Be it known that-I, G-nonen T. Pnimsons, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough ot Manhattan, in the city, county, and State ot .New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fire Ih;- tinguishcrs, ot which the following is a specification- This invention relates to tire extinguishers ot the syringe type in which a lire est-inguishing liquid is` discharged from a reservoir by a pumping mechanism upon each inward and outward movement ot' a reciprd cable piston, and it is ythe object of the invention to Vimprove the general construction oil extinguishers of this type to increase the e'liiciency thereof. l
It is a Jurther object of the invention io provide a pumping mehanisin having` a pisA ton chamber with suction inlets to opposit ends thereof connected with the reservoir and outlets from opposite ends connected to a discharge outlet to the exterior ot the reservoir, a valve being operable to connect the discharge outlet alternately with the outlets from opposite ends ot the piston chamber by a piston reciprocable by a rod extending from the end of the piston chamber opposite to the discharge outlet.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide the piston with means in a mmping mechanism ot this character to co-operate with the discharge outlet when the piston is in its innermost position to close said outlet to prevent leakage and evaporation ot the contents ot the reservoir through the discharge outlet.

In carrying out the embodiment ot the invention shown in the drawing, there is provided a reservoir comprising a tubular body portion fl-ot rectangular shape in cross section and preferably of less width than height (Figure to which bodyends 5 and 6 are connected, one of said ends, shown' as the end G, having a filler opening closed by a cap or plug 7 having a vnormally Yclosed check valve opening into and closing outward from the reservoir.
A piston chamber is mounted in the reservoir adjacent the wall and which may constitute the top wall ot the reservoir, said chamber con'iprising a cylinder S connected at opposite ends to heads V9 and 10 and by means oi which heads the piston chamber is supported in the reservoir. The head t) has a part extending through an opening in the reservoir end with an outlet 11 to the exterior ot the reservoir, and which outlet is in communication with` opposite ends ot' the piston chamber. Said head ot the piston chamber is secured in place by soldering the projecting portion to, the reservoir end. The opposite head has a bore oit the same size as the bore of the cylinder and ahuts against the inner wall of the reservoir end G in line with an opening in the reservoir end oit the same size as the bore in the head. rlhis head is secured to the reservoir end (3 by a flanged nut 12 having` screw threaded connection with the head and clamped to the cylinder end 6 between the flange oi the nut and said head.
A piston 13 having suitable packing is reciprocable in the piston chamber by a rod 1.1L, to one end ot which the piston is secured, said rod extending through an opening in the nut 12 and packing 14 carried in a recess in said nut and which is in the nature of a stu'liing box to the exterior of the reservoir and has an operating handle 1er fixed thereto.
Each cylinder head 9, 10 has an inlet port 15, 16 to opposite ends of the piston chamber and to connect the piston chamber with the reservoir. Connected to the ports are tubes '17, 18 and the tubes connected by a coupling 19, which coupling is in the nature ot a valve cage having valve seats 21, and carrying valves, shown as ball valves 24,
said valves being adapted to open into and close outward from the piston chamber, whereby as the piston is moved in one direction the suction of the piston will unseat one ol the valves and close the other, and when moved in the opposite direction closing the valve which was previously opened and opening the valve which was closed to alternately connect opposite ends of the piston chamber with the reservoir.
To connect the outlet 1l to the piston chamber at opposite sides of the piston tol discharge the liquid from opposite ends ot the piston chamber, the cylinder head lO has a port 25 in a lateral extension 26 communicating with the piston chamber and the cylinder end 9 has a port 2'? in a lateral extension 28, said port communicating with a chamber 29 in the cylinder head 9 with which the outlet ll communicates and is in the nat-ure ot an outlet to said chamber, said chamber constituting a compression chamber. Said chamber also has an inlet port 30 to connect the chamber with the end oi the piston chamber opposite to the port 25. The er;- tensions extend in parallel directions toward the bottom ot the reservoir, and the port 25 in the one extension is connected to the port 