SHEET FE E D GUIDE 'I'1IECHANISM'..
- Application filed-January 17, 1924 Serial no. 686,796.
T 0 all whom it may concern? Be'it known that I, HOWARD MK BARBER,
a citizen of the-United States; and resident of Stonington, in the county "of New London and State of'Gonnectieut, have inventedm new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Feed Guide Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification; Y 1
In sheet-deed guide mechanisms it has heretofore been customary toprovide-each of'thexsheet stops with its own independent into proper position with respect to said sheet taking device A practical embodiment of my invention is 'repres'entedw in the accompanying; draw in'gs, in'which Y Fig; 1 represents a sheet feed gguid'e mechanism and its adjacent parts in "side elevation.
Fig. 2 represents *thesameilntop plan,
the sheet taking rotary cylinderbeing re Fig. 3 representsa detail section oma larger scale 1 taken-i11 the plane o t the line III-IH of Fig 2, looking? in the direction of the arrows.-
Eig. 4: represents a detail section on a larger scale, takenin theplane of the line IV-IV of Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows. v
The sheet taking device may be a rotary cylinder 1, suitably mounted between side frames 2 and 3 of the machine. The cam 4 is carried by the shaft 5 of the rotary cylinder 1 for controlling the movement of the sheet stop shaft operating lever ,6 of the sheet feed guide mechanism. I
The sheet feed guide mechanism includes the endless tape carrier 7', the upper i and lower sheet guides 8 and 9 and the sheet stops lO carried-by the roclc shaft 11: Each .end
of the: sneeti'stop; rock: shaft 11" is mounted in the =lieadl2 of an end bearing, whichhead is slidably =mounted"and held against "turnmg and 1st of a yoke of a so cketflfi, secured fixedly to thesideframe;
between upper and-rlower branches 13' Each of these end bearings is provided with a serewthreaded shank 16 which passes through 'a recess 17' in the'socket 15.- The shank 16:01 one endbearingh as a Wormgear 18 th'readed="tl1e1'eo11 and the shank 16*01 :the other end bearing has a worm gear-19th'read ed tli'ereonyboth oi said worm gears-being yieldingly held pressed: against the ends-of their sockets by coil springs -20 snrrounding the shanks inthe recess 17" otthe sockets an inner cross shaft 21' is inOuntedfinthe side frames 2and'3 ancl-'it is provided-With a wornrQQ which meshes with the wornr gear 18; rotatably mounted 'on the inner cross shaft 21 and it is provided with'xa 'worm Qtwhich meshes with the worm gear 19. At one side of the machine the end of the inner cross shaft-21 isprovided with a handle 25-and the corresponding ends of the outercross shaft--23 with adrandle 26. Atsetscrew-27 is carriedby the handle 26 in pcs-itioirto lockthe-two -shafts to. turn together when desired-,' to movethe sheetstop carrying rock shaft bodily toward-' and away from I the sheet taking device.
The rock lever 6* is fixed to the -end oii' 'the sheet stop shaft 11 and a spring '28is used for hold-ing 'the-stud or roller- 29 at' the freeendof said lever n gainst' its con-trolling cam a...
A suitable trainiof gears 3O, 31, 32, 83-93%, 35, 36 drivesth'e endless-tape carrier.7,' the shaft 5 of the cylinder l'b'eing provided'with a gear 37 meshing with the gear 31 to rotate the cylinder. 1
The means for adjusting the position of the free end of the sheet stop shaft operating lever 6 comprises a short arm 38 on said lever and a lug 39 on the socket15, through which lug an adjusting screw 40 passes into engagement with the short arm. 38 of the lever 6. e
In operation; I 5
An outer concentric cross shaft 234s By loosening the set screw 27, either end of the sheet stop rock lever may be adjusted toward and away from the sheet taking device through the worm gear connections 22, 18 or 2%, 19, by turning the handle 25 orhandle 26, bringing the rock shaft into parallelism with the sheet taking device. The set s rew may then be tightened to lock the shaft 23 to the shaft 21 when the turning of either handle will move the rock shaft bodily toward or away from the sheet taking device to bring the sheet stops into proper register therewith.
It will thus be seen that simple, accessible and effective manually operated means is provided at one side of the machine whereby either one or both cross shafts may be rotated to move the end bearings to bring the sheet stop rock shaft into parallelism and to move said rock shaft bodily to bring the sheet stops into proper register.
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence, I do not wish to limit myself to the particular embodiment herein shoWn and described, but
What I claim is 1. A sheet taking device and a sheet feed guide mechanism therefor comprising, a rock shaft, sheet stops carried thereby, and means for adjusting either one or both ends of the shaft to bring the shaft into parallelism and arranged to coact to bring the sheet stops into proper register with the sheet taking device.
2. A sheet taking device and a sheet feed guide mechanism therefor comprising, a rock shaft, sheet stops carried thereby, fixed sockets, end bearings for the rock shaft yieldingly mounted in said sockets, and means for adjusting either one or both ends of the shaft to bring the shaft into parallelism and arranged to coact to bring the sheet stops into proper register with the sheet taking device.
3. A sheet taking device and a sheet feed. guide mechanism therefor comprising, a rock sheet stops into proper register with the sheet taking device, said means comprising concentric manually operated cross shafts having Worm gear connections with their respective end bearings.
41-. A sheet taking device and a sheet feed guide mechanism therefor comprising, a rock shaft, sheet stops carried thereby, fixed sockets, en'd bearings for the rock shaft yieldingly mounted in said sockets, and means for adjusting either one or both ends of the shaft to bring the shaft into parallelism and arranged to coact to bring the sheet stops into proper register with the sheet taking device, said means comprising concentric manually operated cross shafts having worm gear connections with their respective end bearings, and means for looking the shafts to turn together.
A sheet taking device and a sheet feed guide mechanism therefor comprising, a rock shaft, sheet stops carried thereby, and means for adjusting either end of the shaft to bring it into parallelism With the sheet taking device and the sheet stops into proper register with the sheet taking device, said means comprising fixed sockets, end bearings for the shaft mounted in said sockets and provided with shanks, Worm gears screw-threaded on said shanks, and concentric manually operated cross shafts having worms meshing With their respective Worm gears.
6. A sheet taking device and a sheet feed guide mechanism therefor comprising, a rock shaft, sheet stops carried thereby, and means for adjusting either end of the shaft to bring it into parallelism with the sheet taking device and the sheet stops into proper register with the sheet taking device, said means comprising fixed sockets, end bearings for the shaft mounted in said sockets and provided with shanks, Worm gears screw-threaded on said shanks, concentric manually operated cross shafts having Worms meshing with their respective Worm gears, operating handles for said cross shafts at the same side of the machine, and means for looking the two cross shafts to turn together.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invent-ion, I have signed my name this fourteenth day of January A. D. 1924-.
HOWARD M. BARBER.
