Description
Dec. 1, 1925 D. w. THOMPSON GARAGE DOOR CATCH Filed Feb, 21, 1922 HT 705mm Y5.
Patented Dec. 1, 1925.
UNITED STATES DAVID W. THOMPSON, OF SAN GABRIEL, CALIFORNIA.
GARAG-EJJOOR CATCH.
Application filed February 21, 1922. Serial No. 538,224.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID 1V. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Gabriel, in the county of -Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Garage-Door Catch, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device which may be used to maintain the doors of a garage or other like structure in an open position while ingress into or egress from the structure is being made.
It is an object of my invention to provide such a device which will serve as a stop for 7 limiting the extent to which the'door may be opened and having a very simply formed and eflicient latch means for preventing the closing of the door until released by a downward pressure of the ,foot of the person desiring to close the door.
Further objects and advantages will be made evident hereinafter.
In the practice of my invention I provide a stake member, adapted to be driven into the ground or set in the concrete of the drive-way, having a counter weighted latch bar pi-vota'lly supported thereupon and means for limiting the movement of the latch bar, all as described in the following specification and defined in the claim.
Referring to the drawing which is for illustrative purposes only:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view illustrating the utility of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the door catch, showing the manner in which the door is engaged thereby and thus prevented from closing.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken upon a plane represented by the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direetionof the appended arrows.
As shown in the drawing, a stake 11, formed of wood or metal, is provided with an elongated longitudinal slot 12 and has the lower end thereof brought to a oint 13 so that the stake may be easily the ground. A catch bar 15 is extended through the upper portion of the slot 12 and is pivoted u on a bolt16 which extends through walls 1 confining the slot 12 and through one of several holes 18 extending through the catch bar 15 to allow for the adjustment. of the extension of the catch bar through the slot. A plurality of the riven into,
-The forward end of the catch bar 15 is which passes through the slot 12. A bumper 35, in the form of a rubber block, may be mounted upon the front face of the stake 11 by screws 36, or other desirable means, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing.
In Fig. 1 I show a pair of the door latches, as indicated by 40, situated in proper positions to serve as stops and re tainers for doors 41 of a garage 42; the right hand door being, shown held open bv one of thedevices 40. When one of the doors 41 is swung back from the closed posiiion. the lower ed e thereof rides over the incline 20, forcing the frontend. of the catch bar downward, 'and comes to rest against the bumper 35. After the door has passed the shoulder 22. the weight 25 causes the catch bar to again assume its normal position as indicated at 50 in Fig. 2. When it is desired to close the door 41. the catches may conveniently be released by forcing the front ends of the catch bars down with the feet. sufliciently to allow the lower edges of the doors to 'pass the'shoulders 22, whereupon the doors may be swung into closed position.-
It will be perceived that my device is of very simple construction and may, therefore, be very cheaply manufactured, thus constituting an article of considerable utility which may be supplied to the consumer at a reasonable cost. It is obvious that this" device has a distinct utility and performs a highly desirable service, as well as being of considerable convenience.
1 claim as my invention:
A. garage door catch comprising: a stake member adapted to be driven into the ground or set into the concrete of the driveway and having. an elongated slot therein;
a catch bar extending through said slot; a bolt passing through said stake and catch bar upon which the catch bar is pivoted; a hook formed on the upper edge of said catch bar in such a position as to enga e the lower edge of a door swung over said catch bar; adjustable means for limiting the upward movement of said hook; and
means for forcingsaid hook upwardly.
In "testimony whereof, I have hereunto set 10 my hand at Los Angeles, California, this 14th day of February, 1922.
DAVID W. THOMPSON.
