Be it known thatI, PHILIP N. BRAUN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and Q State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Power Garment and Laundry Pressing Machine, of whichgthe following isa specification. f
This invention relates to garment and laundry power pressing machines, and has for its object particularly simple, eflicient p and durable means for automatically connecting and disconnectingr the movable pressing element 'of the machine .to the power actuated driving member or shaft.
The .invention consists in the novel features and in Athe combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing-this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding pai-ts in all the views.

means, one of said members being shiftable into and out of connection with the other and being normally out of connec tion therewith, means controlled by the part way closing movement ofthe movable press clement, and the motion transmitting means to shift the shiftable member into engagement with the 'other member, and means arranged to come into action afterthe press has been closed by thecoaction of the driving and driven members to shift the shiftable member out of connection with the other member, against the action of the lmeans tending to shift such shiftable niember, the machine usually being provided with automatic latching means which holds the press closed, which pressing means is tripped preferably by loperated tripping means as a trip lever. In the illustrated embodiment of my invention, the driven memberof the connector is shiftable into vand out of engage-- ment with the drivin member' and is lcar- 'ried by one of the motion transmitting parts which is movable adjacent the driving member during the part way closing movement of the resshead 1,
The riving member is here shown as a vcam 12 mounted on a-shaft 13 suitably su ported in the lower part of the frame, t e shaft being connected through suitable gear- .ing located in the casing 15 which gearing is connected through a shaft 16 to thearmature shaft of an electric motor 17. The motor is mounted on the frame bar 14 and the casing is suspended from the bracketi 18 depending from an upwardly diagonally' extending brace or bar 19.
The motion transmitting means is here shown as toggle links 2O and 21, the link 20 being pivoted at 22 tothe rear arm of the lever 8, the link 21 beingpivoted at 9 23 to the lower end of the rear leg 6, the toggle linksv being pivoted together at 24. The toggle link 21 has a 4forwardly extending art or lever 25. The link 20y is compose wisely relatively to each 'other against the Vresistance of a s ring 26.' Also, the usual coil spring 27 ac s to ull upwardly on the lever orpart 25. W'Een the links of the toggle move toward a stra' ht line upon depression of the lever 25 t e press closes of sections arranged to slide endv and upon unfolding of the toggle .lever the press opens, this action being well understood. `As the construction of the toggle forms no part of this invention, further description is thought to be unnecessary.-
During the opening and closing of the press, the lever 25 movesin a vertical plane -across the face of the cam 12.
The driven connector lmember is here shown as a lever 28 mounted to rock on the shaft 29 supported by the part or lever 25, the connector carrying a cam follower or roller 30 for engaging the periphery of the cam 12. When the press is open, that is, when the head 1 is up, the lever or part 25 is also elevated so that the cam follower' 30 is out of position or out of line in an axial direction of the cam, that is, it is opposite the end face of the cam. Now, upon part way closing movement of the head 1 by pulling down on. the handle 11, the lever or part 25 also moves vertically carrying the connector 28 and follower 30 downwardly therewith 4into such position that the follower may move laterally under the llow point of the cam into engagement with the periphery of the cam.
The means for automatically moving the connector to carry the follower into engagement with the cam at the end of such part way closing movement as here shown' comprises a laterally extending horizontal arm 31 provided with a suitable weight 32 heavy 'enough to move the connector on its pivot or shaft 29, this pivotal movement being limited by an annular flange 33 on the cam which the end of the roller abuts.
The cam 12 is constantly rotating and hence, when the cam follower 30 has been moved into engagement with the cam 12 at the end of such part way closing movenient of the press by the handle 11, the cam 12 which is rotating depresses the cam follower 3() and the lever 25 and hence brings down the press head with pressure on the garment or other work on the lower buck 2.
This machine is provided with latching means for holding the press closed, such means being here shown as a latch 34 pivoted at 35, to the inclined brace 19 and having its lower or latching end 36 movable into engagement with suitable means at the front end of the lever 25, the latch 34 being arranged to be swung by gravity into operative position, and being also provided with a light spring 37 tending to move it into latching position, this spring being interposed between an outwardly extending arm 38 at the upper end of the latch and the brace 19.