27 in the other extension and thereby connects the end oli the piston chamber adjacent the operating handle with the compression chamber 29 by a pipe 3l extending parallel with the piston cylinder. To at all times connect the piston chamber with the liquid in the lowermost part ot' the reservoir in all positions oit the syringe, intakes are connected to the suction inlets l5, 16 01"' the piston chamber, said intakes comprising tubes pivotally or rotatably supported in line with the longitudinal anis of the reservoir and to swing or revolve ou an axis transverse to the longitudi .al axis ot the reservoir. These intalies comprise two members or tubes 35, 36 secured to tubular members 3T rotatably mounted in bushings Ll-l in 'l`couplings 38 connected to one end or' tubes 39, 4&0, which tubes are connected to the valve coupling 19 and the tubes 3, i0 through lateral ports 3T .in said nWnbers. lt will be noted that by this construction the tubes 3G wil1 lie adjacent opposite side walls ofthe reservoir, and being oi a. length to clear the top and bottom walls, and the tubes 39, 40 being oi such length that when the syringe is held in a vertical position the inlets to one or the other ot the tubes will lie and be contiguous to the ends ot the reservoir, according to which end ot the reservoir is uppermost. 'lhe tubes ot' a pair el intakes rotate together with the members 3?, and to provide a lluid-tight joint between the tubes and the u rings li \.'ashers Ll2 are interposed between the tubes and bushings.
To shut oil' communication between the tubes 35, 3G and the suction inlets to the piston chamber which are uppermost when the discharge end of the syringe is tilted upward from a horizontal position, and open communication between the lower tubes 35, 36 and the suction inlets, and vice versa, when the discharge end ot the syringe is tilted downward from the horizontal, valve mechanism is provided comprising a pair ot' valves a3, 44k, carried within the couplin.fr 3S adapted to co-operate with valve seats au, l-i connected to or termed at the ends of the tubes 39, l-O; said valves being in the form of balls connected by a rod 47 extending` through the tubes and Li() and l'ieing olf greater length than said tubes whereby when one valve is seated the other will be unseated.
To shut oft comnnmicaiion between the tubes 36 and suction inlets l5, 1G, and open communication between the tubes 35 and said suction inlets should the upper end of the reservoir be tilted to the lel't, as viewed in Figure 2, or the syringe be held in a position with such side at the bottom, or to connect the tubes 36 with the suction inlets in the piston chamber and shut olaf communication between the tubes and the suction inlets should the reservoir be tilted to the right or with the side of the reservoir viewed at the right of Figure 2 at the bottom, valve mechanism is provided comprising a pair ot valves i8 and 48 carried bg: each et the tubular members 37 to cooperate with valve seats connected to or 'formed at opposite ends ot csaid members, the valves being in the form of balls iised to the ends of rods 49 extending through the tubular members 3'? and being et greater length than said tubes whereby when one et the valves is seated the other will be unsi'eated.

To loch the piston in Aits innermost position with the valve() closing the outlet ll, the piston rod adjacent the operating handle has a projection 56 which is adapted to pass through a slot in a cap 57 having threaded connection with the nut 12, and co-operatc with said cap by giving the piston a slight turn to retain the piston rod and piston in such position. lt Will be understood that the piston .1. fad and piston may be readily released by rotating the piston rod 'to cause the proj ection 56 to register with the slot in the cap. As soon as the projection is in register with said slot the piston rod will be forced outward, due to the tension of the spring 54, against the tension otwhich spring the valve o() is forced to seat the valve on the outlet extension y55.
In the modification shown in Figure El the construction oit the syringe is substantially similar' to that shown in Figures l and 2 except that lthe intake tubes 35 and 36 instead olf being supported torevolve may have an oscillatory movement whereby When the syringe is in position with the pumping mechanism uppermost they will engage with the bottoni ot the reservoir and should the syringe be inverted they Will assume a position at opposite sides of the piston chamber, or may assume an intermediate position between the top and bottom of the reservoir. As the intalte tubes are of metal7 to prevent rattling ot said tubes striking against the wall ot the reservoir, they are provided with butlers 5S of telt or the like at adjacent the ends. l

