Description

Dec. 15, 1925- 1,565,588 C. F. PORTER HAIR DRESSING DEVICE Filed March 22, 1921 anoentoz Patented Dec. 15, 1925.
UNITED, STATES.
; 1,565,588 TENT OFFICE- CHARLES r. PORTER, or NEW YORK, 11. 1:; SARAH HARRIETT PORTER, EXECUTRIX OF SAID CHARLES F. PORTER, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. I
Application ine'af March '22 1321.
To (all whom, it may concern: g
Be it known that I, CHARLES? F. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resi dent of New York city, in the county ofNew York and State of New York, have invented.
in the desired arrangement or by the appli cation of heat.-
Heretofore, a wave or curl has been im'' parted to a strand of hair by wrapping it upon a base member and holding it thereon by means of an elastic band, butsuch elastic banas deteriorate, break under. the"ten'-' sion required and become entangled in'the hair. so has a harmful effect on the gray hair.
It is an object of my invention to provide a device for waving or curling a strand of hair which is simple and durable and will not become entangled in the hair or exert a harmful effect thereupon and which will not deteriorate.
Another object of my invention is to provide means for waving or curling a strand of hair which will firmly clasp and retain the strand in the desired and necessary arrangement and which will be simple but effective in its application and removal.
Other and further objects and advantages of my invention appear from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and will be pointed outin the hereunto appended claims.
In the drawings in which like'reference characters refer to similar parts:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the device embodying my invention showing one manner of wrapping a strand of hair thereupon;
Figs. 2, 3 and 4: are detailed views.
In the drawings which illustrate one form of my invention for the purpose of disclos- The rubber of such elastic bands 'al DECEASED ASSIGNOR TO'SARAH H. CRAWFORD, OF
' HliIRDRnssING DE ICE.
serial "no. 454,362
ing thesame, a waving member 1 shown in detail i'n' Flgs. 2 and 3 is adapted to have wrapped upon 1t a strand of hair 6 for 11nparting thereto the desired curl or Wave; To make a uniform wave the member 1 should be uniform throughout its'vlength and of a circular, elipticahoval or other rounded cross section, 1t being substantially a length of a rod having such a shape. The
hair may be wrapped in anywell known manner to secure the desired effect, the man-' ner of wrapping the hair forming no part of my invention. An embracing or retaining member2 isprovided for firmly holding the hair wrapped upon the} base mane ber 1'. The embracing member 2 'is con nected to the base niember l so as to be readily detachable therefrom. The embracing member 2 is resilient and preferably includes .a curved portion, the resiliency operating to draw the ends towards each other- The, means whereby the embracing member and the base member are connected is rendered effective by the resiliency of the embracingv member 2. In theembodiment of my invention herein described the connecting means comprises a slot 3* in the end'of the base member 1 through which the embracin member 2 'or an off-set portiont thereof extends. The embracing member provided preferably at its ends with retaining portions so that the portions of the embracing member which extend through the slots and are held therein by the resiliency of an embracing member will be retained within the slots against the pressure existing between the strand of hair 6 and the embracing member 2. When the resilient retaining member 2 is a small wire, as shown in the drawings, the sharp ends unprotected would be injurious to the wearer. Thus the portions 5 perform a double function. The resiliency of the embracing member 2 permits the off-set portions l to be spread apart so that there may be readily positioned within and removed from the slots 3 and this resilience also exerts pressure on the strand of hair 6 so as to hold it in place and impart to it the desired wave or curl.
It will be apparent from the above description that a hair dressing device embodying my invention is simple, durable, eflective and readily operative.
IVhile I have described and shown specific details of the construction of any invention, it is to be understood that I am not limited thereto but that my invention is described by the hereunto appended I claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the class described, a member adapted to have a strand of hair wrapped upon it andhaving notches in .its ends, and normally curved a resilient hair embracing member extending through a notch in each end of said first named member and having retaining parts at its ends, said embracing member being held in said notches by its resilience.
2. In a device .of the class described, a member adapted to have ,a strand of hair wrapped upon it and having notches in its ends, and ,a resilient hair embracing part having a curve therein and extending through said notches in the ends of said first member and provided at its .ends with retaining parts.
3. In a hair waver a member adapted .to have a strand of hair wrapped upon it and having'notches across its ends, and ahair retaining member of resilient metal and comprising a normally curved hair engaging portion and integral end "portions substantially at right angles to said hail-engaging portions and adapted to fit in said notches and to be held therein by the resilience of said hair engaging portion, said .end portions having retaining parts at their extremities to prevent them from slidingthrough said notches.
4:. In a device of the class described, a member adapted to have a strand of hair wrapped upon it and having notches in its ends, and a resilient hair retaining member extending -;through and beyond a notch in each end of said first named member and having retaining parts on its ends.
5. Ahair waver having, in combination, a hair waving member and a hair retaining element, the waving member having the form of a rod of rounded cross section and having transverse notches in the ends thereof, the retaining element being a length having resilient material therein, said length having its major portion spanning substantially ,the length of the waving member, and having its ends pass substantially at right angles to the major portion through and beyond the notches, wherein they are held by the resiliency of the retaining element and enlargements on said ends to retain said ends in the notches.
.6. A hair waver having, in combination, a waving member and a hair retaining element, the waving member having the form of a rod of rounded cross section and having an end with a transverse notch therein, the retaining element being a length having resilient material therein and having its major portion adapted to span substantially the length of the waving member, said element having one end substantially at right angles to the major portion, said end being adapted to pass through and beyond the notch where-- in it is held by the resiliency of the'element, an enlargement on said end beyond the notch and means to hold the opposite end of the element resiliently to the corresponding end of the waving member.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
CHARLES F. PORTER.
Certificate of Correction.
It is hereby certified that the assignee in Letters Patent No. 1,565,588, granted December 15, 1925, upon the application of Charles F .-Porter, of New York, N. Y. (Saran Harriett Porter executrix of said Charles F. Porter, deceased), for an improvement in Hairdressing Devices, was erroneously described and specified as Sarah H. Crawford Whereas said assi nee should have been described and s ecified as Sarah H. Porter, as shown by the records of assignments in this office; page 2, line 73, claim 6, after the Word notch insert a comma; and that the said Letters Patent should be read With these corrections therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Office.
