of the combination lock, said luglbeing adapted to be manipulated by an external handle when the combination is operated. The bolts, when projected to locking position,e-ngage behind a door jamb 19. The locking devices constitute separate. units, similarly constructed except for the position of a releasing trigger to be hereinafter referred to and it is thought that. a descrip tion ofone of said units will suffice for an understanding of both.
' Each said unit consists primarily of a supplementary bolt 21 positioned in a-sleeve,
-or casing, 22, which latter is screw-threaded into the bolt rail, as shown at 23, and held in place by a lock nut 24.v Said bolt 21 is recessed at 25 and is held retracted against the tension of a spring 26 bearing against an end part 27 rearwardly of the recess 25. A cap 28 is threaded onto the rear end of the casingand is knurled .exteriorly, as shown at 29. Atriggerblock 31 "is positioned on the casing 22, just forwardly of the cap 28, and is adapted to be secured to a plate on the door by means of screws 32 and 33 extending throughapertures 34 and 35. Said block is held in place upon the casing by means of set screws 36.
A trigger 37 is provided to normally hold the bolt 21 in retracted position and it will be noted that this'trigger must be different- 1y positioned in the upper and lower looking units. In the lower unit, it is positioned asshown in Fig. 5, extending through an aperture 38 from the top of the block, whereas the trigger on the upper device is arranged as shown in Fig. 6, extending upwardly through an aperture 39 in the lower .palrtof the block 31. A shoulder 41 is provided at the inner end of the trigger 37 and a screw a2 is positioned to close the aperture through which the trigger extends, a spring 18 being positioned within said aperture and bearing upon the head' l-l. A ring 14: is provided in the outer end of the trigger 37 and operatingconnections, to be now described, are secured in said rin A connection 15 extends from the ring through guide'rings a6 and 17, across the combination *lock12,'and is'anchored to a fixed part on the door at 48. A s'econdconnection 49 extends from the ring to the end of a spring 51, which has its opposite end permanently connected to the door. A connection 51 extends upwardly from the spring 51 about a sheave 52 and thence about another sheave and down behind the bolt carrying bar, being directed behind the master ing 18 and again downwardly and around another sheave 52"and upwardly to the lower end of a second spring 53. It will be manifest that a pull exerted upon the connection 45, by disturbanc of the combination lock 12 either by. punching or blowing, or otherwise causing abnormal movement of the rear plate on said lock, will cause the trigger 87 to be withdrawn,
' allowing the auxiliary bolt 21 to be projected to locking position. Similarly, if the connection 51 should be severed, as by'bu'rn- 'ingthrough with a torch, the'sprzng 51 will cause the connection L9 to withdraw said I through an aperture 56 in the casing 22 and a slide 57 is positioned between said casing and the block 31, this slide being apertured at 58' to correspond to the aperture 56 in the casing and being under the tension of a spring 59 which moves it when thetrigger is withdrawn to position preventing the reengagement'of said trigger with the bolt 21 without manipulating said slide.
In the foregoing manner, the door is relo'ckedby means of'the supplementary bolt 21 with normallysuccessful results, but I prefer also to employ an 'auxiliary'locking means or mechanism for relocking the'main bolt work or mechanism of the door, thus rendering the device more effective. For this purpose, I employ a gravity arm 61, which is pivoted at 62011 the lower end of the block 31. Said arm is-normally held in inoperative position by means of a-slotted clip 63 engaging over the head of a screw 61 threaded into the auxiliary bolt. It will be manifest that discharge of the bolt will rause said screw to be disengaged from the clip, permitting the arm 61 to drop down by gravity and by the force of a spring 65 which is connected'at 66 to the lower'side of the arm and at 67 to "the block 31. Stop blocks'GS are secured to the'carryin'g bar 16, by means of screws 69,'theiposition of these blocks being slightly below theouter ends of firearms 61 when the latter are in raised position. Release of said arms causes immediate engagement with the blocks '68 to prevent withdrawal of the main bolts and it is to be noted that, in view of the position of'said arm and the'employinentof the spring 65, this action will bepi'actically instantaneous and thus will be'effe'ctive against eii'o'rts to throw the bolt mechanism before th arm could en age and thus the vault will be as eiiectivel I locked,'and*even more so than before operation of the device, since not only will the bolt'work beheld in looking position, but the supplementaiybolts 21 will be projected to locking position.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood froin the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be 11121018 in the form, construction and ar- "rang'enient of the parts without departing from the-spirit and scope of the invention, or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being 'mer ly a preferred einbodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. The combinationof a 'vault door or the like, having main locking bolt mechanism thereon, means on the 'door for controlling said mechanism, and an auxiliary locking device operable by disturbance of said controlling means or by burning through the door, said device comprising a separate bo'lt projectable into locking position, and "separate means movable relatively to said separate bolt 'for engaging and lockings'aid' main bolt mecha'nism"against'withdrawal.
