In said drawings, the main frame of the machine is indicated at 10, the same being of any desired form suitable to accommodate the various other parts of the typewriter. In the typewriter to which I have shown my invention applied, I employ a plurality of radially arranged, reciprocating or trust type bars 11, each of which carries at its inner end a vertically extending type block 12 having a plurality of printing type characters 1311, 13b andl 13c thereon arranged in a vertical series and spaced from each other, the lower characters 13*M preferably being the lower case characters, the intermediate characters 13b being the upper case or capit-alsand the topmost characters 3'3 being numerals and punctuation marks, etc. Each type bar 11 carries a horizontally extending rack 14 at its front or outer end with which is adapted to engage a segmental gear 15 pivoted as'indicated at 16 to a portion of the main frame, the segmental gear being adapted to be oscillated by means of a link 17 attached to a lever arm 18 at one endV and to a key lever 19, the latter being -fulcrumed at its inner end as indicated at 20 to a common fulcrum bar 21. For a. .more detailed description of the type bar action reference may be had to my said prior Patent 1,305,893 and for the details of the type block reference may be had to my pending application, Serial No. 420,892, filed November 1, 1920. The type blocks are a-dapted to slide upon a table 22 in reciprocating to and from printing position, being suitably centered at the extreme inner end of their movementnby a guide 23. As is customary, I provide a universal bar 24 pivotally mounted on the main frame of the machine A spacer key of' lever type is indicated at 26, the same being fulcrumed,asindicated at 2? to a suitable bracket carried bythe main frame ofl the 1,5ee,sso
machine, a spring 28 reacting against the spacer'key to normally influence it toward the position indicated best in Figure 2.
In the type of machine which I have illustrated, the platen is adapted for vertical movement or case shifting relative to the type bars, the platen being indicated at 29. Said platen is rotatably mounted in any suitable manner on a platen carriage 30 which is adapted for reciprocating or longitudinal movement transversely of the machine by means of rails 31-31 forming a part of said carriage and cooperating rails 32-32 rigidly carried by a carriage support 33, there. being a plurality of anti-friction balls 34 interposed between the sets of tracks 31-32 to reduce friction. As will be understood by those skilled in the art, a suitable'escapement mechanism is employed to effect the step byl step movement of the platen transversely of the machine, such escapement mechanism not being shown as the same is deemed unnecessary for an understanding of my invention. The carriage 30 and'carriage support 33 together constitute what may be termed the combined platen carriage support and carriage, and said combined carriage support and carriage, as an entirety, is vertically movable or shiftable relative to the main frame of the machine. To provide ,for this movement, the carriage support is provided with vertically eXtending enlargements 35--35 near each end thereof, the same being vertically axially recessed soas to telescope on a corresponding pair of upstanding posts 36-36 carried by the main frame of the machine. In addition to the vertical case shift movement provided for, the combined platen support and carriage is readily'bodily verticallyV removable from the main frame of the machine. Although I have not herein shown any case shifting means, as the same are not deemed essenti'al to an understanding of the present invention, a satisfactory form of such means permitting of the case shift and removable features above enumerated, is disclosed in my pending application 360,958, filed Febrv 24, 1920, to which reference may be had.
Referring now more particularly to the ribbon vibrator and guide, I have shown a multi-color inking ribbon 37 having an upper portion 37a of one color and'a lower portion 37b of another color. Said ribbon exbtends crosswise of the machinevin a well by any suitable means, not shown. The ribt' bon guide proper and vibrator is best shown in Figure 3, where it will be seen thatI employ two vertically elongated loops 39 39, each having an Opening aO-LO topermit the msertion'and remove] of the ribbon and,
after it is once inserted, the ribbon Will be held Vertical and unwrinkled, as shown in Figures V2, 4 and 5. 1 In order to adjust the inking ribbon to employV a different color section thereof, as for instance the lower color section 371), the bell crank 79 is adapted to be manually set or adjusted by means of a rod 82 pivotally connected to the arm 7 9b of the bell crank as indicated at 88. Said rod 82 is slidably supported at its lefthand end as viewed in Figure 6 on the carriage support 83 by means of a stud 84 extending thru a slot 85 in said rod. Case shifts of the platen carriage will maintain the relations of the ribbon and platen even with the bell crank 79 shifted to dotted position, `as will be understood.
