DRAFT AND BRACE MEANS FOR CONCRETE MIXERS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP A. KOEHRING,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of .Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft and Brace Means for Concrete Mixers, of which the following is a specification. f In the construction of concrete mixing machines it is quite common to employ a chassis or body frame for the machine, the 'same supporting a mixing drum and a small power plant such as a gasoline engine by whichthe mixing drum is revolved, and by which suitable loading instrumentalities are actuated. The loading means ofttimes consists of what is known as a loading skip or side loader pivoted to one side of the body frame of the machine and adapted to be raised and lowered in order to charge the mixing drum and receive a fresh batch of aggregates, respectively.
In certain types of mixers where a steering axle is provided at the front end of the machine, a fifth wheel connection is used so that there is a tendency of the body frame to tilt when the load of the aggregates in the loading skip is elevated.
The present invention contemplates the provision of means adapted to be quickly adjusted so as to brace the body frame of the machine at opposite sides, against such tilting action, when the machine is being used. i
The invention further contemplates that the provision against tilting, above referred to, shall beemployed as a draft means for pulling the machine when in transit from place to place, so that under these conditions the draft means performs a'dualfunction.
This application is a division of co-pending application Serial No. 7 04,454, filed April 5, 1924, and a full understanding of the invention hereof with its advantages and merits will be had upon reference to the following description and accompanying drawings inthe latter of which:
Figure 1 is a front'view of a concrete mixing machine embodying the construction forming the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged view, certain parts broken away, and certain parts shown in section, illustrating somewhat more clearly the bracing means intermediate one side of the body frame, and the draft bar used for pulling the machine from place to place.
- Describing the invention specifically in conjunction with the drawings, it is notable that the concrete mixing machine illustrated may be of any conventional type embodying the drum 1 mounted upon the body frame 2 and supported upon suitable axles. One of these axles, the front axle, is illustrated, belng shown at 3 and having the ground wheels 4; The front axle 3 is connected with the body frame or chassis 2 of the machine by means of a fifth wheel '5, a conventional king bolt connection not shown in detail. The fifth wheel means 5 includes the usual upper member attached to the'body frame 2, and the lower member 6 attached to the axle 3. In the present instance the connection between the member 6 and the axle-3 is a horizontal bolt or pivot 7 which admits of a certain amount of vertically rocking or oscilskip 8 of known construction. This skip is adapted to be elevated by suitable cable means 9 passing over grooved wheels 10 on the frame 11, of the machine. The cable means 9 are connected with a hoisting drum of any suitable type driven by the engine or power plant on the mixing machine body frame 2. Obviously when theskip 8 is hoisted with its load there exists a tendency to tilt the body of the machine including the frame 2 toward the side at which the skip is mounted.
To prevent liability of tilting of the machine in the manner above suggested, I provide a draw bar 12 for the machine, the same being a'somewhat V-s haped member pivoted at its opposite sides as shown at 13 to machine, which channel forms a part of the body frame of said machine. On the right side of the draw bar 12 there is provided a similar adjustable jack or stop member arranged, however, in a position reversed to that of the one just above described in order that it might engage with the upper side of the channel 18, disposed at the right side of the body frame or chassis as viewed from the front end of the machine according to Fig ure 1. By reason of the foregoing arrangement of the jack or stop members 15, it will be evident that the body frame 2 of the machine may be firmly braced or held against tilting when the loading skip 8 is raised and lowered, raised with its load of aggregates and lowered in empty condition after discharge of said aggregates into the mixing drum 1. The left hand stop 15 engaging beneath the left side of the body frame imposes a firm brace or abutment intermediate the draw bar 12 and the said chassis, tending to prevent downward movement of the chassis at that side. Similarly the stop or jack 15 at the right side of the chassis 2 creates a cooperating brace between the right side of the draw bar and said chassis. Under these conditions liability of tilting of the body frame 2 is wholly eliminated. F urther' more the parts 15 when arranged in cooperation with the body frame form a means of holding the draw bar up out of the way.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a portable machine of the class described, a body frame, a supporting axle therefor, a connection between the middle of the axle and the body frame, and bracing means intermediate the body frame and the axle comprising a bar pivoted to the axle and a stop earned by said bar and shiftable therewith into engagement with the body frame.
2. In a portable machine of the class described, a body frame, a supporting axle therefor, a connection between the middle of the axle and the body frame, and bracing means intermediate the body frame and the axle comprising a bar pivoted to the axle, said bar comprising spaced sides, and stops carried by said sides to engage with the body frame for preventing tilting of the body frame on the axle.
3. In-a portable machine of the class described, a body frame, a supporting axle therefor, a connection betweenthe middle of the axle and the body frame, anl bracing means intermediate the body frame and the axle comprising a bar pivoted to the axle, said bar comprising spaced sides, and stops carried by said sides to engage with the body frame for preventing tilting of the body frame on the axle, the said stops bee ing adjustable, and one arranged to engage beneath the body frame and the other on top of the body frame, and the stops being at opposite sides of the body frame.
4. In a portable machine of the class described, a body frame, a supporting axle therefor, a connection between the middle of the axle and the body frame, and bracing means intermediate the body frame and the axle comprising a bar pivoted to the axle and a stop carried by said bar and shiftable therewith into engagement with the body frame, said bar constituting draft means for pulling the machine.
5. In a portable machine of the class described, a body frame, a supporting axle therefor, a connection between the middle of the axle and the body frame, and bracing means intermediate the body frame and the axle comprising a bar pivoted to the axle, said bar comprising spaced sides, and sto s carried by said sides to engage with the body frame for preventing tilting of the body frame on the axle, the said stops being adjustable, and one arranged to engage beneath the body frame and the other on top of the body frame; and the stops being at opposite sides of the body frame, the said bar forming a draft device whereby to facilitate movement of the machine.
6. In a portable machine of the class described, a' body frame, a supporting axle therefor, a connection between the middle of the axle and the body frame, and bracing means intermediate the body frame and the axle comprising a bar pivoted to the axle, 109 said bar forming a draft means forthe machine, fand an adjustable member carried by said bar engageable with the body frame, whereby to hold the bar in a vertical position when not being used for draft purposes. 1O5
7. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a bod frame, supporting axle means therefor, a fth wheel connection between the middle of the axle and the body frame, .a draft bar movably mounted on the 110 axle and adjustable stops carried by said bar and shiftable therewith into engagement with the body frame to maintain said frame against tilting movement relative to the axles.
8. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a body frame, axle means therefor, including an axle, a connection between the axle and the body frame permitting tilting of the latter, a loading device supported by one side of the body frame, a bar connected with .the axle and means on said bar movable therewith and adapted to .combination, a body frame, axle means therefor, including an axlei a connection be tween the axle and the b0 y frame permitting tilting of the latter, a loading device supported by one side of the body frame, a bar connected with the axle and means on said bar movable therewith and adapted to be engaged with the opposite side" of the body frame to brace t e latter against a tilting movement when the weight of the loading device and its contents are imposed upon the body frame, said bar consisting of draft means and being composed of two sides, one side carrying the brace means scribed, a body frame, a supportin .axle therefor, a connection between the middle of the azgle and the bodyframe, and bracing means intermediate the body frame and the axle comprising a bar pivoted to the axle, said bar comprising spaced sides, and stops carried by said sides to engage with the body frame for preventing tilting of the body frame on the axle, the said stops being adjustable, and one arranged toengage beneath the body frame and the other on top of the body frame, the stops being at opposite sides of the body frame, and a loading device mounted on the body frame on one side thereof.
