To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK M. Ass- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essen, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet Metal Containers, of which the following is a description, reference blllg had to the ac- "companyingdrawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.

The invention relates to new and useful improvements in sheet metal containers, and more particularly to a container which 18 provided with a bail and which may be used for storing and conveying heavy liquids, such aspaint or the like.

An object of the invention is to provide a container of the above type, with a flat sheet metal bail which is so attached to the body portion of the container, that said container can be readily rolled when applying a label thereto.

A further object of the invention is to provide a container of the above type having a flat sheet metal bail which is so attached to the body portion of the. container that the container can be readily rolled when applying the label, with a hollow outwardly projecting bead located just below the ears and the bail when folded down into the plane of thetop of the container, whereby said container can be rolled on said bead while applying the label to the body portion of the container.

The improved container consists of a cylindrical body portion 1 preferably made of tin. Said cylindrical body portion may be made in any suitable way. The lower end of the container body is closed by a bottom 2 which is secured to the body portion Serial No. 750,113.

by the usual double seam 3. This double seam makes a projecting head. The upper end of the container may be partly closed by an ordinary top connected to the body portion of the container by a double scam 1. This top has the usual central opening which may be closed after the container is filled. From certain aspects of the invention, in place of this double seam -11 and the top, the upper edge of the body portion may be rolled into a. bead. A slight distance below the upper edge of the body portion said container body is provided with hollow outwardly projecting bead 5, and the space between the double seam bead 3 and the hollow head 5 may be used for a label. The improved container is especially adapted for heavy liquids, such as paint or the like, and in order that thec'ontainer may be readily carried, there is a bail 6 provided, which bail is preferably made of sheet tin with its side edges folded inwardly on the under side of the bail as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. One of the side edges 7 slightly overlaps the other side edge 8, the side edges meeting substantially on the central line of the bail. These parts are rolled down so that the bail is fiat. The purpose of this folding of the metal to form the bail is to strengthen the bail and provide a con struction wherein there are no sharp edges of metal to injure the hand of the one who is carrying the container. This flat bail has an opening 9 at each end thereof. The bail is semi-circular in form, and the radius of this circle, is substantially the same as the radius of the extreme outer surface of the container body. The bail is secured to the body portion of the container by cars 10. A rivet 11 is passed through a central opening 12 in the ear and through the opening 9, and this rivet is headed as indicated at 13 and 1 1 in Fig. 2. The car at its ends is bent rearwardly so that it may be soldered as at 15, 15 to the side wall of the container body. The bending of the ends of the ear will offset the central portion of the car from the body portion of the container, so that the inner head 13 of the rivet is housed by the ear. The ears are attached to the container body between the beads 4.- and 5.

It will be noted that the bail is attached to the container without in any way perforating the side walls of the body portion of the container. The bail may be turned to a vertical position as shown in Fig. 1, or to :1V horizontal position as indicated at 6 in dotted lines i u said figure.

When it is desired to put a label upon the container body, said container body may be rolled on the beads 3 and in the labelling machine, and the label attached to the container body. The bead or rib 5 aids in strengthening the container body, and this, together with the strengthened bail, through the infolding oi 'the metal, makes avcry strong receptacle and support therefor:

Having thus described'the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is V 1. A sheet metal container including a ing bead formed therein a slight distance below the upper end of the container, a Hat sheet nietal bail which is semi-circular and of substantially the same radius as the outer wall of the container body, said bail having a perforation at each end thereof, an ear having an offset central portion and a perforation therein, corresponding to the perforation at the end of the bail, a headed rivet- -for joining the end of the bail to said offset portion of the ear said ear being soldered to the body port-ion of the container, said bail when folded down into the plane of the top of the container and its supporting ears and rivets being substantially coincldent with the periphery of the bead whereby said container can be rolled when l applying a label thereto.

A container including a *cylindrical body portion having a projecting bead formed therein a slight distance below the upper end of the container, a flat bail formed of sheet metal having its side edges folded inwardly and overlapping at the central part of the bail, said bail being semi-circa lar and of substantially the same radius as the radius of the outer surface of the container body, said bail having a peri o 'ation at each end thereof, an ear having an offset central portion perforated to correspond with the perforation in the end of the bail, cylindrical body portion having a pro ect" a rivet passing through said perforations in the bail and in the ear and headed at each end thereof, the inner head of the rivet being housed by the ear, said ears being soldered to the container body between the projecting bead and the upper edge of the container body, said bail when folded down into the plane of the top of the container and its supporting ears and rivets being substantially coincident with the periphery of the bead whereby said container can be rolled when applying a label thereto.