2. The combination o'f'a vault door or the like, having'main locking bolt mechanism thereon, means on the door for 'controlling said mechanism,'and anau'xiliary locking mechanism operable by "disturbance of said controlling means or 'by burning through the door, said auxiliary locking mechanism comprising a separate bo'lt projectable into locking and engage'i'nent' with the frame of the'door and separate locki'n means releasable "by movement of "sai lockin tion a apted upondisturbance to discharge said auxiliar lock, said auxiliary locking device nclu mg a supplementary bolt, a
pivoted lug positioned horizontally beneath said bolt, and means operable by projection of the bolt for. causing immediate en: gagement of said lug with a part of said bolt. Work to relock the latter.
4. The combination of a door having main bolt work thereon, means for controlling and locking! said bolt work, and an auxiliary locking device including a supplementary bolt, means for discharging said bolt by an attack upon the door, and means releasably suspended from said bolt and operable by discharge thereof to engage and thereby relock said main bolt work.
5. The combination of a door having main bolt work thereon, means for controlling and locking said bolt Work, and an auxiliary locking device including a supplementary bolt, means fordischargmg said bolt "by an attack upon the door, and separate looking means releasably suspended from said bolt and operable by discharge thereof to relock said main bolt work, said bolt work including a partengageable by said lastmentioned means and said means being mounted in close relationship to said part and adapted for immediate engagement thereof.
6. The combination of a door having main bolt work thereon, means for controlling and locking said bolt work, and an auxiliary locking device, including a supplementary bolt, means for discharging said bolt by an attack upon the door, and means suspended from said bolt and operable by discharge thereofto relock said main bolt work, said bolt workincluding a part engageable by said last-mentioned means and said means comprising a gravity actuated lug arranged belt in close relationship to said part whereby immediate engagement with the latter is effected.
7. The combination of a door having main bolt work thereon, means for controlling and locking said bolt work, and an auxiliary locking device includin a supplementary bolt, means for discharging said bolt by an attack upon the door, and means suspended from said bolt and operable by discharge thereof to relock said main bolt work, said bolt work including a part engageable by said last-mentioned means and said means comprisinga gravity and spring actuated lug mounted in close relationship tojsaid part whereby immediate engagementwith the latter is effected. 8. The combination of a vault door or the like having a main locking bolt mechanism, control means on the door for controlling said locking bolt mechanism, and auxiliary locking mechanism operable by disturbance of said control means or by burning through the door, said auxiliary locking mechanism comprising a locking device for locking said main locking bolt mechanism, separate means for locking the vault door by engagement with the frame of the door, and
means releasable by disturbance of the control means for locking said separate means in a retracted position, said locking device being controlled by said separate means.
9. The combination of a vault door, or the like, having a main locking bolt mechanism, means on the door for controlling said mechanism, andan auxiliary locking mechanism, said auxiliary locking mechanism comprising a bolt locking device for locking said main bolt mechanism, a door locking device for engaging the frame of the vault door,-
and a latch device operable by disturbance of said controlling mechanism for releasing said door locking bolt, said bolt locking de vice being held in a normal inoperative POSlf tion by said door-locking bolt and being released thereby upon operation thereof.