The means at the front end of vthe lever 25 engaged by the latch 34 is here shown as a rocking lever 39 pivoted at '40 to the front end of the lever part 25. The latch weaver engages theupper side of this lever above the pivot 40, these two parts being formed with rounding engaging surfaces.
The latch is tripped by a trip lever here shown as a pedal `41 pivoted at 42 to the frame and having an arm 44 arranged to engage an arm of the lever 39 to move the lever 39 upwardly on its pivot, and cause a shoulder or horn 45 on the upper side thereof to engage the latch and push it out of latching engagement.
This latching mechanism forms no part of my invention, but is the invention of 'Albert Clisson of the town of Geddes, and State of New York.
The means for throwing the driven member or connector 28 out of engagement with the cam after the latch 34 has engaged the part or lever 25, that is, after the press hasbeen closed, includes means arranged to come into action after the part 25 has been depressed to close the press head .1. As here shown, this means is a coiled spring 46 arranged in the path of the weighted f gages and the toe of the cam 12 has left its position, the spring 46 reacts and throws the weighted arm upwardly, and hence rocks the connector 28 outwardly carrying the roller or follower 30 into the position shown in Fig. 3. y
The bite or friction of the cam 12 on the roller 3() holds the roller engaged with the cam during the tensioning of the spring 46, and when the latch 34 engages the arm 25 and hence holds the press closed, there is a space between the periphery of the roller 30 and t-he low`point of the cam so that the spring 4G is free to act against the weighted arm 31 and is not restrained by the friction of the cam 12 on the cam roller 30. In other words, during the rotation of the cam there is a space between, the low point of the cam and the follower which permits the follower to move out of engagement with the cam.
The spring 46 is here shown as supported' on the laterally extending foot 47 of a bracket 48 depending from the frame member 14. v
In order to prevent engaging of the end face of the roller on the end face of the cam 12 when the presshead is open, and during the initial part of a part way vclosing movement, means is provided for holding the connector 28 in its out position when the press is open and the lever 25 is in its starting position. The means here illustrated comprises a weighted arm 50 loosely pivoted on the axis of theitoggle lever 21 and arranged in the path of a laterally extending arm 51 at the upper end of the connector so that when the lever 25 is in its upper or starting position, this weighted arm 5() lies onor vengages the arm 51 and prevents the connector 28 from being moved inwardly by its weighted arm 31 and during the initial part of the part way closing movement of the pressing head l, the lever 50 moves on its pivot and follows the arm 51 during the part way closing movement of the press,such following movement being limited by a stop arm 52 ,on the lever 50 engaging the stop surface at' 53 onvthe frame. 4-
In order to hold the connector out of engagement'with thecam while the latch 34 is in latched position, that is, while the press is closed, means is provided for holding the connector in its out position .or the position to which it is thrown by the impulse of the throw out spring 46, as this spring 46 only extends far enough to throw fao the connector out but -not 'far enough to hold it away from the end tace of the cam.
This means as here `shown comprises a lock lever 54 preferably pivoted to the connector 28, it being here shown as pivote'd between its ends at l55 thereto, the outer end of this lever 54 being heavier than the inner end so that the lever normally lies in the position shown in Fig. 2, the lever being arranged so that when it is moved into straight position one arm thereof is interposed between the operator 25 and the side face of the lever 28. Then in this position, the movement of the lever 54 is limited by a shoulder 54a on the connector 28.
The lever 54 is moved on its pivot-againstV the action of its weighted arm by a suitable connection here shown as 'a spring 56 connected atits upper end at 57 to the weighted arm 50 and its lower end to the outer or heavier arm of the lever 54. A cord or wire may be used instead of this spring butpreferably, in order to avoid the petty adjustments of a cord oir wire as. to the ength thereof, a spring is used, this spring coming under suiiicient tension to shift the lever 54 from its position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 3 when the part or lever 25 depressed to its Afull extent by the cam 12.
Operation.
