UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANNA M. HANNON, OF WABEK, AND WILLIAM LENNON, OF OVEBLY, NORTH DAKOTA.
TABLE.
Application filed January 16, 1924. Serial No. 686,551.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ANNA' M. HANNoN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of \Vabelr, in the county of Mountrail and State of North Dakota, and WILLIAM LENNON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Overly, in the county of Bottineau and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tables and has for its principal object to provide a table which is especially adapted for use as an article of furniture which may be used for various purposes.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a table of the above mentioned character, which is of such a construction,
as to enable the same to be used as a card table or other game table and which is furthermore adapted to be used as a nut table whenever desired.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a table of the class described which is provided with suitable receptacles in the frame thereof and the leg portions being provided with means for supporting nuts when the same is used as a nut table.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a table of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong, durable and further well adapted for the purposes for which it is designated. g
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same 2- Figure 1 is a side elevation of our table with the cover removed.
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view taken on line H of Fig. 2, and
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the cover which is associated with our table.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred em-- bodiment of our invention, the numeral 1 designates generally our table and comprises the leg members 2 which are provided with the casters '3 at their lower ends for the purposes of permitting the table to be moved from place to place whenever desired. Secured to the outer side faces of the leg member 2 and adjacent the upper ends thereof are the sides of the outer frame 4:. An inner frame designated by the numeral 5 in the drawings is secured in any suitable manner to the inner side of the leg members 2 and thereby forming compartments between the sides of the outer frame 4 and the sides of the inner frame 5, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described.
The top faces of the legs 2 are provided with depressed portions designated by the numeral 6 and these depressed portions 6 are adapted to provide suitable means for receiving and supporting nuts which are to be shelled. The sides of the inner frame 5 and the outer frame 4 are adapted to have their bottom edges secured to the strip 7 which provides a bottom for each side of the corresponding inner and outer frames. As seen in Fig. 2 of the drawings, two of the sides of the table 1 are provided with partitions. 8 which extend from the outer frame 4 to the inner frame 5 and these partitions provide means for dividing the particular side of the table into two compartments on each side wherein is adapted to be slidably supported the drawers 9 and 10. The cover plate 1O" is secured between the outer and inner frames 4 and 5, between the leg members 2 over the compartments in which the drawers 9 and 10 are disposed, and this cover plate rests upon the upper edge of the partition 8 between the leg members 2, forming a cover for the draw ers 9 and 10, asmore clearly illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawings. The adjacent sides of the outer and inner frames 4 and 5 respectively provide the pockets or receptacles 11 and are adapted to receive and contain nuts. The drawers 9 and 10 which are slidably mounted in one pair of the sides of the outer and inner frames 4 and 5 are adapted to contain various implements that are used by a person when the table is used as a sewing table. It is to be further understood that the drawers may be also used for any other purposes seen fit.
Secured to the sides of the inner frame 5 at its upper end is the bag-like receptacle 12. It is to be understood that the receptacle 12 may be secured to the inner frame 5 by ryr any suitable fastening means or may be furthermore associated therewith so as to enable the same to be detachably connected thereto. :Thelower. .end 'offh'ebag-l-ike=re1- .its, opposite free end detachably connected to the opposite side of the receptacle by any suitable means such. as a snap fastener or the like as shown at14l in the drawings for theupurposegof permitting the same to be readily 3 opened whenever desired to discharge the contents of the receptacle 12. The receptacle 12 may be used. as ameans for receivingthe shellsrof the, nutsafter the same have been sepaated from the nuts or may .be- .furthern'iore used as aimeans for .holding the yarn or cotton when the, table is used in. sewing.
Onthe outer faces of the outer frame 1 and preferablyupon the side whichforms a nut receiving pocket designated by the numeral 11 in the drawings, suitable receptacles designated by the numeral 15 are provided. These receptacles 15 are adapted to receive andvsupport;playing.cards orvthe like when it isfdesiredto use the table as a playing card table.
hen it is .desired to. use the. table for playingcards or. as a means for supporting dishes for: food,ithe..table:top 16 as more clearlyshown in Fig. l, or the drawings is adapted to be placed overthe .top of the table 2 in such a manner as to. have its anarginal .flange 1?. fitting overthe sidesoffithe outer frame d-andthe underside. of the t0p.16. resting upon thentopfaces, of thelegs Qand the upper edges of the inner and outer frames 5 and #1 respectively; It is tobe. understood thatvthe marginal flange 17 will prevent the table ,top .16 from accidental displacement from thetable and will also provide a suitable ledge whenthe top 16 is moved and turned over so that its marginalfianges 17 will extend, upwardly and the ,top of the table will support the tabletop. 16 and .when in this position the table top.16 is=provided with achecker surface or the like and, is adapted for use' as a checker. ;board,or any other suitable game which uses..various movable .members-ssuch 21S,-d1CC,,.Cl18SS,. or the like.
The mar inalafian 'e 17,- rovidin a means vto prevent the accidental dropping. off: the
game pieces from theboard when the same 1 is innse.
. It will thus be seen from thevforegoing wherein the same may be used for various purposes such as a serving table, a sewing table, or a game board supporting table. The
; simplicity. oft-he several parts; of .oulfl inven- .mentioned character may readily obviate the necessity of having to buy considerable piece of expensive furniture and will also present aneat and attractive appearance however it may be used.
From the foregoing description of the construction of our improved apparatus, it will be seen that wethave provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient meansfor carrying out the objects of theiinvention, and while we have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the, functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, without departingv fromithe spirit. or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A table of the class described, comprising, inne and outer spaced apart rectangular frames, vertical leg members of rectangular designin cross-section having their upper end portions secured between said frames at the corners. thereof, thevupperends of said leg members extending to the horizontal plane of the upper edges, of said frames and the upper faces. of said leg members being depressed -to ,form cups, therein, bottom stripssecnred tothe lower edges of said frames between saidlegs, whereby to provide deep receptacles atthe sides of said table, a hollowinverted conicalmember secured at its upper end to the innerside. faces ofv said ber being cut h orizontally andhingedly secured in pos1t1on tQlJl'OVlClG a removable flap-bottom therefoiysnap.fasteners in connection with said member andsaid hinged bottom to removably secure the latter in position,,and a, rectangular cover applicable to the upper ed es of said frames and .adapted for use as aagametop, as and for theupurposes...described.
In testimony where we :afiix our signatures.
