Description

Patented Dec. 15, 1925.
UNITED TATES JOHN R. HARVEL, or MUSVKOGEE, OKLAHOMA.
BROOM HOLDER.
Application filed March 31, 1925. Serial No. 19,656.
To all whom it may camera.
Be it known that I, JOHN R. HARVEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muskogee, in the county of Muskogee and State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and useful Broom Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a broom or mop holder and the object thereof is to provide a device of this character which will securely clamp the straws or other fillers to a handle and which permits the renewal of said fillers when desired.
Another object is to provide a holder of this character which is very cheap to construct and easily operated to clamp and release the head fillin and which will securely connect the llers to the broom handle.
Another object is to provide simple and efficient means for securely locking the clamps together which hold the broom straws or fillers.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a broom constructed in accordance with this invention, the handle being broken off for convenience in illustration;
Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section; and
Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal section showing one of the cross ties or clamp connectors. I
In the embodiment illustrated a broom head 1 is shown secured to a handle 2, by the holder constituting this invention, and which comprises a pair of clamps 3 and 4 designed to be arranged on opposite faces of the broom head for clamping the straws or filler between them.
These clamps or jaws 3 and 4 are constructed exactly alike and are each composed of heavy wire bent into substantially triangular form with one corner extended to form a yoke 5 which is designed to be mounted in grooves in the opposed faces of the handle 2 and securely held by wire 7 which is wrapped therearound as is shown clearly in Fig. 2.
The end of the handle 2 which extends into the head of the broom is made flat as shown at 2 and is designed to be disposed in the center of the broom head and covered by the straw or other fillers.
Located under the jaws 3 and 4 between them and the broom straws of the head are metal plates 8 and 9, the lower ends of which are provided with outturned upwardly curved lips 10 which form seats to receive the lower cross bars of the clamping jaws while their upper ends taper and extend under the loop formed by the wire wrapping 7. These upper ends of the plate shown at 11 in Fig. 2 are also located in mortised recesses formed in the broom handle 2 and are securely held by the gripping action of the jaws.
The jaws 3 and 4 which are located on opposite faces of the broom head are locked together by cross ties 12 which are here shown in the form of a clincher link of metal having an eye 13 at one end and a hook 14 at the other, the eye being engaged with one of the upstanding members ofthe jaw and the hook 14 with a similar member of the other jaw. These cross ties 12 span the edges of the broom head and securely hold the jaws in clamped engagement thereby securely connecting the head with the handle.
Thus it will be seen that due to this construction, the members 12 may be moved over the members 3 and 4 to draw the members 3 and 4 towards each other and into clamping relation with the elements associated therewith.
A band or wire 15 may be inserted around the broom head to hold the straws in place if found desirable to do so.
In the use of this invention the handle with the holder mounted thereon is designed to be sold as an article of manufacture and may be applied to broom heads of different kinds so that when one head becomes worn it may be taken out and replaced by another and this replacement is effected by the purchaser and is not done at the factory.
I claim In a broom holder, a handle, spring clamping jaws securely arranged on opposite sides of the handle and normally extending in diverging relation, said jaws being formed of wire material and extending outwardly beyond the handle, cross ties slidably connected to the jaws, said cross ties being adapted to be moved towards the outer ends of the jaws to cause the jaws to move inwardly, and plates positioned under the jaws and secured to the handle and adapted to engage the side faces of a broom head inserted between the jaws.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing 1 as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature.
JOHN R. HARVEL.