-From the preceding, it will be seen that the ribbon vibrator guide rises and falls in accordance with the nlaten and that the particular color section of the ribbon desired may be determined by setting the bell crank 79. VVhen one of the keys or spacer is actuated, the universal bar 24 will be depressed in a wellknown manner, thereby depressing the arm 67:t see VF igure 3) ofV the bell crank 67 and thru the intermediary of the yoke lever 61-62, will vibrate or elevate the ribbon guide to inking position. lSimultaneous with the Operation of the universal bar and the bell crank 67 the escapement mechanism will also be operated as previously described,.

Due to the alinement of the pivot pins 56 and 65, heretofore mentioned, which'will always obtain regardless of the case po-sition of the carriage or the color section of ribbon being employed, the throw or oscillation of the yoke lever 61-62 will remain the same so that the various adjustments and conditions provided for in the ribbon vibrator do not afect the throw or movement of the ribbon itself, a very important consideration in this type of mechanism.
Due to the unavoidable variations which may occur in the manufacture of the various parts and assembly thereof, certain adjustments may be necessary and particularly is this true. with respect to the usual escapement mechanism. Inasmuch as my improved ribbon vibrator and the escapement mechanism are actuated from a common member, the universal bar 24, adjustment to take care of variations in the escapement mechanism might effect the throw of the ribbon vibrator guide unless special means are provided to permit independent comp'ensation with respect to the vibrating mechanism. To this end, each of. the keys 19 and spacer lever 26 may be formed with a slotted enlargement as indicated at 26a in Figure 2, where engagement is obtained with the universal bar. This permits the lower engaging edge of the key lever or spacer lever to be readily adjusted by either squeezing with a pair of pliers or by spreading with a screw driver o-r the like, inserted thru the slot.
In Figure 8, I have shown a different methodV of compensating for the variations and adjustments mentioned in the preceding paragraph which provides for a quioker adjustment than in the case of the Structure illustrated -in Figure 2 although' the latter may Vhave a slight advantagel in the; cost of manufaoture. In a typewriter having a main frame, a platen, type bars provided With a plurality of spaced printing type characters thereon, means for effecting a case shift movement of the platen, and a multi-color inking ribbon: the combination with a ribbon vibrator; of a vibrator lever; a support pivoted to-the main frame and to which the vibrator lever is pivoted, said support being automatically positioned in accordance With the case shift position of the platen; an operating lever'pivotally connected to the vibrator lever substantially in'alinement With the pivotal aXis of saidsupport whereby the normal relative positions of the vibrator and platen remain substantially constant in all case shift positions of the platen; means for actuating said Operating lever; and manually set means for varying the normal position of the vibrator to present different portions thereof for printing.
5. In a typewriter having a main frame, a platen, type bars provided with a plurality of spaced printing type characters thereon, means for eifecting a case shift movement'of the platen, and a multi-color inking ribbon; the combination with a ribbon vibrator; of a vibrator lever; a support pivoted to the main frame and to which the vibrator leveris pivoted, said support being automatically positioned in accordance with the case'shift position of the platen; an Operating lever pivotally connected to the vibrator lever substantially in alinement With the pivotal axis of said support Whereby the normal relative positions of, the vibrator and platen remain substantially constant in all case shift positions of the platen; means for actuatingsaid Operating lever;

In a t-ypewriter having a main frame., a platen, means for efecting a case shift thereof, an inking ribbon, and a universal bar; the combination with a plurality of type bars having a plurality of type characters thereon; of key levers for actuating said type bars and' adapted to cooperate with said universal bar; a ribbon vibrator normally positioned in an inoperative position said vibrator being -shiftable to tWo operating positions for each case-printing position thereof; means automatically operable from said universal bar for elevating said ribbon vibrator to operative position'upon actuation of a' type bar; and mechanism Cooperable With said means for shifting the operating position of said vibrator to said two different positions for each case-printing position thereof and maintaining Constant the normal inoperative and operative position thereof in accordance With each case printing position' of theplaten, said mechanisin including a lever directly supported by the main frame and aii adjustable abutinent means coacting with the lever.