When the press is open the connector 28 is in its out position, that is, inI its position occupied when the roller-30 is out from under the cam or'is opposite the end face of the cam, and it is held in this out position by the weight of the arm 50. When the press head 1 isfclos'ed by ulling downion the handle 1l the lever 5 also moves downwardly into the position shown in Fig. 2, and also the connector 28 moves downwardly therewith, as it is pivoted on the shaft 29' carried by the lever 25. During the initial part of the downward movement of the lever 25 and the connector 28, the weighted arm 50 follows the connector 28 or the arm 51 thereon and holds the connector 28 from being moved on its pivot 29 by the weighted arm ing action of the weighted arm 50, so that,
the connector is moved to the right o n its pivot to the position shown in Fig. 2, wherein the roller is under the low point of the cam, such rocking movement of the connector 28 being affected by its weighted arm 31. The cam 12, which is constantly rotat` ing, then depresses the roller 30, connector 28 and lever 25 into the position shown yin dotted lines, Fig. 3, thus bringing the weighted arm 31 of the connector 28 onto the compression spring 4G, andthereby com.- pressing such spring. During such depression of the arm 25 by the cam 12 the'latch 34, Fig. l, comes into action and'holds the lever 25 down and the press closed undelpressure. Upon the irst revolution of the cam 12 bringing thelow point of the -cam again opposite the roller 30, the spring r46 is vfree to remet upwardly on the weighted arm 31 of the connector 28, and throws or Hips the connector 28 on its pivot to the left into the position shown in Fig.' 3, it being understood that the spring 46 is held from reacting while the high point of the cam is engaged with the roller 30, by the friction between the cam and the roller and that tho low point of the cam is slightly separated' from the roller when the arm 25 is held by the latch 34 in its depressed position.
During the downward movement of the vlever 25 and connector 28, by the cam 12, the
such weighted arm'50 and at its other end to the lock lever 54, carried by suehconnector and movable downwardly therewith, Pivotal movement of the locking lever 54 by the spring is however prevented owing to the engagement of the locking lever with the lever25, as shown in Fig. 2. However, as soon as the connector 28 is iiipped outwardly by the spring 46 the spring 5G which has been previously tensioned, 'as explained, is free to react to move the locking lever 54 into its active position as shown-in Fig. 3, where it holds the connector 28 from pivotal movement to the right by the weighted arm 31.
Hence, the connector 28, isheld by the lock arm 54 from moving tothe right and again carrying the roller under the cam 12 while the press is closed and under pressure.
Upon tripping of the latch 34, Fig. 1, the lever is pulled upwardly by the spring 27 and the press opened principally by this spring 27 and counterweight 10.
As the lever 25 moves upwardlyit causes the connector 28 and the locking lever. 54 to move upwardly therewith, thereby releasing the tension in the spring 56 and as the lever 25 and the connector 28 approac es its uppermost, position the connector `28 again engages and lifts the weighted arm 50 and the weight, of this arm moves'the connector 28 farther to the right and overbalances theweight of the arm 31 which arm 31 would now move' the connector to the right.
Such slight additional movement of the lever 25 and the connector 28 releases the frictional engagement between the lock arm 54 and the lever 25, so that, the lock lever 54 is free toA move into 4its .position shown in Fig. 2, by its outer weighted end, and all parts are in their starting positions.
This machine is particularly advantageous in that the driving and driven elements,
that is, the cam and the cam follower are` thrown into and'out of connection with each other without any attention on the part of the operator except the pallino' down part way of the pressing head 1. T is part way down movement of the pressing head 1 is 'primarily a safety-first proposition in order that the operator may close the press far enough to prevent the insertiony of a hand between the pressing' element before the -power is apphed, so that thev cumbersome meStIlS a/IB 1111- -able into and out of connection with the other and being normally out of connection therewith and means controlled by the part way closing movement of the movable element for shifting the shiftable member into engagement with the other member while the driving member is in lmotion.
