D. SCHMIDT WATCHCASE CONSTRUCTION Filed July 23, 1925 wnNESSESI l 6 BY J/@M/ ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 22, 1925.
UNITED stares DAVID SCHMIDT. OF NEVI YORK, N. Y.
WATCHCASE CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed July 23, 1925. Serial No. 45,648.
To all whom t may 'conce/Mt.'
Be it known that I, DAVID Fcirrrin'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, United States of America, have invented a new and Improved Watchcase Construction, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the class of jewelry, and more particularly refers to gem settings.
An object of the present invention is the production of an article of jewelry such as a watch case characterized by the use of divers constituents to produce an artistic or harmonious eflect; the arrangement and construction of the constituents being such as to amount to a diversified setting in which the dial of a watch movement may be displayed.
-With the foregoing object. in view the invention resides in the particular provision, construction and functions of the parts here inafter fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a face view of a watch embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the watch case with the watch movement removed.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the watch case with the case sections in an open relationship and showing the interior of the ornamental setting.
The invention in the present application is incorporated in a watch case construction, and the novel features are embodied by one of the casing sections. On reference to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing it will be apparent that the cover section 10 of the watch case C is provided with a mount 11 of ornamental design and upon which gems are set. The said mount 11 is attached in any suitable manner to the sides and ends of the section 10. In order to effect the attachment of an ornamental element to contrast with the mount 11 and the gems carried thereby, and to provide a closure which ts within the sides and ends of the section 10 with a sight opening for the display of the dial, such as the dial 12 of a watch movement, there is provided an ornamental element 13 having an opening 14 therein, and a hollow member 15 which is formed on or otherwise attached to the mount 11 to register with an opening 16 in said mount. The ornamental element 13, in the present instance, is in the nature of an onyx, black in color. The hollow member 15 fits into the opening 14. The inner end of the hollow member 15 is turned over as at 17 by the use of a suitable tool to provide a fiange for holding the element 13 in place. It is to be noted that no other means is provided for holding the element in place beside the flange 17. This is deemed to be a novel construction inasmuch as a sight opening is provided through which the dial of a watch movement arranged in the case section 18 may be made visible.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that a diversified unity is obtained in a watch case construction, that an artistic effect is obtained, and that the diversified unity has utility.
It is to be understood that the invention is not restricted to the precise arrangement of parts shown and described as details of construction may be modified and rearranged without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of which is limited only by the appended claims. For instance, instead of using a single ornamental element two or more ornamental elements may be utilized, and instead of the single flange 17 two or more lugs or prongs may be utilized for holding the plurality of ornamental elements.
I claim:
1. An article of jewelry characterized by the use of an ornamental element surrounded by portions of the article and having an opening therein, a mounting, and means formed about an opening in said mounting extending through the opening in said ornamental element and having a portion which cooperates with other portions of the mounting to hold the ornamental element in place.
2. In an article of the class described, a case section, an ornamental element within the 'case section, a top. mount, said ornamental element having an opening therein, the top mount being attached to said case section, said top mount having an opening therein which coincides with the opening in said ornamental element, and means for supporting the ornamental element from the top mount.
3. In an article of the class described, a case section, a member attached to the case section, and a gem Within the case section beneath said member, an annular portion of said member extending` through an opening in said gem and being flanged'ngainst one face thereofto hold the gem in place.
4. In a Watch ease, a case Section, an ornamental element tting Within said Case section, a top mount arranged over Said `ornamental element and supported by said case section, said ornamental element having ran opening therein, said nop mount having'a'n opening therein which coincides with the opening in. said ornamental element, and means for holdingl Jche ornamental element in pla-ee.
