L. COATALEN ROCKER MECHANISM Filed March 11, 1925 INVENTOR v 1 i 2411 55- QC. MW 54%;
Patented Dec. 22, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS COATALEN, 0F WOLVERHAMPTON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO SUNBEAM MOTOR GAR COMPANY LIMITED, 0]? WOLVERHAMPTON, ENGLAND, A BRITISH COMPANY.
ROCKER MECHANISM.
Application filed March 11, 1925.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs COATALEN, a subject of the King of England, residing at Wolverhampton, in the county of Stafford, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rocker Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rocker mechanism, and particularly that employed for operating the valves of fluid pressure engines, in which there is interposed between the operating cam and the valve a rocker, and some adjustment is provided whereby the clearance in the mechanism can be delicately varied. In some cases the rocker is provided with an eccentric pivot, and by rotation of the pivot the clearance is varied. The invention relates to mechanism embodying a rocker mounting of this kind, and-it has for its object to provide a very simple construction easily applicable to existing engines.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a side view of the rocker of an engine valve, which is mounted in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a horizontal section of the same, in which for clearness one part has been rotated through 90 degrees.
Like letters indicate like parts throughout the drawings.
In the construction illustrated, the rocker A is mounted upon a bush B of bronze or other material which in turn is carried upon a fixed shaft or spindle C, and the outer periphery of the bush is eccentric to the shaft C so that rotation of the bush B raises and lowers the rocker, thereby varying the clearance in the well-known manner. The
Serial No. 14,673.
bush is extended at B beyond the boss A of the rocker on one or both sides, and this extension is enlarged in diameter and is split radially at B preferably at one point. Each side of the splits is formed with a lug, and through the two lugs passes tangentially a clamping bolt D, the arrangement being such that when the bolt is tightened up the split portion grips tightly on to the shaft C and the bush portion cannot accidentally rotate. To effect an adjustment the clamping bolt D is slacked off and the eccentric bush B moved angularly around the shaft C in the desired direction, after which the clamping bolt is tightened up again.
The invention is very easily applicable to existing engines as it is common practice to pivot the rockers through bushes upon a shaft such as C common to a number of the rockers. In applying the present invention it is merely necessary to substitute for the existing simple and concentric bushes, others of the kind above described.
hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is A rocker mechanism assembly comprising a fixed shaft, an eccentric bushing carried thereby, said bushing having a longitudinal extension carrying radial ears extending up .ward on opposite sides of said fixed shaft,
means to draw said ears toward each other, a peripheral flange on said bushing, a rocker arm mounted on said bushing and having a portion abutting said flanges.
In testimony whereof I have signed. my name to this'specification.
LOUIS COATALEN.
