UNITED. STATES v PATENT oFncE;
EDWARD L. OORIBETT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED HOT AND COLD WATER FAUGET.
Application filed August v25, 1925. Serial No. 52,818.
To all whom it may concern:
- "Be it known that I, EDWARD L. CRBETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at 4 following is a specification. r
-a combined hot and. cold water faucet, and
My invention relates :to new and useful improvements in plumbing fixtures such as has for an object to provide an arrangement whereby thehandle of the faucet is kept in a sanitary condition due to the fact that when the handle is manipulated to turn on the water, the latter flows over the handle to thereby cleanse the same.
The fixture is one that may be used to advantage in hospitals, sanitariums and dispensaries wherein it is absolutely essential that the fingers and hand of the doctors and surgeons be absolutely clean. 7 It is the practice in most of the hospitals that the surgeon before an operation wash his hands from ten to twenty minutes, holding his hands under the running water from the faucet, and without thinkingafter he has finished washing his hands he will grasp the handle of the faucet to shut ofi the flow of the water.
If his hands or fingers were contaminated before the washing, in all probability hewhich there is a valve allowing for a mix ture of hot and cold water-,and at the same time to provide a handle which protrudes from the outlet pipe of the faucet so that' when the handle-is grasped to manipulate the faucet any germs that maybe deposited on the handle will be washed off by the flowing water, so that when the o erator in tu'rn'turns off the water, the ban e will With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain new and novel arrangements and combination of arts as willbe hereinafter most fullydescri ed and pointed out in the claims;
Referring now to the drawings showing the preferred embodiment of the invention,
Fig. l is a perspective of my improved fixture, mounted on a wash bowl or basin of conventional design.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the basin and through the improved faucet.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan .view of the faucet and Fig.- 4 is a fragmentary detail section branch pipe 4 will be connected to the main hot water supply pipe 9.
The faucet proper 5 comprises the body portion 10 preferably circular in outline with the two inlets 11 and 12 for thereception respectively of the pipes 3 and 1.
A cap 13 is threaded on the body portion and a packing 14 provided to prevent the water from leaking about the cap, or through an opening 15 through which extends the outlet p'pe 6 to discharge 'the water into the basin'l. j V
Mounted within the body 10 is the rota able valve plug 16 having the cold water port 17 and the opposite port 18 and likewise the right angular positioned port 19, which will be swung to registerwith either the inlet 11 or inlet 12 when just hot or just cold water is wanted.
.There is also provided the outlet port 20 which allows the 7 water to pass. up through the valve 16 into the outlet pipe 6.
Mounted centrally within this outlet pipe 6 and referably extending into the, valve 16, is t e aforementioned handle 7, which protrudes beyond the end of the outlet pipe 6, so that the same may be grasped by t e operator to turn the valve. i
This handle, of course, is less in diameter than the diameter of the outlet pipe 6 so that the water may pass through the pipe 6 and at the same time flow around the handle 7 the water thereby cleansing the handle 7 the moment the handle is oper ated to the right or left to turn on the Water s pp y- If the valve is in position as shown in Fig. 4 the hot and cold water will pass in from the several pipes. 3 and 4:, and the water will be of a medium temperature.- If simply cold water is wanted, the handle 7 will be forced to the right so that the small pointer 21 will be opposite the point marked Cold and this will allow theport 19 (Fig. 4) to register with the inlet 11 and cold water will pass out of the outlet pipe 6 way between the point marked Med um and Cold, the faucet will be turned off as none of the ports 17, 18 or 19 will register with the inlets Hand 12. If it is desired to turn on the hot water the handle '1 will be forced over to the left moving, of course, the outlet pipe 6' and the port 19 will now register with the hot water inlet and pipe 4. Y a
It 1s possible, therefore, to turn on either the hot or the cold water or both to modify the temperature by the arrangement I have shown. V
' From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided what I term a sanitary faucet wherein thehandle of the faucet is continuously subjected to a cleansing action by a flowing of the water the moment thatv the water is turned on, thus assuring that,
if any germs are deposited on the handle,
they will be washed off the same and the latter will then be clean when the operator goes to turn off the water. Many slight changes might be made without in any way departing from the-spirit or scope of the invention. i
Having thus described the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Y 1. A sanitary water fixture comprising a hot and cold water inlet, a valve for regulating the amount of hot and cold water passing through the same, an outlet pipe for the fixture and a handle extending directly in the flow of water from the outlet pipe to thereby constantly cleanse the same while the fixture is'turned on.
2. A sanitary faucet comprising a body portion having a valve therein, hot and cold during theefiow from the outlet "pipe.
over the endof the handle 7. Midwater inlets extending into the body'portion, means for regulating the flow of hot and cold water into the body' portion, by
the operationof said'valve, a revolvable outlet pipe mounted in the body portion and a handle protruding from the outer end of the outlet pipe, the handle therefore subjected to the cleansing action of the water 3. A sanitary faucet comprising a portion, a Valve provided with a plurality of ports within said body portion, hot and cold water inlets extending into the body body portion, an outlet pipe connected to the 'valve and arranged to rotate'with said valve,
a handle fitting within said outlet pipe and extending beyond the outer end of the same to revolve the outlet pipe and the valve to thereby regulate the supply of water and said handle subjected to the cleansing action of the water discharged.
4. A sanitary faucet comprising-a body portion with hot and cold water inlets, a valve rotatably' mounted in said body portion, and having three inlet ports and an outlet port, a discharge pipe connected with the outlet port of said valve, and said outlet pipe rotating with said valve toregulate the flow of Water into and out of the said faucet, a handle lower end of the scharge. pipe directly in the path of the water dischar ed to thereby con'tinuouslycleanse the hand valve is manipulated. Y ,c 7
5. ,A sanitary faucet comprising a body portionhaving inlets at its '01) osite sides and pipes extending therefrom adapted to be connected respectively tomain hot and coldwater. supply pipes, a rotatable valve witha in said body portion and provided with a ing from said discharge ort and said-discharge pipe rotating with said "valve to regulate the supply of water, and means positioned directly in the flow of the discharge pipe for, revolving the pipe and valve to regulate the discharge of the water and thesaid means being. cleansed by the action of the water.. i