2. In a pressing machine, a pair of cooperating pressin elements, one being movable toward and rom the other, and manually movable part wa'y toward the other, a driving member, motion transmitting means connected tothe movable element, a driven member for coacting with the driving member, one of said members being shiftable into and out of connection with the other and being normally4 out of connection therewith, and means controlled by the part way closing movement of the movable element .for shifting the shiftable member into engagement with the other member, a latch arranged to hold the pressing element in pressing position, and means for shifting the shiftable member out of engagement with the other member'when the latch is in holding position, substantially `as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a pressing machine, a pair-of cooperating pressing elements one.movable toward and-'from the other and being manually movable part way toward the other,
a rotating driving member, motion transmitting means connected to the movable element, and a connector shiftable into and out of connection with the driving member and being normally out of connection therewith, and means controlled b way closing movement o the movable pressing element to shift the connector into engagement with the driving member, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

In a pressing machine, a pair of cooperating pressing elements one movable toward and from the other and being manually movable part way toward the other, a rotating drivlng member, motion transmitting means connected to the movable element, and a connector shiftable into and out of connection with the driving member and being normally out of connection therewith, and means controlled by the manual part-way closing movement of the'movable 115 pressing element to shift the connector into engagement with the drivin member, latching means arranged to ho d the movable pressing element in closed position, and means or shiftin the connector out of engagement with `t e drivin member when the latching means is in its lgiolding position, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. In a pressing machine, a pair of cooperat-in'g pressing elements, one' movable to'- ward and from-the other and manually movable part way toward the other, a rotatingdrivmg member, motion transmitting means connected to the movable element in- 13 the manual part 100 cluding the part movable with the'movable element during the part way closing movement thereof, and a connector carried by said partand shiftable by such part way movement into position to be shifted into engagement with the driving member, and.
means for automatically shifting the connector into operative engagement with the driving member at the end of the part Way movement, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
6. In a pressing machine, a pair of cooperatingpressing elements one movable to- Ward and from the other and manually movable part Way toward the other, a rotatingv driving member, motion transmitting means connected to the movable element including the art movable Withthe movable elements during the part Way closing movement thereof, and a connector carried by said part and shiftable by such part wa movement into position to be shifted into engagement with the driving member, and means for automatically shifting the connector into operative engagement With'the driving mem er at the end of the part Way movement," automatic latching means for holdingthe movable pressing element in pressing position, and means for shifting the connector out of engagement With the driving member when the latching means moves into operative position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7 In a pressing machine, a pair of cooperating pressing elements one movable toward and from the other, and manual movable part way toward the other, a driving member, motion transmitting means connected to the movable element comprising a part movable crosswise of the axis of the driving member, a shiftable connector carried by said part and shiftable into position to en- ,gage the-driving member during the movement of said part by the part Way closing movementv of pressing element, and means for automatically moving` such connector into engagement with the drivingmember, at the end of the part Way movement, substantially as and for the purpose described.
8. In a pressing machine, a pair of cooperating pressing elements one movable toward and from the other, and manual' movable'part way toward the other, a driving member, motion transmitting means connected to the movable element comprising a part movable crosswise of the axis of the driving member, a shiftable connector carried by said part and shiftable into position to engage the driving member during the movement of the lever by the .part way v closing movement of the pressing element,
lmeans for automatically moving such connector into engagement: with' the driving member, and means or automatically moving the connector out of engagement with the driving member when said part has been actuated bythe drivingmember, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
49. In a pressing machine, a pair of cooperating pressing elements one movable toward and. from the other, and manually movable part Way toward the other, a drivi ing member, motion transmitting means connected to the movable element comprising a part movable crosswise of the axis of the driving member, a shiftable connector.

10. In a pressing machine, a pair of pressing elements, one movable toward and from the other, and manually movable part Way toward the other, a driving member, motion' transmitting means connected to the movap ble element comprising a part movable adjacent thedriving member, a shiftable connector carried by said part and shiftable into position to engage the driving member during the movements of said member by the part way closing movement of the element, means fory automatically moving the connector into engagement with the driving member, at the end of the part way movement, and means arranged to cme into action after said part is actuated by the driving member to move the `connector out 'of engagement with the driving member, substantially as and for the purpose described.

In a pressing machine, a pair of cooperating pressing elements, one movable toward and from the other, a driving member, motion transmitting means connected to the movable element including a member. movable adjacent the driving member, a shiftable connector carried by said part and movable thereby during the part Way movement of the pressing element into position to be shifted to engage the driving member, means tending to move the connector into engagement with the driving member, and means for holding the connector from movement by the former means when said part is in its starting position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