l. In a syringe the combination oit a reservoir and a discharge outlet therefor at one end; a piston chamber connected at opposite ends with the reservoir and having outlets lroin opposite ends; a chamber at one end oi' the piston chamber with which the reservoir outlet and thel outlets oi the piston chamber are in con'ununicatiou3 a piston; a piston rod to reciprocate the piston extending from the piston chamber atthe end opposite to the other chamber; and a valve in the said other cnamlier operable dnrinsr the reciprocation ot the piston to alternately connectthe outlets ot the piston chamber with said othe chamber :tor the purpose speciied.
2. In a syringe the combination oftl a reservoir; a piston chamber therein having suction inlets to opposite ends thereoit; a piston to reciprocate in the piston. chamber; a casing at one end ot' the piston chamber having a chamber with an outlet to the exterior ot' the reservoir and a pair et inlet ports, one port coinnninicating with one end or the piston chamber' in axial alinement therewith and the other port connected to the opposite end otl the piston chamber; and a ball valve in said chamber operable duringl the reciprocation o' the piston to alternately shut ott and open up communication between said chamber and the piston chamber at opposite sides oit the piston, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

4. ina syringe the combination ot a reservoir; a piston chamber therein having a v:xasing at one end provided with a chamber having an outlet to the exterior ot the reservoir andY lengthwise ot the piston chamber; a port to said casing chamber in line with the discharge outlet communicating with one end ot the piston chandler; a second port to said chamber connected to the opposite end ot' the piston chamber; suction inlets to connect opposite ends of the piston chamlier with the reservoir; a piston; a rod to one end or which the piston connected and the opposite end extending Yfrom the end ot the piston chamber opposite to the discharge outlet; a valve in the casing chamber operable during the reciprocatu i ot the piston to alternately shut oit commnnication through the ports thereto with opposite ends et the piston chamber; and means carried at the side ot the piston oiliposite to the piston rod to pass throngh the port communicating with the one end olI the piston chamber and lco-operate with the discharge outlet to close the saine when the piston is in its innermost position, substantially as and tor the purpose specified.
' in a syringe the combination oi a :reser- CII Voir having a discharge outlet in one end; a piston chamber therein having suction inlets to connect 'the piston chamber at opposite ends with the reservoir; means to connect opposite ends of the piston chamber with the discharge outlet; a. piston; a piston rod to one end ot which the piston is connected and the opposite end extending from the piston chamber opposite to the discharge outlet and having an operating handle connected thereto; a valve connected to the side ot the piston opposite to the piston rod to close the discharge outlet when the piston is in its innermost position; and cooperating locking parts carried by the piston rod and cha-niber adapted to (zo-operate to loch' the piston in its innermost position1 subs vantially as and 'tor lthe purpose speciliech t. ln a syringe the combination of a re servoir; a piston chamber in the reservoir at one side of' the longitudinal axis of the reservoir; suction inlets to opposite ends'o'l said chamber; means to connect the suction inlets with the liquid in the lowermost part of the reservoir in all positions ot the syringe; a chamber at one end ot the piston chamber having an outlet to the exterior ol: the reservoir and co-axial with the piston chamber; a pair of ports to said chamber, one ot' said ports communicating with one end ot' the piston chamber and being coaxial with the discharge outlet and the piston chamber; means to connect the other port with the opposite end ott' the reservoir; a piston; a rod to one end ot' Which the piston is connected with the other end extending from the piston chamber opposite to the discharge outlet; a Valve in the chamber at the end of the piston chamber to c0- operate with seats ,in the chamber ports during the reciprocation of the piston to alternatelj,v connect said chamber with the piston chamber at opposite sides of the piston; and a Valve carried by the piston on the side opposite to the piston rod adapted to pass through the port communicating and coaxial with the piston chamber and closing the di charge outlet, substantially as and for the purpose specitied.
7. In a syringe the combination of a reservoir; a piston chamber located at the side of the reservoir having a suction inlet and an outlet to the interior ot the reservoir; a piston to reciprocate in said chamber; and an intake tube connected to the suction inlet supported to rotate on an anis transverse of the piston chamber and centrally ot' the reservoir and each end adapted to lie adjacent a side ot' the reservoir, substantially as and for the purpose speciiied.
8. ln a syringe the combination of a reservoir ot rectangular shape in cross section; a piston chamber located adjacent the top oi' tho reservoir haring a suction inlet and an outlet to the en erior of the reservoir; a
piston to reciprocate in said chamber; and an intake tube connected to the suction inlet supported to swing on an axis transversely and centrally of the reservoir with both ends oi. the tube lying adjacent opposite sides and adapted to assume a position adjacent the top and bottom of the reservoir and intermediate the top and bottom, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
9. In a syringe the combination oit a reserroir of rectangular shape in cross section; a piston chamber located in said reservoir having a suction inlet and an outlet to the exterior of the reservoir; a piston to reciprocate .in said chamber; an intake tube corr nected to the suction inlet supported to swing on an axis transversely and centrally ot the reservoir 1with both ends of the tube lying adjacent opposite sides and adapted to assume a position adjacent the top and bottom of the reservoir and intermediate the top and bottom; and means to shut oit comniunication between one end of the intake tube and the suction inlet with the other end oi' the intake tube in connection with the inlet, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