7. Ina typewriter, the combination With a` main frame; of a platen, platen carriage and carriage support movably mounted on said main frame and adjustable to different case printing positions; a universal bar; a ribbon vibrator supported from the main frame independently of-theplaten carriage and support; ineans for vibrating said vibrator upon actuation of the universal bar and providing a similar Operation of the vibrator independent of the case position of the platen; and an adjustable stop cooperable with said last named means to determine the normal inoperative position of said vibrator, the position of said stop varying in accordance with the case position assumed by the platen.
8. In a typewriter having a main frame1 a platen, a platen carriage, a carriage support, type bars provided With a plurality of spaced printing type characters thereon, and means for effecting a case shift movement of the platen, the combination with a ribbon vibrator; of a vibrator lever; a movable support mounted oii the main frame and to which said lever is pivoted; means for automatically moving said support to different positions in accordance with the case shift position of the platen; an'operating lever pivoted to the main frame and pivotally connected With the vibrator lever:

A ribbon vibrator for a typewriter having a main frame, said vibrator including: a fulcrum lever pivotally mounted about a fixed pivot at one end; a tension spring extending between said fulerum lever and the main frame; a vertically movable ribbon vibrator; a second lev-er pivotally mounted adjacent the free end of said fulcrum lever, said second named lever having operative engagement with the ribbon guide and adapted to impart vertical movement to the latter; a third lever pivotally supported from a fixed portion of the frame and adapted to be oscillated upon actuation of the usual universal bar, said third lever having pivotal connection withthe second named lever substantially in alinement With the fiXed pivot of the fulcrum lever; and a stop shoulder carried by said fulcrum leverv and rigid therewith, the position of said shoulder and fulcrum lever being adapted to be determined by the easeprinting position of the typewriter plate'n.

A ribbon vibrator attachment adapted to be attached to the main frame of a typewriter, said attachment comprising: a braeket adapted to be'secured to a. rigid part of the typewriter frame, said bracket carrying a relatively fixed pivot; a vibrator guide adapted to be secured to another part of the typewriter frame; a vibrator vertically slidablyv mounted in said vibrator guide; a fulcrum lever pivotally mounted at one end on said fixed pivot; a stop shoulder rigid With respect to said fulcrum lever and the position of which is adapted to be determined by a cooperating member carried by the platen carriage support; and a lever pivotally .monnted intermediate its ends adjacent the free end of said fulcrnm lever, said second named lever having operative engagement with the ribbon vibrator to effect vertical movements of thev latter, the opposite end of said second named lever being adapted part of the main frame and operativelyl connected at one end to the universal bar land at its other end to a link adapted to ac-tuate an escapement mechanism; of a combined ribbon guide and vibrator proper, adjustable to different Operating positions to bring different zones of the ribbon in cooperative relation to the type of the bars; means for imparting vibratory movement to said vibrator proper in its different Operating positions and operable from said first named lever; means for determining the normal inoperative position of Vsaid last named means in accordance with the caseprintingv position of the platen; and adjustment means determinative ofthe different Operating postions'of said vibrator guide andalso determinative of the normal position of the actuating means for each operative position of the vibrator guide with respect'to the universal bar independently of therelation between the said escapement link actuator and the universal bar.`
