INVENITOR. Thomas JKzliv v w' Patented Jan. 5, 1926.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS J. KIr'ro, or wI'oHI'rA FALLS, TEXAS.
AUTOMATIC HOSE-WINDING REEL.
Application filed May 18, 1925. Serial No. 31,137.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. Krr'ro, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wichita Falls, in the county of fichita and tate of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic the same from the source of supply.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character comprising a supporting frame for the reel, mounted for horizontal rotation with the reel and mounted for vertical rotation in the frame.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character comprising an oblong supporting frame, a hose reel mounted in one portion of the frame, and an information bearing element supported in another portion of the frame.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, including a supporting frame, a hose reel, means for detachably' supporting the reel in said frame, a holding element attached to said reel, and a hose coupled intermediate the ends to said holding element and adapted to be reversely wound upon the reel at opposite sides of the holding element.
With these and other objects in View, the inventionconsists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown, described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention,
Fig. 1 is a front elevation partly in section of the improved device.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail of the hose winding reel.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the reel as shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4: is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, of the core portion of the reel looking in the direction of the arrow.
Fig. 5 is a detached perspective View of the spring holding clip.
Fig. 6 is anenlarged detail of the coupling at the detachable end of the reel core.
The im roved device is designed more particular y for use in garages, filling stations, and the'like, for supplying compressed j air to pneumatic tires, and may be erected permanently in position or mounted for rotation in a stationary support such as the floor of a garage, filling station or the like, or other locality, but for the purpose of illustration is shown mounted on a concrete foundation, as hereinafter explained. The improved device includes a supporting frame, preferably of tubing as shown, and includes spaced vertical side portions 10-41, transverse end portions 12 and 13 and an intermediate transverse portion 14:. The supporting frame may be supported in any suitable manner, but is preferably ro-.
tatively supported, for instance in a tubular socket member 15 embedded at one end in a concrete base 16 or the like, and in which a stud extending. from the member 13 isreceived.
The stud is preferably formed of a short section or nipple 17 connected to the member 13 by a T coupling 18, at one end, and connected toa large tubular section 18 by a reducing coupling 19, the larger section 18 is the portion which is received in the socket 15, and is held in place by a stop collar 20. By this means the frame is arranged to be freely rotated in the socket member.
The socket 15 and the larger po'rtionylS of the stud are perforated transversely to receive a bolt 21 apertured to receive a lock device 22 to enable the frame to be locked both from rotation and removal from the socket, to prevent unauthorized use of the device. 1
Supported as by clips 23 in the frame above the transverse member 14 is a framelike device 24 to receive advertising matter, prlinouncements, prices of gasoline or the Disposed between the sides 10 and 11 of the frame and below the intermediate transverse member 14, is a hose reel formed with.
a tubular core 25 and disk shaped members 26 near the ends, the latter connected by radially arranged slatsor staves 27, which form a drumlike structure on which the hose is wound.
At one end the core member is provided with an outwardly directed stud or trunnion 28 engaging in a socket or bearing in the frame member 10.
Embedded in sockets or seats 30 in the opposite end of the core 25, is a clip like element including a body portion 31 and inilk wardly directed terminals 32 and a central bearing 33 to receive a shaft 34.
At its inner end the shaft 34 is received in a socket 35 in the closed end of the core member 25, and is formed with an oblong terminal 36 at the other end to be received in an elongated socket 37 in the frame member 11, the socket being preferable L-shaped as shown in Fig. 6.
By this means the shaft 34 is held from rotation but an be detached together with the reel device by merely elevating the shaft at one end to release the oblong portion 36 from the elongated socket 37, the latter being of sniiicient length to permit this movement.
A spring 38 surrounds the shaft 34 within the core 25, and is coupled to the shaft 34 at one end as shown at 39, and entwined around the portions 31 of the clip device 30 at the other end. By this means the reel is yieldably supported in one position and is automatically returned to its former position when released, as hereafter explained.
Attached to one of the bars or staves 27- of the reel is a holding element represented conventionally at 39, and in which the hose, represented at 40, is loosely received intermediate the ends, as shown in Fig. 1, the hose being reversely wound upon the reel at opposite side of the holding element 39, as shown in Fig. 1.
At one end the hose 40 is provided with a coupling device represented conventionally at 41 to be attached to the air valve of a pneumatic tire, and coupled at the other end at 42 a source of supply of compressed air, not shown.
Initially, the hose will be wound upon the reel at the left side of the holding element, and unwound from the reel at the right side as shown in Fig. 1. Then when a tire'is to he charged the operator applies a pulling force upon the left hand portion of the hose and unwinds a sufficient quantity to carry the coupling 41 to the air valve of the tire and couples the hose thereto. This pulling action on the hoserotates the reel and winds up the spring 38 and likewise winds the portion of the hose at the right of the holding device upon the reel, the slack of the hose at the right permitting this action.
The valve 43 is used only when the air is to be shut off for any reason, but generally the air pressure in the hose is constant, the valve 41 being of the usual construction which is opened automatically when applied to the air valve of the tire and automatically closed when detached from the air valve. The hose is thus fully charged with compressed air while upon the reel, and requires no attention from the operator other than to couple and uncouple the valve 41 with the air valve of the tire.
Attached by clamp nuts 44 to the transverse frame member 14 are forked guard devices 45 to engage over the upper sides of the end disks 26 of the reel, to prevent the hose from riding the reel ends, and similar forked guide devices 46 are coupled by clamp nuts 47 to the lower transverse frame member 13, and engage over the lower sides of the reel ends 26, for the same purpose.
The stock portion of each of the forked guards 46 are of suiiicient length to support a roller 48, to be engaged by the hose when being wound and unwound, to reduce the friction.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured, and of any size or capacity.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification. but it will be understood that modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is 1. A device of the class described comprising a supporting frame, a reel device mounted for rotation relative to said frame and including terminal disks, and guard devices connected to said frame and including forked portions for receiving the edges of said disks.
2. A device of the class described comprising a supporting frame, a reel device mounted for rotation relative to said frame and including terminal disks, guard devices connected to said frame and including forked portions for receiving the edges of said disks, and rollers carried by said guard devices.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a supporting frame, means for rotatably supporting said frame, a winding reel mounted for rotation in said frame, yieldable means operative to maintain said reel in one position, a holding element attached to said reel, a hose engaged by said holding element intermediate the ends thereof and adapted to be reversely wound upon the reel at opposite sides of the holding element, and guard devices connected to said frame and including portions for receiving the edges of said disks.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature hereto.
THOMAS J. KITTO.