13. In a syringe the combination of a reservoir; a piston chamber therein having suction inlets to opposite ends thereof and arranged to connect the piston chamber with the liquid in the reservoir near the side and end which is lowermost in all positions oi' the syringe; a piston to reciprocate in the piston chamber; a casing` at the inner end et the piston chamber haring' a chamber with an outlet to the exterior of the reservoir and a pair ot inlet ports, one port communieating with one end of the piston chamber and the other port connected to the opposite end ot the piston chamber; and a Valve in said casina" chamber operable during; the reciprocation o-t the piston to alternately shut ott and open up communication between said chamber and the piston chamber at opposite sides ot the piston.
14. In a syringe the combination of a reservoir havinga discharge outlet; a piston chamber therein; a piston to reciprocate in the piston chamber; means to control the entrance of liquid to and its discharge from the piston chamber at opposite sides of the piston during' the reciprocation of the piston; means carried by the piston to engage with and close the discharge outlet when the piston is in its innermost position; and means to connect the opposite ends of the piston chamber with the liquid in the lowermost part of the reservoir in all positions of the syringe, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

In a syringe the ycombination of a reservoir having a discharge outlet; a piston chamber therein; a piston; a piston rod to one end ot' which the piston is connected and the opposite end extending from the piston chamber opposite to the discharge outlet; means to connect opposite ends of the piston chamber with the liquid-in the lowermost part oil the reservoir in all. positions of the hitter; means to control the entrance ot liquid to and its discharge trom the piston chamber at opposite sides ot the piston; and a i'alr-e carried on the side ot the piston opposite to the piston rod to engage with and close the discharge outlet when the piston is in its innermost posi-- tion, substantially as and it'or the purpose specilied.

In a syringe, the combination ot" a reservoir; a piston chamber in the reserif'oir; a piston to reciprocate therein; a easing` with a chamber interposed between the inner end ot' the piston chamber and the end of the reservoir having an outlet ope-ningto the exterior ot the reservoir and a pair of inlet ports one ot` said ports being in communication with the piston chamber at one end ot the piston and the other ot said ports in communication with the piston chamber at the other end of the piston; valve mechanism in said chamber operative to control the discharge ot liquid from the piston chamber into said casing chamber; suction inlet means to the piston chamber at opposite ends ot the piston arranged to assume variable positions near the side and oppositev ends oit' the reservoir; and means operablein said casing` chamber by the piston when in an inner position to seat the same against and shut ott the outlet from the casing chamber.
