Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. ZEIDLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates -to improvements in ironing machines and the like, and has for its primary object to provide a simplel and effective means for applying pressure to the feed rolls during the ironing operation, and for quickly releasing and raising them from the work; the same means being adapted to lock said rolls in position during the operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved means of mounting and heating a mangle roll. A further object is to provide novel means to supply heated air from the interior of the roll to the burner. A still further obj ect is to give an improvement in relation to the feed table, heated roll, and padded drums, whereby finely iinished work will be quickly produced.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the structure, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully set forth in the accompanying specification and drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a machine embodying my invent-ion,

In the embodiment of my invention, herein illustrated, 1-1 represent legs located at each end of the machine, and la, 1a, represent cross bars, upon which is journalled a rotary shoe or drum 2. closely approaching but not touching the drum 2. The drum is a hollow cylinder having spiders 2a at the ends fixed upon a foraminate hollow shaft A which serves as a combined journal and burner. The shaft projects beyond the drum at each end and is there supported upon roller bearings ta moving in a suitable raceway 4b, on bars 1a of the frame. rlhe foramens of the shaft are within the drum only. 'I'he shaft is open at the left end, and the raceway there is closed at the outer side by a cap plate 5 spaced from the end of the shaft suitably to admit air entering through the bearing. In the cap plate a nozzle 6 is provided arranged to direct gas axially into the shaft. A fuel conduit (ifL leads to the nozzle. The jet from the nozzle serves to draw air into the burner through the bearing, keeping the latter cool, and forming a properly com* bustible mixture.
Pivotally mounted upon brackets 7 7 located, one upon each side of the top of the machine at the rear, are jointed arms, each of which comprises two links, 8 and 9, respectively. rIlwo cloth covered rolls, 10 and 11, respectively, are journaled between these arms, the centrally disposed shaft 10a of the roller 10 pivotally connecting the ends of the links 8 and 9, while the shaft 11El of the roller 11 is journaled between the free ends of the links 9 9 at either side of the machine.
Rotatably mounted upon a stud 7a, of the bracket .7 at the left side of the machine, there is a worm gear 12 meshing with a worm 13, mounted upon a shaft 14, which is journaled within the member 15 as shown. A grooved pulley 16 is mounted upon the outer end of the shaft 14C, and is connected by a belt 17 to the pulley 18a of an electric motor 18. A drive wheel 19 here shown as of the sprocket type is centrally mountedupon the face of the worm gear 12, and is connected by a chain 20 to a larger sprocket wheel 21 mounted upon the left end of the shaft 112L of the roller 11. Upon the right ends of the shafts 1()a and 11*1 of the rollers 10 and 11, are mounted sprocket wheels 22 and 23 respectively, which are connected with a sprocket chain as shown. It follows that the motor driving pulley 16 will impart motion to the roller 11 through the sprocket chain 20, and thence to the roller 10 throu h the sprocket chain 24 connecting t e sprocket wheels 22 and 23.
It will be seen that the compound arms carrying the rolls l() and ll, may be flexed due to the pivotall connected links 8 and 9, and in orde-r to limit this movement, each lilik 8 is formed with a squared projection 8TL at the head, while the links 9 are formed with a lugor stop 9y upon the inner side as shown in Figure The projection 8 and the lugl tifL are in close proximity, so that the upward movein .at of the link 9 relative to the link 8 is limited.
A longitudinal s iaft 25, journaled within the lower cross braces lf2-l. at each side of the machine7 carries permanently aiiixed crank arms .2G- 267 at each end, and each of these arms is provided with a pivotally mounted wrist member 2G7 through which a rod 27 freely passes. The rods 27 are pivotally connected at their upper enc-rs with the links 9 9a at a point midway between the rolls l0 and lll, and their lower ends, beyond the member 26, are each provided with a nut 2TLL and a jam-nut 27". l coiled spring 28 is disposed upon the rod 27 between the nut 2'?" and the member 25a, forming' a yielding means for transmitting pressure from the wrist to the rod. A nut 2T is located upon the rod 273 above the wrist by which a positive lift is provided. Lugs lb formed integral with the cross braces laa on each side of the machine serve as stops for the crank arms after they pass the lower read center iirlowering movement, lowering the rolls l0 and ll. Due to the spring 28 they become ),f'ieldingly locking on the ironing bed.

l. ln a domestic ironing machine, a frame,
'naled therein, a pair of links pivoted to opposite ends of said frame, a second link articulated to the end of each of said first links, a pair of parallel horizontal rolls journaled in said links and located above the drum, means for driving said rolls, and operating rods pivotally attached to said links at a point between said rolls whereby said rolls may be raised and lowered.
3. In an ironing machine, a frame, ahorizontal, cylindrical heated drum mounted thereon, a horizontal feed shelf at one side of said drum. a pair of arms pivoted to thc frame at the opposite side of said drum, other armsv pivoted to the ends of said first arms, a pair of parallel horizontal rolls pivoted between the respective ends of said last arms, said rolls being of smaller diameter than said drum and located above the same and the top of said shelf being substantially level with the line of contact between the nearest roll and drum, and means for raising and lowering said last arms, and means operative after said arms are lowered for increasing the downward force thereon.
4. In a domestic ironing machine, a frame, a horizontal cylindrical heated drum jonrnaled therein, a pair of links pivoted one at each en'd of said frame at a point above and at one side of said drum, a second link pivoted to the free end of each of said first links, a pair of parallel horizontal rolls of smaller diameter than said drums and located above the same, the ends of said rolls being journaled in said last mentioned links, means for driving both of said rolls in the same direction, operating rods articulated to said last named links at a point between said rolls, and means for raising and lowering said rods so as either to elevate said rolls away from sai'd drum or to draw them against the drum with. a force which is divided between said rolls.
5. In a domestic ironing machine, aframe a horizontal cylindrical heated drum journaled therein, a, padded roll fabove said drum, a plurality of pedals, means interconnecting said roll and pedals adapted for raising the roll upon a ldownward movement of one of the pedals and for permitting a downward movement of the roll upon an upward 'movement of the pedal, said means comprising mechanism for increasing the pressure upon the roll upon a downward movement of another of the pedals.
6. In a domestic ironing machine, a frame, a horizontal cylindrical heated drum jonrnale'd therein, a drive wheel journaled to said frame with its axis parallel to said drum, a pair of links pivoted one to each cnd of said frame co-aXial with said drive wheel, other links pivoted to said first links, a pair of parallel horizontal rolls journaled to said last links, driving connections between one of said rolls and said drive wheel, other driving connections between said rolls and means for raising and lowering said links.
7 .1 In a domestic ironing machine, a frame, a horizontal cylindrical heated drum liournaled thereto, la drive wheel journaled to said frame upon an axis parallel to said drum, a pair of links pivoted one to each end of said frame co-aXial with said drive wheel, other links pivoted to said first links, ironing rolls journaled to said last links and co-operating with said drum, operating rods connected to `said last links between said rolls to raise and lower the same, means connecting said drive wheel to said rolls in driving relation, a worm gear for operating said drive wheel and an electric motor carried by said frame operatively connected to said worm gear.
8. In an ironing machine, in combination, a frame, a heated member, and an ironing roll co-operating with said heated member, a rock shaft j-onrnaled in Said frame beneath said heated member and having an arm at each end, an eye pivoted to the free end of each arm, an operating rod sleeved in each of said eyes and having its upper end operatively connected to sai-d ironing roll, a pair of spaced stops on said rod, one above and one below said eye, a compression spring interposed between said eye and the lower stop, and means to rotate said rock shaft in both directions and to hold it at different set positions.
