VISIBLE DISPENSING DEVICE.-
Application filed July 28, 1924. Serial No. 728,632.

Be it known that I, JERALD G. Do'rY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri7 have invented a new and useful Visible Dispensing Device, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to visible dispensing devices.
v The invention is specially designed and adapted for use as a visible dispensing device for gasoline at filling stations, etc., though the usefulness `of the invention is not limited as it may be advantageously applied to other uses. y
An object of the invention is toprovide an improved visible dispensing device including a receptacle connectedwith a supply line through which gasoline or the like is admitted to the receptacle, and provided with a quickclosing valve within the receptacle and operated by a float device controlled by the gasoline when the gasoline reaches a predetermined height in the receptacle.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device embodying the subject matter mentioned in which the valve opens automatically and as an incident to the withi drawal of the gasoline from the receptacle.
Other objects will appear from the following description, reference being made to the drawing in which- Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved visible dispensing device. i

The receptacle comprises a transparent glass tube l, an upper end wall 2, a lower end wall 3 and a tie rod in the form of atube 4 extending axially through the tube 1 and securing the end walls against the ends of said tube. The lower end wall 3 has an outlet opening 5 for connection with a delivery hose that conducts the gasoline to the point of delivery. The upper end wall 2 has a 'vent 6 through which Ithe air passes from the receptacle as the gasoline enters.
The supply line forkdelivering gasoline or other liquid into the receptacle comprises a pipe 7 extending upwardly through the ower end wall 3 and having its upper end terminating some distance below the top of the receptacle. To the upper end of the pipe 7 a tubular iitting 8 is attached,ithe same being provided with a cross web 9. A valve seat member 10 is secured to the fitting 8 and has a valve seat 11 around the discharge opening thereof. The tube 12 encloses the pipe 7 and ormsan annular space around said pipe opening near the bottom of the ieceptacle. The upper end of the tube 12 comprises an enlarged portion 13 to receive the valve mechanism includiiigthe parts 8 and 10. An end wall 14 is secured within the upper end of the enlarged portion 13 at a distance from the end of the valve seat inember 10 so that the gasoline or other fluid entering the receptacle from the pipe 7 may pass between said parts and through the tube 12 to lill the receptacle to the proper height.
A valve stem 15 extends for sliding movements through holes in the cross web 9 and the end wall 14 and has an elastic valve 16 attached thereto within the valve seat member 10 and above the fitting 8. The stem 15 has a hole 17 through which a lever member 18 extends. The lever member 18 is pivoted to a support 19 on the end wall 14. and on its upper edge has a rounded shoulder 20 witliin the hole 17. The shoulder 20 operates against a roller 2l supported above the lever member 18 and in the hole 17 by a pin 22. A lever 23 has one end pivoted tothe support 19. The free end of the lever member 18 supports a pin 24 and a similar pin 25 is supported by the lever 23. The pins 24 and 25 are connected by coil springs 26,

Extent of movement of the lever 23 is limited by an abutment device comprising an arm 3-1 adjustably secured to the part 13 by screws 35 passing through a slot 36 in said arm. The arm 34 is formed with a notch 37 in which the lever 23 operates, the upper and lower ends of said notch constituting abutments to limit extent oil movement of said lever.
A lubricating device 38 may be provided Vin connection with the upper' end wall 2 of the receptacle to conduct lubricant to the pivot oi' the levers 18 and 23. A portion of the lubricant will naturally pass along the lever 18 to the connection of said lever with the stem l5. Flow of liquid through the supply line into the receptacle is expedited by provision ot a vent 39 in the wall 1li.
Then gasoline or other liquid is admitted into the receptacle 1 the float 28 will be raised thereby until the lever 23 passes dead center position with respect to the lever 18. When this occurs the springs 26 will raise the free end of the lever 18, thereby moving the valve 16 to closed position against the valve seat 11 and stopping flow of gasoline or other liquid into the receptacle. This operation occurs quickly and at the moment the liquid reaches the predetermined height in the receptacle. When the valve is closed operation of the pump, forcing the liquid through the supply line 7, is necessarily stopped so 'that when the liquid is withdrawn from the receptacle 1 the weight of the loat 28 and connecting parts will actuate the lever 23 downwardly beyond dead center position with respect to the lever 18, whereupon the springs 26 act quickly to open the valve 16. The pump may be then again operated to lill the receptacle. The operation of the valve to open and closed positions occurs quickly and automatically and as an incident to the other operations described.

A visible dispensing device comprising a receptacle, a pipe opening into the receptacle, a tube enclosing the discharge end oi' said pipe within the receptacle, a valve chamber in connection with said pipe having an opening therethrough to said tube, a valve within said chamber movable to open position in a direction toward the end of said pipe and to closed position in a direction away from the end of said pipe, a stem in connection with the valve extending through said opening and through the end ot said tube, a pair of levers having their adjacent ends pivoted upon said tube, a connection between one of said levers and said stem, a float in connection with the outer end oi the other lever, and a spring connecting said levers on opposite sides of their pivot.

A visible dispensing device comprising a receptacle, a pipe for conducting liquid into the receptacle, a tube enclosing the discharge end of said pipe Within the receptacle, a valve chamber supported by said pipe within said tube and having an opening beyond the end of said pipe for admitting liquid into said tube, a valve in said chamber movable to open position toward the end of said pipe and to closed position in a direction away from the end of said pipe, a stem from said valve extending through said opening and through the end of said tube, a pair of levers having their adjacent ends pivoted upon said tube, a connection between one of said levers and said valve stem, a spring connecting said two levers on opposite sides of their pivot, a float within said chamber, and a sliding connection between said float and the outer end of one of said levers.
