H. T. COLDWELL GOLF HOLE CUP FLAG HOLDER, BASE, AND FLAG Filed August 13, 1924 Patented Jan. 5, 1926.
* UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY T. COLDWELL, OF ARLINGTON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOB OF ONE-THIRD T0 WILLIAM H. MARIE AND ONE-THIRD TO -HENRY E. LEX, BOTH OF NEWBURGH,
NEW YORK.
GOLF-HOLE-CUP FLAG HOLDER, BASE, AND FLAG.
Application filed August 13, 1924. Serial No. 731,696.
To all whom it may cance m Be it known that I, HARRY T. COLDWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at 34 Grand Avenue, Arlington, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Golf-Hole-Cup Flag Holder, Base, and Flag; of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a golf hole cup flag holder, base and flag, and the novelty consists in the adaptation and arrangement of parts as will be more fully hereinafter pointed out.
There are many forms of flag holders used in connection with the cups in golf holes but practically all of these embody a construction'which is secured to the cup and most of them require the base of the flag pole to project through an opening in the base of the cup adapted to support the lower end of the flag pole. This causes a constant stirring up of the dirt or mud under the cup and this causes the mud or dirt toget into the cup which is very undesirable. Furthermore the base of such flag poles is usually pointed or is of such construction that it will readily puncture the green ifthe caddy uses the flag pole to lean on or sticks it in the green while waiting for the hole to be played. This causes serious holes or imperfections in the surface of the green which interferes with accurate playing and is the cause of constant irritation.
My device is adapted to overcome these defects, being constructed with a base which is preferably cast and is of substantial weight and so constructed that it will correctly fit the standard cup. This base is fiat and rounded on the edges so that it cannot ossibly harm the green and also the cad y or other person removing the flag while the hole is being played can easily and quickly do this and replace it as the base is adapted to fit the cup so that this can be done. My device has also a complete cup in its base and, therefore, catches practically all water going into the hole which water can be dumped out upon the removal of the base thereby insuring the cup in the hole being dry and clean.
The flag pole of in device can be quickly and readily remove or rigidly secured in position in the flag pole holder of the base and the flag is so constructed that it always hangs in a position to show a triangle from any direction whether the wind is blowing or not thereby overcoming the difiiculty of the usual golf hole flag which does not show clearly unless the wind is blowing and also does not show clearly if the wind is blowing towards the person playing the hole as the flag will also blow ii; that direction and, therefore, not be visi Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device showing the base member in vertical section. Figure 2 is a vertical section of the base member and flag pole holder. Figure 3 is a top plan view of Figure 2. Figure 4 is a detail of the clamp used in conjunction with the flag pole holder and pole.
In the drawings 5 is a base member which is preferably cast so as to be of a substantial weight and a cylindrical tubular member 6 is adapted to be cased therein at 7 so as to be rigidly and securely fastened to the base 5. The tubular member 6 has a cut out portion 8 so that as a flag pole 9 is inserted in the tubular member or flag pole holder 6 a clamp 10 can be rigidly secured in position in the cut out portion 8 by means of a screw and nut 11 so as to rigidly clamp the pole 9 in the holder 6. A conical flag member of fabric 12 having a grommet 13 at its upper end or peak is adapted to' be secured to the pole 9 by means of a screw 14 and said flag 12 has a circular rigid member 15 in its base adapted to keep it in its extended position as shown in the drawing and serving'as a weight to hold it in the position shown in the drawing. The usual number of the particular hole 16 will be shown upon the side of the flag 12 at suitable intervals around the same so that said number can be seen from all directions as the hole is approached by the player.
It is apparent that many variations in construction may be made in this device without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim:
1. In a golf hole cup flag holder the combination of a base member adapted to removabl and snugly fit a golf hole cup and means or supporting and removably mount ber and having a cut out portion near the top adapted to carry a clamp member to detacha-bly secure a flag pole therein.
2. In a golf hole cup flag holder the combination of a base member adapted to remoi ably and snugly fit a golf hole cup and means for supporting and rcmovably mounting a flag pole therein comprising a tubular member rigidly mounted in said base member and having a cut out portion near the top adapted to carry a. clamp memher to detachably secure a flag pole therein and a conical flag ha ing a rigid circular ring in its base, secured to the top of said pole.
8. In a golf hole cup fiagholder the combination of acup shaped base member of substantial weight adapted to removably and snugly fit a golf hole cup and means for supporting and removably mounting a flag pole therein comprising a tubular member cast in said base member and having means for detachably securing a flag pole therein and a conical flag having a rigid circular ring in its base, detachably secured to the top of said pole.
i. In a golf hole cup flag holder the com bination of a cup shaped base member adapted to removably and snugly fit a golf hole cup, means for supporting and removabiy mounting a flag pole therein and a conical flag having a rigid circular ring in its base detachably secured to the top of said pole.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
HARRY T. COLDVVELL.
